Cat Drooling: Common Causes and When to Get Veterinary Help

Cat drooling is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Learn possible causes, emergency warning signs, and how to prepare for a veterinary call.

Cat drooling can happen when a cat makes too much saliva or cannot swallow saliva normally. It is a symptom, not a diagnosis: causes range from fear or irritation to mouth disease, a swallowed object, medication or poison exposure, or difficulty swallowing. Seek emergency veterinary care if poisoning is possible or your cat is struggling to breathe or swallow.

What does drooling mean in cats?

Merck Veterinary Manual defines ptyalism as “drooling of saliva.” A cat may drool because the mouth is producing excess saliva, or because saliva is not being swallowed effectively. The second situation can look similar but has a different underlying mechanism. A veterinarian may distinguish these possibilities through the cat’s history and examination; the drooling alone cannot identify the cause.

Some cats may drool briefly when frightened or excited, but new, ongoing, or recurring drooling deserves attention, especially if your cat seems unwell or in pain. There is no universal safe waiting period for unexplained drooling.

What can cause a cat to drool?

Possible causes include problems in the mouth or tongue, exposure to certain drugs or poisons, and difficulty swallowing. Other possibilities described in veterinary guidance include motion sickness, esophageal irritation, tonsillitis, infectious or convulsive disorders, metabolic problems, and salivary-gland conditions. This is not an exhaustive list, and the same symptom can have different causes.

Mouth or tongue irritation and disease

Inflammation of the mouth or tongue, injuries, growths, foreign material, and other defects in the mouth’s lining may trigger drooling. Mouth or tongue problems can also cause bad breath, blood-tinged saliva, pain, pawing at the mouth, or reduced appetite. A string or other object can become caught under the tongue and may not be apparent without an examination. Do not pull on a string or force your cat’s mouth open; an embedded object or painful mouth needs veterinary assessment. Merck Veterinary Manual: Disorders of the Mouth in Cats

Drugs, poisons, and other exposures

Some medications and toxic substances can cause excessive salivation. If your cat may have encountered a poison, treat it as an emergency rather than waiting to see whether the drooling stops. The substance and amount can affect the risk, so share what you know with the veterinary team. Cornell Feline Health Center: Poisons

Problems swallowing

A cat that cannot swallow normally may drool even if it is not producing too much saliva. Throat or pharyngeal problems can interfere with swallowing and, in severe cases, threaten the airway. For example, Merck notes that pharyngeal paralysis can be fatal and may require emergency airway treatment. Merck Veterinary Manual: Disorders of the Pharynx in Cats

When is cat drooling an emergency?

  • Possible poisoning: Contact a veterinarian or emergency clinic promptly if you suspect your cat has eaten, licked, or otherwise encountered a toxic substance. Cornell warns that immediate treatment may be the only way to save a poisoned cat’s life.
  • Breathing or swallowing trouble: Get urgent veterinary help for drooling accompanied by difficulty breathing, choking, gagging, or severe difficulty swallowing.
  • Other serious signs: Drooling with signs such as an unsteady gait, heavy breathing, seizures, or vomiting can occur with poisoning and warrants emergency advice.

If you know what your cat may have encountered, keep the packaging or label and take it or a photo of it with you. Do not induce vomiting or give a home antidote unless a veterinarian specifically tells you to.

What should you do if your cat is drooling?

  1. Check for urgent signs without delaying care. If poisoning is possible, or your cat has breathing, choking, gagging, or severe swallowing trouble, contact an emergency veterinary clinic now.
  2. Note the details. Record when the drooling started, whether it has happened before, any recent medication or possible exposure, and other changes such as appetite loss, vomiting, mouth pain, or unusual behavior.
  3. Contact your veterinarian for guidance. If the drooling is new, persistent, painful, or accompanied by illness or other symptoms, ask a veterinarian how quickly your cat should be examined. The appropriate timing depends on the circumstances.
  4. Avoid home treatment for unexplained drooling. Do not force an oral examination, pull at a suspected embedded object, or give a remedy unless a veterinarian directs you. Treatment depends on the cause.

How will a veterinarian find the cause?

The veterinarian will use your cat’s history and an examination to narrow down the possibilities. Details about onset, recurrence, medications, potential exposures, appetite, vomiting, pain, and behavior can help. Because drooling can arise from excess saliva production or ineffective swallowing—and from several different conditions—there is no single general remedy that fits every cat.
