Most cats give birth without help, but owners should know the warning signs and have a veterinarian’s number ready. Set up a quiet nest, observe without disturbing the mother, and contact a veterinarian promptly if she appears distressed, a kitten is stuck, or labor seems abnormal. A pause between kittens can happen, but it does not prove delivery is complete or that all is well.

How to prepare for your cat’s labor

Make a familiar, quiet nesting place where your cat can settle away from household traffic. Keep the regular veterinarian’s contact details and the number for an after-hours or emergency service close at hand. During labor, watch discreetly rather than repeatedly moving or handling the queen and kittens.

Pregnancy commonly lasts 64–66 days after breeding, according to the Merck Veterinary Manual. That range is not a precise due date: timing is difficult to predict when the breeding or conception date is uncertain.

How to tell labor may be near

Early labor can bring behavioral changes such as hiding, restlessness, nest building, or repeated visits to the nesting bed. Some cats pant, vomit, tremble, or eat less. These signs vary, and no single behavior confirms that birth is imminent. In the first stage, uterine contractions begin but usually are not visible as abdominal straining.

What happens during labor and delivery

Veterinary references describe three stages: early cervical relaxation and uterine contractions, delivery of the kittens, and passage of placentas. The queen commonly alternates kitten delivery and placenta passage. A kitten may arrive in a membrane; most queens open it, clear the kitten’s nose and mouth, sever the cord, and lick the kitten without assistance.

Time between kittens

Intervals vary. Merck says kittens are usually delivered less than one to two hours apart, but the interval can vary considerably. Some queens pause, rest, nurse, and later resume delivery; VCA describes interrupted labor lasting up to 24–36 hours. Those descriptions do not establish that a long pause is safe for an individual cat. Call your veterinarian if a pause seems prolonged, you are unsure whether more kittens remain, or the queen appears distressed.

When a kitten needs help

Most births need only quiet observation. If the queen does not attend a kitten, or the kitten is not breathing or seems weak, seek veterinary advice promptly. Cats Protection also advises contacting a veterinarian if you have had to intervene. Do not pull a kitten or give medication unless a veterinarian specifically directs you to do so.

  • Strong or prolonged contractions without a kitten being delivered.
  • A kitten visibly lodged or partly delivered.
  • Sudden weakness, marked distress, fever, or apparent pain in the mother.
  • Fresh bleeding that continues, foul-smelling discharge, or dark green discharge before the first kitten.
  • A prolonged resting period during labor, or concern that delivery has not finished.

Published time thresholds differ. VCA gives 20 minutes of intense labor without a kitten, or 10 minutes with a kitten visible at the vulva, as reasons for immediate help; other veterinary guidance uses different thresholds. Do not wait for a particular number of minutes if the mother or kitten seems in danger. Merck also identifies failure to deliver within 24 hours after a temperature drop below 100°F as a concern. Call and follow the veterinary team’s instructions rather than trying oxytocin, calcium, or another medicine yourself.

How to care for newborn kittens and the nest

Newborns need warmth, dryness, and access to nursing. If the queen is healthy and attentive, keep the kittens close to her and their littermates. VCA gives a nest-box temperature range of 85–90°F (29.4–32.2°C) for the first four days and says kittens must be able to move away from a heat source. Supplemental heat is not automatically needed; an unsuitable or poorly managed heat source can overheat or burn kittens. If the mother is ill, rejects a kitten, or cannot nurse, ask a veterinarian how to keep the kitten warm and what feeding support is appropriate.

How to monitor the mother and kittens after birth

Track kitten weight and nursing

Weigh each kitten once it is dry, then twice daily during the first week, as Merck advises. Merck says newborns should gain about 10% of body weight each day. Weight loss after the first 24 hours is a potential problem that warrants immediate attention, which may include assisted nursing, supplemental feeding, or a veterinary examination. A small digital scale can help you track weights, but it cannot identify why a kitten is not gaining.

Watch whether each kitten nurses and seems active. If a kitten is weak, does not nurse, or is losing weight or failing to gain, contact a veterinarian promptly rather than starting supplemental feeding without guidance.

Watch for illness in the queen

After birth, contact a veterinarian for continued straining, fever, depression or lethargy, poor appetite, painful or swollen mammary glands, abnormal or foul-smelling discharge, or excessive bleeding. These signs can accompany problems such as uterine inflammation, mastitis, retained placental tissue, or low calcium. Tremors, spasms, behavior changes, or seizures may signal a life-threatening calcium problem and need immediate veterinary care.
