Short answer: Cat insurance can be worthwhile when a large, unexpected veterinary bill would strain your budget, but the best policy depends on your cat’s age, breed, location, deductible, reimbursement rate, annual limit, exclusions, and waiting periods. A 2024 North American industry benchmark put average U.S. accident-and-illness cat coverage at $386.47 per year ($32.21 per month). For 2026, a comparison from MoneyGeek highlighted Pumpkin, ASPCA, and Pets Best for different reasons, with reported average rates of $19, $18, and $23 per month. Those are publisher-specific estimates, not guaranteed quotes.
This guide explains how to compare policies and shows what the available evidence does—and does not—support. It does not pretend to rank ten insurers when only three recommendations are documented here. Before enrolling, read the current policy form for your state, confirm eligibility and waiting periods, and obtain a quote using your cat’s actual details.

What the latest market data says
Pet insurance adoption continues to grow. The North American Pet Health Insurance Association (NAPHIA) reported 7.6 million insured pets in North America at the end of 2025, up 8.5% from 7.03 million at the end of 2024. NAPHIA’s June 2026 industry update says its figures represent about 99% of written premium in the United States and Canada.
That total covers dogs and cats together and does not provide a 2025 cat-specific premium average. The most recent cat premium benchmark cited here comes from NAPHIA’s 2025 report announcement, published April 22, 2025, using 2024 data. NAPHIA says the report data was compiled, aggregated, and validated by Willis Towers Watson and estimates that it represents 99% of North American written pet-health-insurance premium.

The U.S. figure is a historical national average, not a 2026 quote for a particular cat. The Canadian figure is in Canadian dollars and should not be compared with the U.S. amount without accounting for currency and market differences.
How much does cat insurance cost in 2026?
Your premium is determined by the risk and coverage you select. Insurers commonly price for the cat’s age, breed, location, annual limit, deductible, reimbursement percentage, and optional benefits. Two cats in the same household can therefore receive very different quotes.
A documented 2026 illustration
MoneyGeek reported an average of $32 per month ($386 per year) for a seven-year-old Ragdoll using a $5,000 annual limit, a $500 deductible, and 80% reimbursement. The page explicitly says actual rates vary by breed, location, age, and coverage choices. Treat this as an illustration of one quote setup, not a market-wide promise.

Why your quote can be higher or lower
- Age: Older cats generally cost more to insure because illness risk rises with age.
- Breed: Breed-related risk and hereditary-condition exposure can affect pricing.
- Location: Veterinary prices and state-specific forms differ by location.
- Annual limit: A higher maximum payout usually raises the premium.
- Deductible: Choosing a larger deductible generally lowers the premium but increases what you pay before reimbursement.
- Reimbursement: A higher percentage reduces your share of an eligible bill and commonly increases the premium.
- Add-ons: Preventive-care or wellness benefits can add a separate charge and are not the same as illness insurance.
Three documented providers to put on your comparison list
The available 2026 comparison from MoneyGeek names three providers for distinct reasons. These are that publisher’s judgments, not an objective consensus or regulator ranking. Its reported averages are comparison estimates and can change as quote assumptions, forms, and prices change.
| Provider | MoneyGeek’s stated distinction | Reported average monthly rate |
|---|---|---|
| Pumpkin | Overall pick | $19 |
| ASPCA | Affordability pick | $18 |
| Pets Best | Direct-vet-payment pick | $23 |
MoneyGeek’s rates are not guaranteed prices for your cat. The comparison does not establish that any one provider is cheapest in every state, has the broadest contract, or will pay every claim. Use the distinctions as starting points, then verify the policy language and quote assumptions.

- TRUSTED BRAND: Vetericyn is a leader in at-home animal health products manufactured to help cat owners take the best care of their pets.
Pumpkin: MoneyGeek’s overall pick
MoneyGeek selected Pumpkin as its overall choice and reported an average of $19 per month. The designation reflects that comparison’s weighting of price and coverage, not a universal ranking. Ask for the annual limit, deductible, reimbursement percentage, exam-fee treatment, dental-illness terms, hereditary and chronic-condition language, and waiting periods in the policy offered where you live.
ASPCA: MoneyGeek’s affordability pick
MoneyGeek reported an average of $18 per month for ASPCA and labeled it the cheap-cat-insurance pick. A lower comparison average does not guarantee the lowest quote for your cat. Check whether the quoted price assumes a particular limit, deductible, reimbursement level, or optional benefit, and compare those settings with other quotes rather than comparing monthly prices alone.

MoneyGeek reported an average of $23 per month and highlighted a direct veterinarian payment feature. According to that comparison, using the feature requires a completed claim and a signed veterinarian release form. Confirm whether your veterinarian accepts the arrangement, which expenses remain your responsibility, and how quickly the insurer pays after receiving complete documentation. MoneyGeek also notes optional add-ons for some benefits; identify the extra cost and whether the benefit is insurance or a separate wellness program.
What to compare in every policy
Use the same questions and quote settings for each insurer. A comparison is meaningful only when the underlying assumptions match.
| Comparison point | What to verify in the current policy form | Why it changes your outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Covered events | Accident-only, illness-only, or accident-and-illness coverage | Determines which veterinary problems can trigger reimbursement |
| Exam fees | Whether the office or consultation fee is eligible when treatment is covered | An otherwise covered visit may still leave a separate exam charge |
| Treatments and therapies | Diagnostics, surgery, prescriptions, rehabilitation, and other listed therapies | Policies can differ in the services included or subject to conditions |
| Dental care | Whether dental illness is covered and under what conditions | Routine cleaning and treatment of dental disease may be handled differently |
| Hereditary or chronic conditions | Definitions, sublimits, and treatment rules | A condition may be eligible only when it is not preexisting and the contract permits treatment |
| Annual limit | Total the insurer can reimburse in a policy year | A low cap can be exhausted by one serious episode |
| Deductible basis | Annual, per-condition, or another method | Changes when and how often you pay before reimbursement begins |
| Reimbursement percentage | Percentage applied after the deductible and any excluded amounts | Sets your share of an eligible bill |
| Waiting periods | Separate accident and illness waits, plus any special waits | A new problem during a waiting period may not be eligible |
| Preexisting conditions | Definition, look-back period, and related-condition rules | Diagnoses or signs before enrollment can be excluded |
| Wellness benefits | Optional preventive-care allowance or separate non-insurance program | Routine-care reimbursement does not replace accident-and-illness coverage |
| Claims and payment | Required records, submission process, reimbursement timing, and direct-vet-payment rules | Determines cash-flow needs and administrative work after treatment |
Understand the major types of coverage
Accident-only
Accident-only coverage is designed for injuries resulting from accidents. It generally costs less than broader coverage, but it does not address illnesses. Read the contract’s accident definition and exclusions instead of assuming every injury is eligible.

Illness-only
Illness-only coverage addresses qualifying diseases and medical conditions but not accidental injuries. The NAIC’s 2026 market-conduct form treats illness-only as a distinct reporting category.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Accident-and-illness
This is the broad category used for the U.S. and Canadian cat premium benchmarks above. It combines accident and illness protection, subject to deductibles, reimbursement percentages, limits, exclusions, and waiting periods in the policy.
Wellness or preventive care
Wellness coverage is reported separately from accident-and-illness coverage in the NAIC’s 2026 form. It may reimburse a defined allowance for routine services, but it is not a substitute for insurance that pays toward unexpected disease or injury. Determine whether it is an optional add-on, a separate non-insurance program, or part of the policy package.
How deductibles, reimbursement, and limits work together
Suppose your cat has an eligible $2,000 bill and the policy has a $500 deductible with 80% reimbursement. If the deductible is annual and has not been met, you first pay the deductible amount. The remaining eligible amount is then considered for reimbursement at the policy’s stated percentage, subject to exclusions and the annual limit. Your final share can be higher if the bill includes excluded services, a noncovered exam fee, or costs above the annual cap.
That example is a way to understand the mechanics, not a promise that every policy applies the deductible in the same way. Ask whether the deductible is annual or per condition, whether reimbursement is calculated before or after the deductible, and how the insurer treats taxes, exam fees, and limits.

Waiting periods, exclusions, and eligibility checks
Waiting periods can differ for accidents, illnesses, and particular conditions. The NAIC’s 2026 reporting framework specifically asks insurers to report waiting periods, exclusions, benefit limits, deductibles, documentation, and claim outcomes. It is a regulator reporting framework, not a promise that every policy uses the same terms.
Before paying a premium, confirm:
- The minimum and maximum enrollment ages, if any.
- Whether your cat’s breed and location are eligible.
- The accident waiting period and the illness waiting period separately.
- How the contract defines a preexisting condition and related conditions.
- Whether a prior symptom, test, or diagnosis can affect future coverage.
- Any condition-specific, bilateral, hereditary, or congenital exclusions.
- Renewal rules, premium changes, and whether limits reset each policy year.
Marketing summaries can omit details that appear in the actual policy form, endorsements, or state-specific disclosures. Keep those documents with your quote so you can compare the same language later.
Claims and direct payment: plan for the cash flow
Many pet-insurance arrangements require you to pay the veterinarian and then submit a claim for reimbursement. If a policy offers direct payment to a veterinarian, confirm the process before treatment. MoneyGeek’s description of the Pets Best feature says a completed claim and signed veterinarian release form are required. That requirement means direct payment is not automatic at checkout and may depend on complete documentation.
For any insurer, ask:
- Which records must your veterinarian provide?
- Whether an itemized invoice and medical history are required.
- How the deductible and reimbursement percentage are applied.
- How the insurer handles a claim that includes both eligible and excluded services.
- Whether direct payment is available for every veterinarian or only participating practices.
- What happens if the claim is incomplete or a release form is missing.
Maintain an emergency fund even when insured. Reimbursement timing and your policy’s deductible can leave you responsible for a substantial amount at the appointment.

- Collect your cat’s details. Record age, breed or mix, sex, ZIP code, medical history, and current veterinarian. Use identical information for every quote.
- Choose a comparison design. Start with the same annual limit, deductible, and reimbursement percentage across providers. Run a second design if you are deciding between a lower premium and stronger protection.
- Request the policy documents. Download the sample or state-specific policy form, endorsements, exclusions, and waiting-period schedule—not just the marketing page.
- Check eligibility before comparing price. Confirm that the product is available in your state and that your cat meets enrollment rules.
- Map the coverage. Mark exam fees, diagnostics, dental illness, hereditary and chronic conditions, therapies, prescriptions, and any sublimits.
- Calculate a severe-bill scenario. Apply the deductible, reimbursement percentage, exclusions, and annual cap to a hypothetical high-cost treatment so you know your maximum likely out-of-pocket exposure.
- Review claims logistics. Note submission channels, required records, reimbursement timing information, and direct-vet-payment requirements.
- Recheck at purchase. Premiums, availability, forms, and optional benefits can change. Save the final quote and contract version.
How to evaluate the three documented picks for your situation
If your priority is a balanced starting point
Pumpkin is the starting point identified by MoneyGeek’s overall designation. Compare its quote against at least two alternatives using identical limits and cost sharing. The label alone does not establish that it offers the best value for your cat or state.

If your priority is the lowest possible monthly premium
ASPCA is the affordability pick in MoneyGeek’s comparison, with a reported $18 monthly average. Test whether the lower price comes from a lower annual limit, a higher deductible, a lower reimbursement percentage, or different covered services. A cheaper premium can expose you to a larger bill when care is needed.
If your priority is payment coordination with the veterinarian
Pets Best is the pick associated with direct veterinarian payment in MoneyGeek’s comparison. Confirm the completed-claim and signed-release requirements, and ask your veterinary practice whether it will participate. Compare the total cash you must carry before reimbursement, not just the monthly premium.
Why this is not a defensible “best ten” ranking yet
The title many shoppers see promises ten best providers, but the documented 2026 comparison available for this guide substantiates only three named recommendations. Filling seven additional slots with unsupported scores, prices, or coverage claims would create false precision. A responsible ten-provider list requires current policy forms, state availability, matched quotes, and claims terms for every additional insurer.
You can still use the process in this guide to build your own broader shortlist. For each additional provider, collect the same quote assumptions and policy documents, then score annual limit, deductible structure, reimbursement, covered services, exclusions, waiting periods, wellness treatment, and claims arrangements. Do not treat a consumer ranking as a substitute for the contract filed or offered in your jurisdiction.
Common mistakes that make comparisons misleading
- Comparing unmatched quotes: A $20 quote with a low limit is not directly comparable with a $30 quote offering a higher limit and reimbursement rate.
- Calling a benchmark a personal rate: The $386.47 U.S. average describes 2024 insured-cat data, not your 2026 price.
- Mixing currencies: The Canadian benchmark is $550.35 CAD, not U.S. dollars.
- Confusing wellness with insurance: Preventive-care allowances do not pay for every illness or accident.
- Ignoring exam fees: A treatment can be covered while the associated consultation charge is treated differently.
- Assuming direct payment is automatic: The described Pets Best process requires a completed claim and signed veterinarian release form.
- Relying on a marketing summary: Exclusions, waiting periods, definitions, and limits live in the policy documents.
- Waiting until after a diagnosis: Preexisting-condition rules can affect eligibility for related future care; read the definition before enrolling.
Decision framework: which policy design fits you?
Choose broader protection when a major bill would be difficult to fund
Favor accident-and-illness coverage, a larger annual limit, and a reimbursement percentage that keeps your share manageable. Price the plan against an emergency reserve, because you may still pay the deductible and excluded amounts up front.
Choose a lower premium only with a deliberate risk plan
A higher deductible, lower reimbursement rate, or lower annual limit can reduce the monthly bill. Make sure you can cover the larger portion of a claim and understand when the annual cap could be exhausted.
Choose wellness benefits only when the arithmetic works
Add preventive-care coverage only after comparing its additional cost with the allowance and services it actually covers. Keep the wellness decision separate from the need for accident-and-illness protection.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBottom line
Use the $386.47 U.S. 2024 benchmark as context, not a quote. In the documented 2026 comparison, MoneyGeek’s three starting points are Pumpkin for its overall pick, ASPCA for affordability, and Pets Best for direct-vet payment, with reported averages of $19, $18, and $23 per month. Your best choice is the policy whose current state-specific contract matches your cat’s risks, your cash-flow capacity, and the coverage details you verified—not the provider with the lowest headline price.
