These clues are not a diagnosis. If your dog has started peeing indoors after being reliable, or its urination has changed, arrange a veterinary assessment before treating it as a training issue. If illness is ruled out and marking is likely, combine odor removal, supervision, trigger management, and reward-based housetraining. Don’t punish your dog.
How to tell marking from other indoor urination
Urine marking is generally a small deposit on a chosen object, often a vertical surface. A dog emptying a full bladder usually leaves more urine. But volume and posture are only clues: they cannot establish the cause on their own. VCA explains how marking behavior may look, while its guidance on house-soiling covers other patterns and possible causes.
- More consistent with marking: repeated small amounts on particular objects, possibly after new people, objects, or animal scents appear.
- Worth investigating as something other than marking: full-bladder accidents, frequent or unusually large amounts, urine leaking while the dog rests, painful urination, or accidents after a previously reliable period.
- Also possible: excitement- or fear-related urination around greetings. These episodes can involve little conscious control and are not necessarily marking.
Marking is not limited to intact males. Females and neutered dogs can mark, too. A dog can also have more than one contributing issue, so don’t treat a particular location or trigger as proof of the cause.
When to call a veterinarian
Book an assessment when indoor urination is new, changes suddenly, or comes with a change in frequency, volume, thirst, comfort, or continence. Straining to urinate needs especially prompt attention: VCA warns it can be an emergency, so don’t wait to see whether training changes help.

Possible medical contributors include urinary infection or inflammation, stones, conditions that increase drinking and urine production, incontinence, pain, neurological or cognitive changes, and medication effects. A veterinarian can assess which possibilities fit your dog. Housetraining gaps and fear or anxiety can also cause or contribute to accidents, but it is important not to assume a behavioral explanation before considering health.
For the appointment, note how often accidents happen, their approximate volume and timing, your dog’s posture, water intake, medications, and whether urine leaks during sleep or rest. These details help describe the pattern; they don’t replace an examination.

Why dogs mark or pee indoors
Social scent marking
Urine carries scent information. Hormonal development, other animals, unfamiliar people or objects, and territorial or social situations may prompt marking. Marking can occur in intact and sterilized dogs of either sex.
Changes, fear, or conflict
A change in household members or routine, separation-related distress, noise or another fear, and tension between animals may be relevant. A view of dogs outdoors or a new scent in the home can also be a trigger for some dogs. Look at what happens before an accident, but don’t assume that one event explains every episode.

Housetraining or health factors
A dog may not have fully learned where and when to eliminate, or may need a housetraining refresher after illness or a lapse in routine. Health problems, pain, medication effects, and age-related changes can also alter urination. Similar-looking accidents can have different causes, which is why sudden changes deserve veterinary attention.
How to stop indoor marking and accidents
- Address possible illness first. Arrange a veterinary assessment for a new or changed pattern; seek prompt care if your dog strains to urinate.
- Remove residual urine odor. Clean soiled areas with an enzymatic pet urine cleaner. UC Davis recommends enzymatic cleaning in its guidance on urine marking in dogs, as does Best Friends Animal Society. Cleaning helps with odor management; it does not diagnose or treat illness, anxiety, or the underlying behavior.
- Limit unsupervised opportunities. Keep your dog in sight when possible, block access to recurring targets, and use a safe, appropriately sized area when you can’t supervise. If an identifiable trigger is involved—such as seeing dogs through a window—reduce that exposure where practical.
- Make outdoor opportunities predictable. Take your dog out on a suitable schedule and stay with it until it eliminates. When housetraining is incomplete, restart with close supervision and reward outdoor elimination. Keep a simple record of accidents and progress so you can spot patterns.
- Respond without punishment. Don’t yell, startle, or punish your dog for an accident, especially after the fact. UC Davis and VCA caution against punishment; VCA notes that scolding or startling can trigger fear and may make marking worse. Calmly clean the area and adjust supervision or access instead.
- Get behavior support if the problem persists. Ask your veterinarian about referral to a veterinary behaviorist or another qualified behavior professional when marking continues or appears linked to anxiety or social conflict.
What cleanup and management tools can—and can’t—do
| Option | What it helps with | What it doesn’t do |
|---|---|---|
| Enzymatic pet urine cleaner | Addresses residual urine odor on soiled areas. | Does not treat a medical condition or resolve anxiety by itself. |
| Supervision, gates, or safe confinement | Limits access to targets and reduces chances to repeat the behavior while you work on the cause. | Does not identify or cure the underlying cause. |
| Belly band | Can temporarily protect belongings, according to VCA’s marking guidance. | Does not teach a dog to stop marking. Check and change it so it stays clean and dry; a wet band can cause skin problems. |
| Reward-based housetraining and behavior care | Addresses incomplete training and helps respond to behavioral causes. | Should not substitute for veterinary assessment when urination is new or has changed. |
Will neutering stop a dog from marking?
Neutering may reduce marking for some dogs, but it is not a guaranteed cure. Marking also occurs in neutered and spayed dogs, and environmental or behavioral factors may remain. Discuss whether surgery is appropriate for your dog with your veterinarian, and continue to address any triggers and housetraining needs.
