A cat’s pinna is the visible, mobile flap of the outer ear. Its cartilage, skin, and fur collect sound and funnel it into the ear canal; deeper structures are needed to transmit sound and support balance. Persistent scratching, swelling, crusts, sores, or a changed ear shape deserve veterinary attention because several different conditions can look alike.
What is the pinna?
The pinna, also called the auricle or ear flap, is the external part of a cat’s outer ear. It is a flap of cartilage covered with skin and fur. The outer ear consists of the pinna and the ear canal, which carries sound toward the eardrum. (MSD Veterinary Manual; Cornell Feline Health Center)

A cat can move its two pinnae independently, helping direct attention toward sounds from different directions. The pinna is only one part of hearing: the middle ear transmits vibration, and the inner ear includes the cochlea, involved in hearing, and structures involved in balance. (MSD Veterinary Manual)

What does a cat’s ear flap do?
The pinna gathers and concentrates sound, then channels it into the auditory canal. Its mobility helps a cat orient its ears toward sounds. Cornell notes that cats can hear sounds at “60,000 vibrations per second or greater,” compared with “up to about 20,000 vibrations per second” for humans. These figures are stated by Cornell’s Feline Health Center; the reviewed page does not provide supporting study details for that passage. (Cornell Feline Health Center)
Why is my cat’s ear swollen?
A swollen pinna can be an aural hematoma: blood collecting within the ear flap after small vessels break. Persistent scratching or head shaking—sometimes triggered by an itchy external-ear condition—can injure those vessels. A hematoma may make the pinna look balloon-like. Cornell notes that untreated hematomas can settle over weeks but may leave a permanently thickened or bumpy ear. (Cornell Feline Health Center)

Veterinary treatment may involve aspiration, which Cornell describes as usually temporary, or surgical drainage, a common approach intended to close the space where blood collects. The veterinarian selects an approach and addresses the cause of the scratching as well; draining swelling at home does not treat that cause. (Cornell Feline Health Center)

Scratching can signal an itchy or painful ear problem, but it does not identify the cause by itself. Persistent scratching may also lead to a hematoma. Cornell advises owners not to probe an ear to try to find the reason for ongoing scratching. Observe the ear without inserting tools and contact a veterinarian if the behavior persists. Can sun damage a cat’s ears?
Yes. White cats and cats with white pinnae are especially vulnerable to solar dermatitis when their ears are chronically exposed to sunlight. Early signs can include redness and scaling; disease may progress to crusting, discharge, ulceration, and, in some cases, squamous cell carcinoma. Merck advises limiting ultraviolet exposure in early disease, while suspicious or persistent lesions need veterinary assessment. (Merck Veterinary Manual)
A newly folded ear tip can also be acquired rather than genetic. Merck describes folded tips associated with prolonged glucocorticoid treatment or solar radiation damage, and notes that the change may not reverse. This acquired change should not be confused with breeds genetically predisposed to folded ear tips. (Merck Veterinary Manual)

What other conditions can affect the pinna?
Inflammatory, immune-mediated, and tumor-related conditions can affect the skin of the pinna. One rare example is proliferative and necrotizing otitis externa, an immune-mediated disorder involving the ear canal and the concave side of the pinna; it can cause crusted or ulcerated lesions and requires veterinary diagnosis. (Merck Veterinary Manual)
Because different disorders can produce similar-looking lesions, a photograph or a single symptom cannot reliably establish the cause. A veterinarian may consider the cat’s history, examine the ear, check for secondary infection, and recommend further testing as needed. (Merck Veterinary Manual)

How does a veterinarian assess an ear problem?
The examination commonly begins with an external inspection of the pinna, followed by otoscopy to look into the canal and assess the eardrum. If there is fluid or discharge, a sample may be examined under a microscope for mites, yeast, or bacteria. A suspicious mass may require biopsy; imaging or hearing tests may be appropriate for other suspected problems. If pain or difficulty makes examination unsafe or incomplete, sedation or anesthesia may be needed. (MSD Veterinary Manual)
When should I take my cat to the vet for an ear problem?
Contact a veterinarian for persistent scratching or head shaking, swelling, discharge, discoloration, crusting, ulcers, or a newly changed ear shape. These signs can have different causes, and prompt assessment is particularly important for an ulcerated or suspicious lesion. Do not put tools into the ear or try to diagnose the problem from the flap’s appearance alone.
