To read a cat food label, check four things: whether the food is complete for your cat’s life stage, what ingredient order does and does not tell you, how moisture affects guaranteed-analysis numbers, and what health claims actually mean. This guide covers U.S. labeling; state requirements may also apply.
1. Check whether the food is complete for your cat’s life stage
Find the nutritional adequacy statement, usually printed with the feeding directions. It tells you whether the food is intended as a nutritionally complete sole diet or for intermittent or supplemental feeding. Treats, snacks, and supplements are typically not meant to be a cat’s only food.

When a label says “complete and balanced,” the claim must be substantiated either by meeting an AAFCO nutrient profile or by passing an AAFCO-procedure feeding trial. The statement also identifies the life stage the food is intended for. Match it to your cat: growth and reproduction have different nutrient needs from adult maintenance. FDA explains the statement and substantiation routes in its “Complete and Balanced” Pet Food guidance.

The statement is useful, but it is not a guarantee that every lot is free of a manufacturing or nutrient problem. FDA issued an advisory about certain lots of Quest Cat Food that had extremely low thiamine despite a nutritional adequacy statement on the label. That advisory concerns specific lots, not cat foods generally; if a product is in question, check the current FDA notice and lot details.

2. Read ingredient order as weight, not as a quality score
Ingredients appear by common or usual name in descending order of predominance by weight. The first item is the most predominant by weight when the food is formulated; that fact alone does not show whether the food is more digestible, has higher-quality protein, or meets your cat’s nutrient needs.
An ingredient list and guaranteed analysis do not establish digestibility, amino-acid pattern, or nutrient bioavailability. Use the list to understand what is included, not as a stand-alone verdict on nutritional quality. FDA describes ingredient-label rules and the limits of pet-food claims in Animal Food Labeling and Pet Food Claims.

3. Compare guaranteed analysis with moisture in mind
Guaranteed-analysis percentages are stated “as fed,” which includes the food’s moisture. That makes a direct comparison reasonable for products with similar moisture, but misleading when comparing, for example, a dry food with a canned food. A larger as-fed protein percentage does not necessarily mean more protein on a dry-matter basis.
Convert the values before comparing wet and dry foods
- Find the moisture guarantee. Use the percentage on each product’s label.
- Calculate dry matter. Dry matter (%) = 100 − moisture (%).
- Normalize the nutrient. Nutrient on a dry-matter basis (%) = (as-fed nutrient guarantee ÷ dry matter %) × 100.
- Compare the same nutrient. Apply the calculation to equivalent guarantees on both labels. The result helps normalize moisture differences; it is not a complete measure of food quality.
For illustration, FDA says canned pet food is typically 75–78% moisture and dry pet food typically 10–12%. Its hypothetical worked comparison uses canned foods at 78% moisture and a dry food at 12% moisture, yielding dry-matter protein values of 54.5%, 50%, and 42%, respectively. These are explanatory examples, not results from a population study. See FDA’s worked example and guidance.

4. Treat health claims as claims, not a treatment plan
Claims such as urinary-tract health, low magnesium, or hairball control describe what a product claims to do; they are not, by themselves, proof that it diagnoses, treats, cures, or prevents an illness. FDA reviews specific pet-food claims, and disease-treatment claims can raise animal-drug issues.
FDA’s June 1994 guidance on “reduces urinary pH” claims discusses supportive data and controlled-study considerations. It is technical guidance, not advice for treating a cat. For a cat with a health condition or special nutritional need, ask a veterinarian whether a particular food is appropriate. FDA’s materials on pet-food claims and its urinary-pH claims guidance explain the distinction.

What else to locate on the package
U.S. labels include product identification, net quantity, the manufacturer’s or distributor’s name and place of business, and an ingredient list. State rules may add requirements. Treat front-of-package language as a starting point: confirm intended use and nutritional adequacy in the statement and feeding directions. FDA outlines these elements in its Pet Food overview.

A practical way to compare two labels
- Match the stated life stage to your cat.
- Check whether each product is meant to be a sole diet or only for intermittent or supplemental feeding.
- Note whether the complete-and-balanced claim is substantiated by an AAFCO nutrient profile or a feeding trial, as stated on the label.
- Read ingredient order as weight order, not as a complete measure of quality.
- Account for moisture before comparing guaranteed-analysis percentages across wet and dry foods.
- Keep health claims in context; consult a veterinarian about individual medical or nutritional needs.
