In females, the external reproductive opening is the vulva; the vagina, cervix, uterus, oviducts, and ovaries are reproductive structures. In males, the reproductive tract includes the testes and ducts that carry sperm toward the urethra. Appearance alone cannot diagnose a health problem. If your cat repeatedly strains to urinate and produces little or no urine, seek emergency veterinary care immediately.
What does normal cat genitalia look like?
This guide describes the main structures and their functions, not a visual checklist for identifying a cat’s sex or judging whether an individual cat is healthy. The available veterinary descriptions do not establish how external appearance varies with age or neuter status. A veterinarian can assess a specific concern.

Both sexes have a pair of gonads: ovaries in females or testes in males. The gonads produce eggs or sperm and hormones, as described by the MSD Veterinary Manual.
How female reproductive anatomy is arranged
The vulva is the external reproductive opening. Beyond it, the vagina extends inward to the cervix, which separates the vagina from the uterus. Oviducts connect the ovaries to the uterus. The vagina and vulva also form the final part of the birth canal.
#1 Best Overall
These structures have reproductive functions; they are not interchangeable with the urinary tract. In particular, the vagina is not the urethra.
How male reproductive anatomy is arranged
The male reproductive tract includes the testes, epididymides, ductus deferentes, urethra, and accessory sex glands such as the prostate. For normal sperm production, the testes must descend into the scrotum.
Rank #2
Sperm mature and are stored in the epididymis, then travel through the ductus deferens to the urethra during ejaculation. Accessory glands contribute fluid to semen. The urethra is part of the urinary route and also carries sperm during ejaculation; it is distinct from the female vagina.

Male and female anatomy at a glance
| Feature | Female | Male |
|---|---|---|
| External reproductive structure | Vulva, the external opening | Testes are the gonads; the reproductive tract also includes the urethra |
| Gonads | Ovaries, which produce eggs and hormones | Testes, which produce sperm and hormones |
| Internal reproductive tract | Vagina, cervix, uterus, and oviducts | Epididymides, ductus deferentes, urethra, and accessory sex glands such as the prostate |
| Reproductive function | The tract supports reproduction and forms the final part of the birth canal | Sperm mature and are stored in the epididymis, travel through the ductus deferens, and enter the urethra during ejaculation; accessory glands add fluid to semen |
| Relative urethral-obstruction risk | Lower than in males | Higher: the urethra is longer and narrower than in females |
This comparison explains anatomy and relative risk; it does not diagnose sex, reproductive status, or illness from appearance.
How to tell when genital-area signs may actually involve urination
Lower urinary tract disease can cause difficult or painful urination, frequent trips to urinate, vocalizing while urinating, blood in the urine, urinating outside the litter box, or frequent genital licking. These signs can have several causes, including inflammation, stones, infection, and behavioral factors. Symptoms alone do not identify the cause. The Cornell Feline Health Center describes these warning signs and advises immediate veterinary treatment for urethral obstruction.

Repeated attempts to urinate that produce little or no urine, straining, or painful vocalizing can signal a urethral obstruction. Treat this as an emergency: contact a veterinarian or emergency veterinary hospital immediately. Do not wait to see whether the cat improves or attempt home treatment.
Rank #4
Male cats face greater obstruction risk because their urethra is longer and narrower than a female cat’s. A plug or stone can contribute to a blockage, among other causes. The MSD Veterinary Manual’s clinical reference on urethral obstruction explains that a veterinarian evaluates suspected cases; assessment may include physical examination, radiography, blood work, and urinalysis. Treatment is veterinary emergency care and may require stabilization and relief of the blockage.
