If you want less cat hair on furniture, these 12 breeds are among the better-known low-shedding choices: Cornish Rex, LaPerm, Russian Blue, Singapura, Burmese, Sphynx, American Wirehair, Devon Rex, Siamese, Javanese, Balinese, and Bengal. The list is qualitative, not a scientific ranking. No standardized study has measured and ordered their shed volume, and every cat loses hair and skin cells.

Shedding depends on the individual cat, coat type, season, age, environment, and health. A nearly hairless cat can still require substantial skin care, while a short-haired cat may leave little visible fur but still produce allergens. Use the comparisons below to match visible hair, seasonal changes, grooming work, and allergy uncertainty to your household.

What “least shedding” really means

Catster’s guide, updated September 17, 2026, presents these 12 breeds as relatively low-shedding options. Its order should not be read as first through twelfth place. The available breed references describe coats and grooming needs, but they do not provide controlled, breed-by-breed measurements of hair loss.

Low shedding is therefore relative. A breed may release less conspicuous fur because its coat is sparse, curly, short, or lacks an undercoat; that does not mean shedding stops. Seasonal coat changes can also be noticeable. Catster specifically notes heavier spring and fall shedding for Russian Blue, Devon Rex, Siamese, and Balinese cats.

Before choosing, compare four practical factors:

  • Visible loose fur: how much hair you are likely to see on clothing, floors, and furniture.
  • Seasonal change: whether shedding increases at particular times of year.
  • Coat or skin maintenance: brushing, bathing, ear care, nail care, and other routine work.
  • Allergy uncertainty: whether your household can tolerate the specific cat, regardless of breed.

At-a-glance comparison

Breed Coat and visible shedding Seasonal pattern Typical care noted by breed sources
Cornish Rex Short, dense down coat; little guard hair makes loose fur less conspicuous Not specified as a distinct season Usually less grooming; protect sparse areas from cold
LaPerm Short- or long-haired, wavy or curly coat Not specified Brush weekly or every two weeks
Russian Blue Dense, soft coat; minimal shedding much of the year Heavier spring and fall shed Occasional brushing outside seasonal peaks
Singapura Short, fine, silky coat; light year-round shedding Not specified Low grooming; check ears regularly
Burmese Short, silky coat; very little visible shedding Not specified Occasional soft brushing
Sphynx Near-hairless, so little loose fur is visible Not applicable to a conventional coat Regular skin, ear, eye, nail, dental, sun, and temperature care
American Wirehair Coarse, curled medium coat; described as less than an average cat Spring shed Weekly grooming during the seasonal shed
Devon Rex Short, wavy coat can make shedding less obvious Spring and fall changes noted Gentle, occasional combing
Siamese Short, fine coat; easy to clean up, but not necessarily less shedding Often heavier in spring and fall Low grooming; routine brushing as needed
Javanese Medium-length coat that rarely mats Not specified Brush to remove dead hair or restore shine
Balinese Medium-long, silky single coat without an undercoat More shedding in spring and fall Weekly grooming
Bengal Short coat; mature cats are described as light shedders Kittens may shed more Low grooming; dander remains an allergy concern

Breed-by-breed facts

Cornish Rex

The Cornish Rex has a short, dense down coat without the guard hairs or middle coat found in many cats. That structure usually means less grooming and less obvious loose hair. A sparse coat also provides less insulation, so protect the cat from cold rooms and outdoor chill. Unexpected bald patches or sudden coat loss are not normal “Rex shedding”; arrange a veterinary assessment instead.

LaPerm

LaPerms may have short or long hair, with a distinctive wavy or curly texture. Catster recommends brushing every week or two to remove dead hair and keep the coat manageable. Do not treat the curl as evidence that the cat produces fewer allergens: the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (ACAAI) states that all cats produce allergens.

Russian Blue

The Russian Blue’s dense, soft coat can shed very little through much of the year. Catster warns that spring and fall can bring a heavier shed, when more frequent brushing helps collect loose undercoat before it reaches the furniture. The Governing Council of the Cat Fancy (GCCF) also categorizes the breed as low grooming, but “low” does not mean maintenance-free.

Singapura

Singapuras have a short, fine, silky coat and are described as light year-round shedders. Their coat generally needs little work beyond occasional grooming. Catster specifically recommends checking the ears regularly, an easy routine that matters even when brushing demands are minimal.

Burmese

The Burmese has a short, silky coat and is commonly described as shedding very little throughout the year. Occasional brushing with a soft brush can lift loose hair and distribute skin oils. GCCF likewise lists the Burmese in a low-grooming category. Individual cats can still vary, especially during seasonal or health-related coat changes.

Sphynx

Sphynx cats have little or no conventional fur, so they leave less loose hair on surfaces. They are not, however, care-free or allergen-free. TICA recommends regular skin cleaning, bathing every few months to remove oil buildup, weekly nail trimming, eye cleaning, dental care, and gentle ear cleaning. TICA cautions that weekly bathing is not automatically required and that Sphynx cats need protection from strong sun and cold temperatures. The breed profile also discusses hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and the value of cardiac screening with a veterinary cardiologist.

American Wirehair

The American Wirehair’s medium coat is coarse and curled. Catster describes it as shedding less than an average cat, while emphasizing that this is a qualitative description rather than a guarantee for every individual. A spring shed may call for weekly grooming; outside that period, adjust frequency to what the cat’s coat and skin show.

Devon Rex

The Devon Rex has a short, wavy coat that can make shed hair harder to notice. TICA explicitly says Devon Rex cats shed like other cats, with substantial variation between individuals. Catster notes spring and fall shedding and suggests gentle, occasional combing. If allergies are a concern, spend time with the particular Devon before adoption; some allergy sufferers tolerate one individual better than another, while others react strongly.

Siamese

Siamese cats have a short, fine coat that is easy to pick up from surfaces. Catster cautions that a Siamese does not necessarily shed less than most cats; the short hair simply tends to be less conspicuous and easier to clean. Spring and fall can bring more shedding. GCCF describes the coat as low grooming, so a light routine brush can be used when loose hair becomes noticeable.

Javanese

Javanese cats have a medium-length coat that is relatively easy to maintain and rarely mats. Brushing is mainly useful for removing dead hair or restoring the coat’s shine rather than preventing all shedding. Check the individual cat’s coat density and tolerance, since grooming needs can differ even within the breed.

Balinese

The Balinese has a medium-long, silky single coat with no undercoat. That can reduce bulk and matting compared with a double-coated cat, but it does not eliminate loose hair. Catster notes increased shedding in spring and fall, and GCCF lists weekly grooming. Plan for regular combing, especially when seasonal shedding increases.

Bengal

Mature Bengals are described by Catster as light shedders, although kittens can shed more. Their short coat is listed by GCCF as low grooming. A Bengal still produces potentially allergenic dander, so never market or select it as a hypoallergenic solution. Meet the individual cat and test your own response before making a commitment.

Why low-shedding does not mean hypoallergenic

Cat allergy is not simply a reaction to visible fur. ACAAI explains that allergens are found on a cat’s fur and skin and in saliva, and that every cat produces them. Studies have not established a truly hypoallergenic cat breed, and hair length does not guarantee a lower allergen level.

“Of all the pollen, and mold, and animal dander, dust mites that we have studied, the cat dander is absolutely the smallest dander.”

— Dana Wallace, MD, quoted by the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology

If someone in your household has allergies, consult an allergist before adoption and, where feasible, spend time with the exact cat you are considering. PetMD gives the same practical advice, and TICA makes this recommendation specifically for people considering a Devon Rex. A reaction to one cat cannot reliably predict a reaction to every cat of that breed.

How to manage shedding in practice

  1. Match the tool to the coat. Use a soft cat grooming brush or gentle comb for breeds that benefit from brushing. A de-shedding comb can help during a documented seasonal shed, but it should not be used aggressively.
  2. Start with short sessions. A few calm minutes lets you find out whether the cat tolerates grooming. Stop if the cat shows distress, and try again later rather than forcing the session.
  3. Increase frequency only when needed. Weekly or every-other-week brushing suits some LaPerms; Russian Blue, American Wirehair, Devon Rex, Siamese, and Balinese cats may need more attention during spring or fall changes. Follow the individual coat rather than a rigid calendar.
  4. Keep the environment manageable. Wash bedding, vacuum upholstery, and use washable throws on favorite sleeping areas. These steps remove hair already released; they do not stop normal shedding or eliminate allergens.
  5. Use skin-focused care for Sphynx cats. Brushing is not the main task. Follow a veterinarian-approved routine for skin cleaning, bathing intervals, ears, eyes, nails, teeth, and protection from sun and cold.
  6. Watch for abnormal loss. Sudden bald spots, marked thinning, or other abrupt coat changes should be discussed with a veterinarian instead of being dismissed as breed-typical shedding.

Choosing among the 12 breeds

Start with the kind of maintenance you can reliably provide. If you want the least visible fur, a Sphynx may fit that narrow goal but requires the most specialized skin and hygiene routine. If you prefer a conventional coat with relatively light upkeep, Burmese, Singapura, Russian Blue, or Bengal descriptions may be more relevant. If you can accept seasonal brushing, Russian Blue, American Wirehair, Devon Rex, Siamese, and Balinese remain options.

Do not choose on shedding alone. Breed tendencies can inform expectations, but temperament, activity level, health history, and the actual cat’s behavior determine day-to-day compatibility. Meet the cat, ask how its coat has behaved in the current home, and make an allergy plan before bringing it home.
