What should you use on a Persian cat’s coat?
A metal comb is the most useful starting point for checking a long coat from surface to undercoat. VCA says long-toothed metal combs or brushes—especially those with offset tines—can remove loose hair and smooth minor tangles in medium and long coats. Catster’s Persian-specific guidance favors a wide-toothed metal comb for comfort. A slicker can complement the comb by lifting loose hair, but it should not replace a thorough coat check.

Why daily checks matter—and where to look
VCA recommends daily brushing for cats with long, silky, or curly coats to help prevent tangles and mats. Catster’s Persian grooming guide also recommends daily combing. Mats often start where the coat rubs or is harder to inspect, so work beyond the visible topcoat.

Run a comb gently through small sections, checking that it can pass through the coat rather than merely smoothing the surface. The aim is to find resistance early, not to force a tool through it.

How to choose a tool for your cat
For routine checks and minor tangles
Choose a long- or wide-toothed metal comb that can reach into the coat. Catster describes this as a comfortable option for Persian grooming, while VCA identifies long-toothed metal tools as useful for loose hair and minor tangles. Work in small sections and ease away if the comb catches.
For loose hair
Try a slicker as a companion if your cat accepts it. Pins can catch knots, and a tool that feels comfortable on the back may bother a sensitive area. Use light strokes and stop at resistance; a slicker is not a way to break through a mat.

For surface smoothing
A bristle brush may smooth the outer coat, but Catster cautions that the Safari Bristle Cat Brush may not reach a dense undercoat. Pair surface brushing with a comb-through rather than assuming the topcoat is tangle-free.
For self-grooming enrichment

A gentle daily grooming routine
- Choose a calm moment. Let your cat settle before beginning; keep the session short if your cat becomes uncomfortable.
- Inspect friction-prone areas. Check behind the ears, under the front legs, the backs of the legs, and the rump before moving across the rest of the coat.
- Comb small sections. Use a long- or wide-toothed metal comb with light pressure. If it meets a minor tangle, try gently working around it rather than pulling.
- Add a slicker only if useful. Use gentle strokes for loose hair where your cat tolerates them. Do not brush repeatedly over a knot or irritated patch.
- Stop when grooming causes pain or distress. Do not force the tool through a mat. Seek professional guidance for severe or extensive tangles, and contact a veterinarian if the skin is irritated or has sores or other changes.
When a mat needs professional help
VCA says minor tangles may sometimes be combed or brushed out gently, but severe or extensive mats should be handled by a groomer or veterinarian. Cutting a mat with scissors can injure the skin; if hair needs to be removed, VCA advises using clippers rather than scissors. If a mat has irritated the skin, contact a veterinarian. How to make the final choice
Prioritize a comb that reaches through your Persian’s coat and can be used gently. Add a slicker only if it removes loose hair without pulling or upsetting your cat. A brush that is comfortable, manageable, and suited to your cat’s coat is more useful than an editorial “best” label; the available roundups do not prove that one model is objectively best for all Persians.
