Cat Hissing and Growling: What the Sounds Mean and How to Calm Them

Hissing and growling signal distress, not a diagnosis. Read your cat’s posture and context, give them space, and seek veterinary advice for new or persistent behavior.

Hissing and growling are warnings, not diagnoses: a cat may be frightened, defensive, territorial, in pain, or highly aroused. To respond safely, consider the sound together with posture, what happened just before it, and whether the behavior is new. Give the cat space first; do not punish, corner, or force contact.

What do hissing and growling mean?

Hissing commonly accompanies fear or defensive aggression. Growling can signal that a cat wants distance, but neither sound by itself tells you exactly why the cat is upset. Fear and aggression can overlap, so the situation and the cat’s body language matter. Cornell’s guide to feline aggression describes signs such as flattened ears, dilated pupils, and raised fur; these cues should be read as a pattern rather than as a standalone diagnosis.

There is no established veterinary set of exactly four “angry” sounds. Hissing and growling are recognizable warning vocalizations; a cat’s other vocalizing also needs context. Do not assume that any yowl or loud call proves anger. Some excessive vocalization, particularly in middle-aged or older cats, can have medical or age-related contributors.

Why might a cat hiss or growl?

The trigger, target, and timing help narrow down what is happening. Possible contributors include fear, conflict with another cat, play that has become too intense, sensitivity to being touched, redirected arousal, or pain. For example, a cat reacting to an unfamiliar stimulus or an outdoor cat visible through a window may need distance from that trigger—not soothing by touch.

A sudden behavior change, persistent vocalizing, or aggression when a particular area is touched deserves attention to possible illness or injury. Cornell lists conditions including hyperthyroidism, osteoarthritis, dental disease, and central nervous system problems among possible medical contributors to aggression. VCA’s guidance on cat vocalization also identifies pain, endocrine dysfunction, and hypertension as possible causes of excessive vocalization in some cats, and notes sensory or cognitive changes in older cats. A sound alone cannot identify any of these conditions.

How to calm an upset cat safely

  1. Stop closing in. Pause reaching, petting, or picking the cat up. Do not corner the cat; leave a clear route to move away.
  2. Lower the pressure. Reduce or block the apparent trigger if you can do so without approaching the cat—for example, limit the view of an outdoor cat or reduce a loud disturbance.
  3. Keep people and pets apart. If cats are fighting, never put your hands or another body part between them. Use a physical barrier to separate them, then allow time apart before any gradual reintroduction.
  4. Let the cat settle without forced contact. Avoid punishment and restraint. Physical punishment can increase fear or anxiety and make aggression worse. Do not treat fearful hissing, pain-related vocalization, or an aggressive encounter as a meowing habit to ignore.
  5. Ask a veterinarian about new or concerning behavior. Medical causes should be considered before treating aggression as a training problem. For behavior that is persistent, severe, or unsafe, ask your veterinarian about next steps, including referral to a veterinary behavior professional.

When a trigger cannot be avoided

Once immediate danger has passed, gradual desensitization may help when the trigger is known and exposure can be kept safe. Cornell describes starting at a distance where the cat can remain calm and pairing non-aggressive behavior with rewards. Do not push closer while the cat is escalating. Stop the exercise if the cat becomes distressed; persistent or unsafe reactions call for veterinary guidance rather than more exposure.

Making necessary travel less stressful

For a cat that becomes distressed around veterinary travel, VCA recommends making the carrier familiar at home instead of bringing it out only before a trip. Leave it accessible with comfortable bedding, food, or treats so the cat can investigate it at its own pace. If travel is necessary before the cat is acclimated, familiar bedding can help make the carrier less unfamiliar.

  • Secure the carrier in the vehicle so it cannot move.
  • Cover it with a blanket or towel to reduce visual stimulation, while ensuring ventilation.
  • VCA says synthetic feline pheromone spray may comfort some cats during a car ride. Its guidance suggests lightly spraying a blanket 15–30 minutes before travel; this is an optional aid, not a guaranteed way to stop hissing or treat aggression.

If your cat is severely distressed during travel, ask a veterinarian about behavior modification and other appropriate care. See VCA’s steps for reducing veterinary-visit stress.
