Dr. Andrew Jones’s September 2, 2026 article is a personal defense of continuing to share at-home pet-care information. He says he wants to give pet parents practical options, particularly when they feel overwhelmed by the cost or accessibility of veterinary care. His argument is a statement of purpose, not independent evidence that any particular home remedy or treatment works.
What Jones says he is trying to do
Jones describes his work as helping owners make informed choices about everyday care, prevention, nutrition, and comfort. He argues that people should be able to learn what they can safely do at home and recognize when a pet needs professional attention. He writes, “I believe pet parents deserve information.”

He says he is not promising miracle cures: “I am not here to tell people that a supplement will cure every disease.” He also says, “I am not here to tell people to avoid veterinary care when their pet truly needs it.” That distinction matters: sharing information about home care does not establish that a remedy is effective, or that a particular symptom is safe to manage without an examination.

Jones says SkeptVet criticized his continued sharing of books, remedies, and products after he stopped practicing under a veterinary license. He characterizes the criticism as including accusations that his work promotes “quacks,” “snake oil,” or nonsense and lies. Those are Jones’s descriptions of the dispute; they should not be treated as verified quotations from SkeptVet.

He frames the disagreement as a conflict between conventional veterinary medicine and natural or home-care options, and argues that critics should also consider why owners seek alternatives. That is his framing, not proof that veterinary professionals generally oppose home care or disregard affordability.

Where at-home care should stop
Jones gives examples such as cleaning a minor wound, improving a pet’s diet, learning warning signs, and addressing routine comfort concerns. They are examples of the kinds of topics he discusses, not a determination that any given wound, symptom, diet change, or product is appropriate for a specific animal.
The FDA advises owners with urgent concerns to contact a veterinarian, an emergency animal hospital, or an animal poison control center. For suspected poisoning, a dangerous exposure, or a medication given incorrectly, do not wait to see whether a home remedy works. The FDA notes that some exposures can become serious quickly and that a veterinarian can take the animal’s medical history into account. FDA: Who Do You Call if You Have a Pet Emergency?

Prescription animal drugs require licensed-veterinarian involvement under federal guidance. The federal definition of a veterinarian-client-patient relationship requires the veterinarian to know the animal sufficiently and be available for follow-up; it cannot be established solely through telemedicine under that federal definition. State and local rules may add requirements. FDA: Veterinarian-Client-Patient Relationships, Prescribing/Dispensing Animal Drugs and Telemedicine
Why product claims matter
A product marketed to diagnose, cure, mitigate, treat, or prevent disease may be considered an animal drug. The FDA explains that unapproved animal drugs have not undergone the relevant review and may not meet standards for safety, effectiveness, manufacturing, or labeling. A natural label does not by itself establish that a product is safe or effective, and disease-treatment claims should not be mistaken for proof. FDA: Unapproved Animal Drugs

How to read the article fairly
Jones’s piece is best understood as an explanation of why he continues to publish at-home pet-care information despite criticism. It does not compare treatments or establish that a remedy will work for a particular condition. Its strongest practical boundary is also its clearest: home-care education can help owners ask better questions and handle limited routine tasks, but it is not a substitute for veterinary diagnosis, prescription care, surgery, or emergency treatment when those are needed.
Jones also says many owners find veterinary care expensive or difficult to access. That is his rationale; the article does not provide independent cost data or establish how common those barriers are.
