Answer key: check the clues
1. Maine Coon
Answer: B. The long, shaggy coat, substantial build, and ear tufts are useful Maine Coon clues. A Siamese is short-haired and color-pointed; a Sphynx is known for its hairless appearance.
2. Siamese
Answer: A. The color-point pattern is the key clue. Color-pointing describes a coat pattern, not a breed by itself; the Siamese is one breed associated with it. Persians can also have color-point varieties, but the quiz description’s short-haired cat points to Siamese.
3. Sphynx
Answer: B. Its hairless look and prominent ears distinguish it from the long-haired Ragdoll and the short-coated British Shorthair. Hairless does not mean care-free: skin and temperature needs are relevant considerations for prospective owners.

Answer: A. Its dense, plush coat and rounded appearance fit the description. The Oriental Shorthair has a noticeably more slender build and large ears; the Maine Coon has a longer coat and a larger, shaggy outline.
5. Bengal
Answer: B. Spotted or marbled markings are a signature visual clue for the Bengal. A coat pattern alone cannot establish pedigree, and similar markings can occur in cats without documented Bengal ancestry.

How to interpret your score
- 0–2 correct: You have a starting point. Focus on a few easy-to-spot clues, such as coat length, color-pointing, and distinctive patterns.
- 3–4 correct: You recognized several of the more visible breed traits. Compare body shape and coat texture to sharpen your eye.
- 5–6 correct: You know these common visual distinctions well. Remember that breed descriptions summarize tendencies, not rules that every individual cat follows.
What breed is my cat? A quiz cannot confirm pedigree
This quiz tests recognition of breed descriptions; it does not identify an individual cat’s registered breed. Many cats are mixed ancestry, and appearance alone cannot reliably establish pedigree. A coat color or pattern is not itself proof of a breed. If documented breed status matters, check the cat’s registration or pedigree records.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBreed registries provide descriptions and standards that can inform a quiz, but their categories and counts are not universal. The International Cat Association (TICA) lists 73 recognized breeds in its directory at the time accessed in 2026 and notes that new breeds are occasionally recognized. That is TICA’s count, not a count of every cat population or a figure shared by all registries. Browse TICA’s breed directory and CFA’s breed descriptions for more examples.
Best Value
Breed descriptions can include appearance and behavior, but individuals vary. The Cat Fanciers’ Association puts it plainly: “Not all cats look exactly the same, nor do they act the same.” Treat descriptions of activity, sociability, or vocality as general tendencies rather than guarantees about a particular cat.
Use breed information when choosing a cat
If you are considering a cat, breed information can help you ask useful questions, but it is only one part of the decision. Compare the kind of coat care a cat may need, its typical activity and sociability, and any special care considerations. Then consider the individual cat’s temperament, health, and circumstances. TICA’s Find a Cat guidance discusses breed characteristics, grooming, special needs, and adoption; it also recommends considering a local shelter if a pedigreed cat is outside your budget.
