Most healthy cats do not need their ears cleaned on a schedule. Check them regularly for changes, leave comfortable ears alone, and contact a veterinarian if you notice pain, persistent scratching, discharge, odor, or other signs of trouble. Cleaning is for cats whose veterinarian recommends it—not a way to diagnose or treat an ear problem at home.
Do I need to clean my cat’s ears?
Usually, no. If your cat is comfortable and the ears look clean, routine observation is the main home-care task. Unnecessary cleaning can irritate the ear canal. Some cats prone to wax buildup or ear infections may need occasional cleaning, but the appropriate solution and schedule depend on the individual cat. Ask your veterinarian what to use and how often. VCA’s ear-cleaning guidance also cautions against products containing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide when the canal may be irritated.

As part of ordinary handling, look at the outer ear and opening for swelling, redness, discharge, discoloration, dirt, or debris. Notice whether your cat is repeatedly scratching or shaking its head. These observations can flag a problem, but they cannot tell you whether the cause is mites, infection, or another condition. Cornell’s overview of feline ear disorders recommends consulting a veterinarian if scratching persists rather than probing the ear to find the cause.
How do I clean my cat’s ears safely?
Clean only when your veterinarian has advised it and the ear is appropriate to clean. Ask which solution is suitable and what interval to follow. Gather the recommended solution, cotton balls or gauze, and a few small treats. Do not use cotton-tipped applicators: they can injure the canal or eardrum or push debris farther inside.

- Hold your cat gently and lift the ear flap enough to see the opening. Keep the bottle tip outside the ear; do not insert it into the canal.
- Apply the amount of solution your veterinarian recommends, then massage the base of the ear for about 30 seconds.
- Let your cat shake its head, which helps loosen debris.
- Wipe away loosened material at the outer opening with cotton or gauze. Do not reach farther into the canal than your finger can reach.
- Reward your cat and follow the veterinarian’s instructions about whether and when to repeat the cleaning.
Stop if your cat seems painful during cleaning, and contact the veterinarian. Do not clean a red, inflamed, or painful ear before getting veterinary advice. This procedure is for ears a veterinarian has judged suitable for cleaning; it does not replace diagnosis or treatment. VCA’s step-by-step instructions describe this approach.
What does black discharge in a cat’s ear mean?
Black discharge is a reason to arrange an examination, not proof of ear mites. Mites can cause dark discharge, scratching, and head shaking, but similar signs can occur with an outer-ear infection or other conditions. VCA lists scratching, head shaking, pain, redness or inflammation, bad odor, and black, brown, or yellow discharge among possible signs of outer-ear infection. Appearance alone cannot establish the cause. See VCA’s information on ear mites in cats and dogs for the overlap in signs.

A veterinarian may ask about the symptoms, examine the ear with an otoscope, and inspect or test ear material. Identifying the cause and assessing the eardrum help determine the appropriate treatment. Do not try over-the-counter ear drops for an undiagnosed problem: some medications can cause hearing loss if the eardrum is ruptured. VCA’s guidance on feline outer-ear infections explains why diagnosis matters. As Cornell quotes William Miller Jr., VMD, professor of dermatology at Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine: “If you don’t identify the cause and deal with it appropriately, the infection may clear up temporarily but will come right back after treatment is stopped.” Cornell’s article on otitis discusses that risk.

When should I take my cat to the vet for an ear problem?
Arrange veterinary care for persistent scratching or head shaking, pain, redness, swelling, discharge, or a bad odor. Seek prompt advice if your cat develops a head tilt or changes in balance. These signs need assessment because untreated disease can extend from the outer ear toward the middle or inner ear, affecting balance and, in severe cases, causing permanent hearing loss.

Repeated scratching can also injure the ear flap and cause an aural hematoma—a painful swelling. Avoid probing the ear or starting drops while waiting for advice. Cornell’s otitis guidance and VCA’s overview of ear infections describe these complications.
