Cats get hairballs by swallowing loose fur while grooming. Most of that fur passes through the digestive tract and leaves in the stool, but some can collect in the stomach and be vomited. Regular brushing is the simplest prevention step; repeated retching, frequent vomiting, or signs of illness call for veterinary advice.

How grooming turns loose fur into a hairball

A cat’s tongue has tiny backward-facing structures that catch loose hair during grooming and carry it down the throat. Hair is made largely of keratin, which the body cannot digest. Much of the swallowed fur moves through the intestines and passes in the stool; some can remain in the stomach, gather with fluid and food, and eventually be brought up. A vomited hairball may look elongated because it has passed through the esophagus. Cornell Feline Health Center

What makes hairballs more likely?

  • Long coats: Cats with longer hair may swallow more loose fur while grooming.
  • Shedding periods: More loose hair on the coat means more hair can be swallowed.
  • Age and grooming habits: Older cats that groom extensively may be more prone to hairballs.
  • Excessive grooming: It can be a sign of itchiness, allergies, skin disease, stress, or pain. Digestive disease can also contribute to excess hair ingestion or make hair harder to pass. VCA Animal Hospitals

If your cat is grooming much more than usual or developing bald spots, address the cause with a veterinarian rather than treating the hairball alone.

Prevention: what you can do at home

Brush or comb regularly

Brushing removes loose fur before your cat can swallow it. Cornell recommends making daily brushing and combing a habit. Choose a brush or comb your cat tolerates, and build up gradually if grooming is stressful.

Support hydration and routine care

Access to fresh water and regular veterinary check-ups are supportive parts of care, but they are not guarantees against hairballs. VCA’s hairball-remedy guidance

When recurring hairballs need a veterinarian

Hairball-specific diets, fiber supplements, gels, digestive lubricants, and medication may be considered for some cats. They are not universal fixes: recurring episodes can have an underlying skin or digestive cause, and the appropriate option depends on the cat. Ask a veterinarian before starting a product or changing food. Cornell cautions against giving laxatives or using commercial diets to prevent or relieve a suspected obstruction without veterinary approval and supervision. Published frequency guidance differs. Cornell says it is not uncommon for a cat to bring up a hairball once every week or two, while VCA advises contacting a veterinarian if hairballs are vomited more than once a month. These are clinical recommendations, not prevalence data or a universal cutoff. Discuss recurring episodes with your veterinarian, especially if the pattern changes. Signs that need prompt veterinary attention

  • Repeated unproductive retching or repeated hacking without bringing anything up.
  • True or frequent vomiting, rather than an occasional hairball.
  • Lethargy, refusal to eat, or other signs of illness.

A hairball can rarely block the digestive tract, and hacking may instead reflect a respiratory or gastrointestinal problem. Cornell advises prompt examination for lethargy, refusal to eat for more than a day or two, or repeated unproductive retching or true vomiting. Its separate vomiting guidance says vomiting more than once a week warrants evaluation. Do not wait for a frequency threshold if your cat seems unwell.
