If your puppy is struggling to breathe, collapses, is severely weak, cannot stand, may have swallowed something poisonous, repeatedly vomits, has blood in the stool, or is unusually lethargic or refusing food, contact a veterinarian or emergency hospital promptly. Young puppies can worsen quickly. Do not wait to see whether a home remedy helps.
For less severe signs, call your veterinarian for advice and follow their directions. Vomiting and diarrhea have many possible causes, and symptoms alone cannot establish a diagnosis. The steps below help you act safely while arranging veterinary care and supporting a puppy your vet has assessed.

1. Check breathing and responsiveness first
Look for labored breathing, collapse, unresponsiveness, or severe weakness. These are emergency signs: contact an emergency veterinary hospital and follow its instructions. If the puppy has difficulty standing or walking, seek emergency care rather than trying to manage the problem at home.
2. Call the veterinarian about warning signs
Tell the clinic what you are seeing and ask where and how quickly your puppy should be assessed. VCA urgent-care guidance lists more than two vomiting episodes in 24 hours, loss of appetite or lethargy, multiple soft or watery stools, and blood in stool as reasons to seek urgent care; it advises emergency care if a dog appears severely ill or has difficulty standing or walking. These are VCA’s general triage thresholds, not a substitute for advice tailored to your puppy.

VCA’s puppy-specific guidance says not to manage diarrhea at home if the puppy is lethargic, refusing food, vomiting, or has blood in the stool. Contact a veterinarian promptly when any of those signs are present.
3. Note when the symptoms started and how they changed
Write down when you first noticed a problem and whether it is getting better or worse. Record the puppy’s appetite, drinking, urination, stool, vomiting, coughing, sneezing, and behavior. This timeline can help the veterinary team assess what is happening.
4. Report possible poisoning or swallowed objects
If the puppy may have eaten medicine, a chemical, a plant, trash, or a foreign object, tell the clinic what it was and when exposure may have happened. Bring the packaging or other identifying information if available. Do not induce vomiting unless a veterinarian specifically directs you to do so.

For an emergency, keep your puppy quiet and limit movement while you arrange transport. Call the clinic on the way if feasible so staff can prepare. If an injury is involved, minimize movement and seek veterinary assistance.

6. Set up a quiet recovery space after assessment
Once your veterinarian has assessed the puppy and advised home care, provide a quiet, warm, dry place where you can observe them. If you use a heat source, position it so the puppy can move away from it; direct or trapped heat can cause burns or overheating.
7. Make water available if your vet has not restricted it
Keep fresh water accessible if your puppy can drink safely and the veterinarian has not told you to restrict it. Do not force water or fluids. Ask the veterinary team what to do if your puppy cannot keep water down or is not drinking.
8. Track food and water intake
Note how much your puppy eats and drinks, and when. Report refusal to eat or a noticeable change in intake to the veterinary team rather than trying to compensate by force-feeding.

Record how often your puppy urinates and passes stool, along with changes in appearance or consistency. If diarrhea is the concern, ask the clinic whether to bring a fresh stool sample. VCA recommends one for fecal testing when a puppy is otherwise lively, eating normally, not vomiting, and has no blood in the stool; testing can look for worms and other parasites.

10. Watch for new or worsening symptoms
Continue noting vomiting, diarrhea, breathing, coughing, sneezing, and behavior while your puppy is at home. Contact the veterinarian if signs worsen or new ones appear. If an emergency sign develops, do not wait for a scheduled recheck.
11. Ask what to do about diarrhea and diet
For a puppy that remains lively, eats normally, is not vomiting, and has no blood in the stool, VCA recommends contacting the veterinary team and asking about a fresh stool sample and diet. Contact the veterinarian if diarrhea lasts more than two days, or sooner if warning signs appear.
Ask before changing food or adding supplements. VCA says the traditional chicken-and-rice approach is no longer recommended in most cases and advises asking the care team about an appropriate veterinary diet.
12. Give only approved medication
Do not give human medicines or over-the-counter products unless your veterinarian specifies them for this puppy. If medication is prescribed, follow the exact dose and schedule. Ask before crushing a tablet or changing how a medicine is given.

13. Use feeding or fluid support only as directed
Do not syringe-feed or administer fluids unless the veterinarian has instructed you to do so for your puppy. Ask the clinic to explain the method and amount before attempting any at-home support.
14. Treat possible parvovirus as urgent
Canine parvovirus is highly contagious and can be life-threatening. Severe vomiting, loss of appetite, depression, or bloody diarrhea warrants immediate veterinary contact, but these symptoms do not prove that a puppy has parvovirus. Tell the clinic if you are concerned and ask how to limit exposure to other dogs while arranging an assessment. Discuss vaccination timing with your puppy’s veterinarian, since it depends on age and care history.
15. Follow the recheck plan
Follow the veterinary team’s instructions for medication, diet, monitoring, and follow-up. Call if your puppy worsens or does not improve as directed; seek urgent help if an emergency sign appears.

- Your puppy’s age and size.
- When symptoms began and how they have changed.
- What and how much the puppy has eaten or drunk.
- Changes in urination or stool, including the number of vomiting episodes.
- Behavior changes and any current medications.
- Vaccination and deworming history, if known.
- Possible exposure to trash, plants, chemicals, medicines, or foreign objects.
For diarrhea, ask whether a fresh stool sample would help. The clinic can advise how to collect and bring it.
Why symptoms alone are not enough
Vomiting and diarrhea can result from a range of problems, including dietary upset, parasites, obstruction, infection, or other illness. A veterinary history and examination—and sometimes testing—are needed to determine the cause. A home remedy or a change in food cannot rule out a serious problem.
Prepare a basic pet first-aid kit
A digital pet thermometer is one item included in veterinary first-aid supply guidance. A temperature reading does not diagnose the illness or replace veterinary care; the cited guidance does not provide puppy-specific instructions for using a thermometer.
