Cat Fecal Exams: What a Stool Test Can—and Can’t—Reveal

A cat fecal exam can screen for some intestinal parasites, but stool appearance and a negative flotation test cannot rule out every infection. Learn how to collect a sample and what to ask your veterinarian.

A cat fecal exam can detect evidence of some intestinal parasites, but it cannot diagnose every digestive problem—and a normal-looking stool or negative result does not rule out infection. Your veterinarian chooses the test and interprets the result in light of your cat’s signs, age, and exposure.

What does a fecal test show?

A common test is fecal flotation. The clinic mixes a stool sample with a special solution that helps parasite eggs rise to the surface. A technician or veterinarian examines material from the surface under a microscope. Depending on the test used, screening may include intestinal worms and some protozoa. VCA lists roundworms, hookworms, tapeworms, Giardia, and coccidia among parasites of interest in kittens.

“Fecal exam” does not mean one universal test. Different methods look for different evidence, and a flotation test does not check for every parasite or every gastrointestinal disease. Your veterinarian may select another test if the suspected organism is not reliably detected by flotation or if symptoms call for a broader investigation. VCA’s overview of fecal flotation explains the method and its limits.

Can my cat have worms if I don’t see any?

Yes. Most intestinal parasites cannot be seen with the naked eye. Visible worms or segments may sometimes be noticed, but their absence—and stool that looks normal—cannot rule out parasites or replace screening recommended by your veterinarian. Stool color or texture alone also cannot identify a particular parasite or disease. VCA’s fecal-testing FAQ notes that most intestinal parasites are not visible in stool.

Diarrhea, difficulty gaining weight, unexplained weight loss, raw-food exposure, or a history of recurring parasitic infection may lead a veterinarian to recommend testing. These are reasons to assess the cat, not proof that parasites are the cause. Tell the clinic what you have observed and when it began.

How fresh does my cat’s stool sample need to be?

Follow the clinic’s directions because handling needs can vary with the test. For flotation, VCA recommends about a one-inch piece of fresh stool, ideally no more than 24 hours old, with as little litter, grass, or gravel as possible. Use a clean, dry container with a tight-fitting lid; clinics may also provide one. Another VCA guide advises bringing a sample within six hours, or within 24 hours if refrigerated. Confirm whether your clinic wants the sample refrigerated and how soon it should arrive. VCA’s sample guidance provides additional handling advice.

  1. Ask the clinic which test is planned and whether it has specific collection or storage instructions.

  3. Note when you collected it and follow the clinic’s instructions for delivery or refrigeration.
  4. If several cats share your home, consider separating them for the day so you can identify which cat produced the sample, as VCA advises.

Can a fecal test be negative even if my cat has parasites?

Yes. A negative flotation result does not guarantee that infection is absent. Parasites may be missed if they are too immature to shed eggs, the infection is mild, egg shedding is sparse, or the parasite is not reliably detected by flotation. If suspicion remains, your veterinarian may recommend repeat testing or a different method.

Some parasites—including Cryptosporidium, Toxoplasma, Giardia, and Tritrichomonas—can be challenging to detect by flotation. Depending on the concern, follow-up may involve a wet mount, concentration or preservation techniques, Baermann testing, or laboratory testing that includes parasite DNA screening. These methods do not form a universal ranking; the appropriate choice depends on the suspected organism and clinical context. VCA’s guidance on testing cats with diarrhea describes why specialized testing may be considered.

What happens if the result is positive?

A positive result can help the veterinarian identify a parasite and decide what follow-up or treatment is appropriate. The result needs to be interpreted alongside your cat’s health and circumstances. Do not choose an over-the-counter dewormer or treatment based only on a description of a fecal test; ask the veterinarian what the finding means and what to do next.

When should cats have fecal testing?

Testing frequency is individualized. VCA says annual fecal flotation is usually sufficient for a healthy adult cat in its guidance, and another VCA article recommends at least one fecal test each year for healthy adult and senior pets. More frequent testing may be considered for kittens, cats not on year-round parasite prevention, cats with diarrhea or unexplained weight loss, raw-food exposure, recurring infection, or higher regional parasite prevalence. Your veterinarian can tailor timing to age, symptoms, exposure, and local risk. VCA’s flotation guidance discusses screening frequency and risk factors.
