Cat declawing is an amputation of the last bone in each treated toe—not simply nail removal. Because scratching is normal feline behavior, major veterinary associations oppose declawing as a routine response to scratching and recommend practical alternatives such as suitable scratchers, regular claw care, and changes to the cat’s environment.

What does declawing do to a cat?

Declawing, or onychectomy, removes the third phalanx—the terminal bone—of each toe that is operated on. The FelineVMA compares this to removing the last joint of a human finger; that is an analogy to convey the extent of the procedure, not a claim that human and feline anatomy are identical.

It is therefore different from trimming a claw or covering it with a temporary cap. AAHA says it strongly opposes elective declawing of domestic cats and believes veterinarians should guide owners toward effective alternative training programs. The FelineVMA and AAFP also oppose elective declawing as a solution to ordinary scratching. AAHA’s declawing position was last revised in June 2021; the AAFP position statement was published in 2017.

Why do cats scratch?

Scratching is normal behavior, not simply a bad habit. Cats scratch to condition their claws, stretch and exercise, and communicate through visible marks and scent. The behavior is both inherited and learned, so removing claws does not remove a cat’s desire to scratch.

What effects and risks are associated with declawing?

Veterinary sources describe possible immediate complications including pain, bleeding, swelling, infection, nerve trauma, and lameness. Retained bone material can contribute to claw regrowth; other reported concerns include behavior changes and chronic neuropathic pain. The FelineVMA and AAFP note that complication risks may increase with age. These are potential outcomes, not a prediction that every cat will experience them.

AAHA’s June 2021 position page summarizes retrospective studies as finding declawed cats “three to seven times more likely” to have chronic back pain, inappropriate urination, biting, and overgrooming than cats that were not declawed. This is a reported association from retrospective research, not proof that declawing caused each outcome or a guarantee about an individual cat.

Claims that destructive scratching means a cat is more likely to be abandoned, relinquished, or euthanized should not be treated as established fact: the AAFP statement says current peer-reviewed data do not definitively prove that link.

Alternatives to declawing for cat scratching furniture

There is no single alternative that suits every cat. Match the option to the cat’s scratching preferences, tolerance for handling, and the household problem. The goal is to protect people and furnishings while giving the cat an appropriate outlet for normal scratching.

Offer scratchers the cat will use

  • Try both vertical and horizontal scratchers, with different surfaces such as sisal, rough fabric, cardboard, wood, or a log.
  • Choose a stable post or pad that will not tip or slide, and make it tall or long enough for a full-body stretch.
  • Place a scratcher beside the furniture or other spot the cat already scratches, or near a sleeping area.
  • Reward the cat with a preferred treat when it uses the scratcher. If one style is ignored, try a different orientation or texture rather than assuming the cat will not use any scratcher.

These are practical selection guidelines, not a ranking of brands: the cited veterinary guidance does not establish that a particular commercial scratcher is more effective than others.

Trim claws regularly

Routine claw trimming can reduce household damage and injury. Use trimmers made for cats, which the FelineVMA brochure recommends to help prevent splintering. Choose a calm moment, use positive reinforcement, and ask a veterinarian to demonstrate the technique if you are unsure. There is no universal trimming schedule in that guidance; frequency depends on the cat’s lifestyle.

Consider temporary synthetic nail caps

Synthetic caps are glued over the claws to reduce damage while allowing the cat to make scratching motions. They are appropriate only if the cat tolerates paw handling. Cornell Feline Health Center guidance gives a replacement interval of six to twelve weeks; follow the specific product’s directions and ask a veterinarian if you are uncertain.

Protect furniture while redirecting scratching

Furniture protectors, coverings, or double-sided tape can discourage scratching at a particular spot. Pair a deterrent with a suitable scratcher nearby so the cat still has an appropriate place to scratch. A deterrent alone does not meet the cat’s need to scratch.

Support enrichment and reduce stress

Provide enrichment and meet the cat’s environmental needs. The FelineVMA lists synthetic feline facial pheromone sprays or diffusers as possible aids in some anxiety or stress contexts. Its brochure names Feliway as an example and discusses use at unwanted scratching locations; the brochure was sponsored by Ceva Animal Health. This is a source recommendation for some situations, not a guarantee or evidence that one product outperforms another. Ask a veterinarian about persistent, widespread, or newly changed scratching behavior.

When is claw or toe surgery medically different?

Removing a diseased or injured digit, claw, or phalanx to treat a medical condition—such as a tumor or chronic infection—is different from removing healthy digits for convenience. Whether surgery is medically necessary is a veterinary decision. When an operation is needed, AAHA and AAFP call for appropriate multimodal pain management around the procedure.

Declawing and a cat’s safety outdoors

Declawing does not stop the urge to scratch. It can also leave a cat less able to climb or defend itself outdoors, Cornell Feline Health Center warns. The AAFP advises keeping declawed cats indoors and supervising them outside for protection. Cornell’s guidance on this risk is available through its declawing information for cat owners.
