If your cat may be choking, call an emergency veterinary clinic and start first aid while arranging transport. For a conscious cat with suspected foreign-object airway obstruction, the 2026 RECOVER veterinary guideline recommends up to five firm back blows first—not abdominal thrusts. If your cat becomes unconscious, begin chest compressions. Breathing distress can have causes other than choking, so treat these signs as an emergency rather than proof that an object is lodged.
Recognize possible choking and get help moving
Choking can resemble other serious breathing problems. RECOVER advises keeping a high suspicion of a foreign-body airway obstruction when warning signs appear, especially if the cat’s breathing efforts are silent or squeaky. Signs reported by veterinary and first-aid sources include:
- Gagging, retching, heaving, or coughing
- Raspy, noisy, silent, or squeaky breathing efforts
- Drooling or pawing at the mouth or face
- Stretching the neck to breathe or frantic distress
- Staggering, blue-tinged gums, lips, or tongue, or collapse
These signs are not proof of a foreign object. Call your veterinarian or a local emergency hospital so staff can prepare, and arrange to go there promptly. First aid does not replace veterinary care. A frightened or injured cat may bite, so protect yourself and avoid delaying transport while trying to perfect a maneuver.
What to do for a conscious cat
The current RECOVER recommendation is up to five firm back blows for a conscious cat suspected of choking. Deliver them over the caudodorsal thorax—the back of the chest—on one or both sides beside the spine, not directly over the spine. The guideline does not give a universally safe force or a size-specific formula for other maneuvers.

- Give up to five firm back blows. Aim beside the spine over the back of the chest.
- If they do not dislodge the obstruction, try an alternative technique. RECOVER lists positioning the cat with its head lower than its body, abdominal thrusts, or chest thrusts as options to consider.
- If the alternative fails, return to back blows. Repeat while the cat remains conscious and continue arranging urgent veterinary care.
Use caution: techniques can injure some animals. RECOVER specifically notes potential harm from abdominal thrusts in smaller or thin animals and in animals with enlarged abdominal organs. If you are uncertain what is safe for your cat, prioritize emergency veterinary help rather than forceful attempts.
Do not reach into the mouth of a conscious cat, push at an unseen object, or perform a blind finger sweep. RECOVER states: “The provider should not attempt to reach into the mouth of a conscious dog or cat.”

If your cat becomes unconscious
For an unconscious cat with suspected choking, RECOVER’s lay-rescuer algorithm begins with chest compressions. If possible, have someone else call the emergency clinic and prepare transport while you provide first aid.
- Give 30 chest compressions at a rate of 100–120 per minute.
- Check the airway briefly if the object has not come out. Pause for no more than 10 seconds. Remove an object only if you can see it; do not sweep blindly with a finger.
- Give two mouth-to-nose breaths in under five seconds if the cat remains unconscious.
- Repeat compressions, a brief visible-object check when indicated, and breaths while help arrives or transport is underway.
This sequence is emergency first aid for a lay rescuer without resuscitation equipment, not a substitute for veterinary instructions or care.

Why current guidance starts with back blows
Public instructions differ. The American Red Cross describes abdominal thrusts before back blows; an AVMA brochure from 2023 and a PetMD article updated in 2025 describe other sequences. Do not combine those methods into a hybrid routine. The 2026 RECOVER guideline is the newest veterinary clinical guideline identified here and recommends back blows first for a conscious cat, with chest compressions first after loss of consciousness.
RECOVER says evidence comparing techniques in dogs and cats is limited. It reports that in the only study directly comparing back blows with abdominal thrusts, back blows were approximately twice as likely to be effective. That is a result from one comparison, not a guaranteed outcome for an individual cat or proof that any maneuver is safest in every case. The disagreement among public instructions is another reason to contact an emergency veterinarian promptly.

Get your cat examined after the obstruction is relieved
Have a veterinarian assess your cat as soon as possible after bystander first aid, even if an object appears to come out and breathing seems better. The obstruction itself or the maneuver may cause complications or injury that are not immediately obvious. Keep going to the clinic and tell the staff what happened and what first aid you gave.

- Keep small household objects and toys with detachable pieces out of your cat’s reach.
- If your cat eats quickly, smaller, more frequent meals or a slow feeder may help slow eating. This is a prevention measure to consider, not a treatment for choking or a guarantee against it.
For optional preparedness, the American Red Cross offers a 35-minute Cat and Dog First Aid Online course that covers breathing and cardiac emergencies: Cat and Dog First Aid Online.
