Why the Same Toxin Can Affect Pets Differently

A toxin’s risk depends on the animal as well as the substance. See examples of species-specific hazards and how to respond to a suspected exposure.

A toxin that is dangerous to one animal may affect another differently—or pose little risk in a particular exposure. Species-specific physiology, body size, behavior, and exposure route all matter. That is why a substance or medicine considered safe for one pet should never be assumed safe for another.

Why species changes the risk

Animals differ in anatomy, physiology, metabolism, size, and behavior. Those differences can change how a substance affects the body and how much of it an animal encounters. As the ASPCA puts it, “These differences mean that what is safe for one species may be dangerous, or even fatal, for another.” The statement appears in its June 29, 2026 article, “Not All Pets Are the Same: Why Species Matters for Pet Toxins”.

Exposure matters as much as the substance. A pet may swallow something, absorb a topical product, groom residue from its coat, or inhale fumes. Body size and access also shape the amount encountered: a dropped human medicine can be a significant exposure for a small animal, while a curious dog or a cat that grooms itself may encounter substances in different ways.

Examples of species-specific hazards

Animal Example hazard and route Why it matters
Cats Lilies in the Lilium and Hemerocallis groups; ingestion or other contact The ASPCA warns these lilies are especially dangerous to cats and can cause kidney failure. It also lists acetaminophen, aspirin, garlic, and onion among substances that can affect cats.
Dogs Xylitol in some sugar-free gum, candy, and baked goods; ingestion The ASPCA says xylitol can cause low blood sugar and liver damage in dogs.
Birds Carbon monoxide or fumes from overheated PTFE-coated cookware; inhalation Airborne toxins are a particular concern for birds. The ASPCA also warns that avocado can be deadly to birds.
Rabbits Fipronil in some insecticides and parasite products; topical exposure The ASPCA warns that fipronil can be severely toxic to rabbits, including after accidental use of a topical medicine labeled for a dog or cat.
Reptiles and amphibians Fireflies; ingestion The ASPCA says lucibufagin in fireflies can harm the heart. Bearded dragons are described as especially prone because of indiscriminate eating habits.

These are examples, not a complete list or a ranking of danger. The result of any exposure depends on details such as the exact product or substance, the animal, the route, and the amount. A veterinarian or poison-control professional is best placed to assess an individual case.

Medicine and parasite products are not interchangeable

Do not transfer a medicine, dose, or parasite treatment from one species to another without veterinary direction. For example, the ASPCA warns that some breeds, including Collies and Australian Shepherds, may have genetic sensitivity to ivermectin. Use veterinary products only as directed and follow the product label; a product intended for one species may be harmful to another.

Rabbits illustrate the risk of assuming a topical treatment is harmless because it is used on other pets: some fipronil-containing products can cause severe toxicity in rabbits. Ask a veterinarian before using medication or topical products on or around a pet.

How to think through a possible exposure

There is no universal “pet-safe” rule. When assessing a potential hazard, identify four things: which animal was exposed, what substance or product was involved, how exposure occurred, and what may have happened afterward. This is a way to organize information for a professional—not a toxicity calculator or a substitute for veterinary advice.

  • Species: Give the animal’s species and, if relevant, breed. Some sensitivities may vary even within a species.
  • Route: Note whether the animal swallowed, inhaled, or had skin contact with the substance, including possible residue picked up while grooming.
  • Product: Keep the packaging or label available so a professional can identify the ingredients and intended species.
  • Exposure details: Share what you know about when and how much may have been involved. Do not delay calling to work out an exact amount.

Human medicines and supplements are worth securing: the ASPCA reports that they made up 16.9% of exposure items in calls it received during 2025. That figure is a share of reported call exposure items, not the percentage of pets poisoned or a population-wide rate. The ASPCA’s 2025 toxin report discusses those calls.

What to do if a pet may have been exposed

Contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service promptly if you suspect exposure or discover that a pet received a veterinary product not labeled for its species. Do not wait for symptoms, induce vomiting, or try a home remedy unless a veterinary professional specifically directs you to do so. Have the product label or packaging ready if available.
