Cat Joint Supplements in 2026: Two Documented Picks, Evidence, and Safe Buying Advice

Feline joint-supplement evidence is limited. Compare the two documented products, understand EPA/DHA guidance, and choose safely with your veterinarian.

There is no universally proven “best” joint supplement for cats. Feline evidence is limited, products are not regulated like medicines, and a supplement should support—not replace—a veterinarian-led plan for pain, arthritis, weight, and mobility. The most defensible 2026 choices are products with a cat-specific label, fully disclosed amounts, practical administration, and a clear fit with your cat’s diagnoses and medicines. This guide reports the two products documented in current source material and explains why a five-product ranking would overstate what is known.

What the evidence actually shows

Joint supplements are widely marketed for older or stiff cats, but marketing confidence is greater than the feline clinical evidence. Merck reports that a systematic review and meta-analysis found no evidence of beneficial pain-management effects from glucosamine/chondroitin supplements for osteoarthritis (OA) in dogs and cats. Merck also describes the evidence for DHA-rich diets in feline OA as unclear and the benefit of hyaluronic-acid products as questionable.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That does not prove every product is useless. It means a label claim should not be treated as proof that a supplement relieves pain or changes the course of OA. Ingredient identity, dose, product quality, and the cat’s underlying disease all matter.

The one controlled feline diet trial

Lascelles and colleagues studied 40 client-owned cats in a randomized, controlled, blinded trial lasting nine weeks. Cats receiving a therapeutic diet containing EPA/DHA, green-lipped mussel extract, and glucosamine/chondroitin showed an increase in objective activity, while activity fell in the control group. The activity measure changed significantly within both groups and differed significantly between them (P < .001).

#1 Best Overall
Nutramax Cosequin Joint Health Supplement for Cats, Soft Chews, 60ct | Supports Joint, Skin & Coat Health, Glucosamine & Chondroitin for Cats with Omega-3s, Soft Chews, All Ages & Sizes
  • Joint Health Supplement for Cats - Cosequin is the #1 veterinarian recommended retail joint health supplement brand▼.
  • Contains Glucosamine for Cats - Cosequin contains glucosamine hydrochloride (FCHG49) and sodium chondroitin sulfate (TRH122). This unique combination of ingredients supports healthy joints.
  • Tasty Chews for Daily Use - Cosequin comes in a tasty soft chew, making daily administration easy and convenient.
  • With Omega-3s - Each soft chew contains omega-3 fatty acids, which help support your cat’s skin and coat health.
  • Exceptional Quality - Cosequin is backed by science, undergoing thorough quality inspections to ensure your cat receives a safe, high-quality product. It is manufactured in the United States with globally sourced ingredients.

This is a useful signal, not a product-specific proof. The diet combined several ingredients, so the study cannot show which component mattered, whether the same result would occur with an over-the-counter chew or capsule, or whether the change represented meaningful pain relief for an individual cat.

What the 2024 feline guideline says about omega-3

The 2024 ISFM/AAFP guideline cites only three qualifying studies in its review of omega-3 diets and supplements in cats. It suggests a combined EPA and DHA intake of 60–70 mg per kilogram of body weight, beginning at one-quarter to one-half of that target to reduce gastrointestinal upset. This is guideline context, not a personalized prescription. A veterinarian must account for the cat’s weight, food, existing EPA/DHA intake, health conditions, and medicines before selecting a product or amount.

Why this is not a defensible five-product ranking

The title “5 Best Joint Supplements for Cats” implies that five current products have been compared on formula, dose, safety, quality, and clinical evidence. The available documentation names one PetMD panel pick and provides label details for one UK retailer product; it does not independently verify a complete five-product lineup, current stock, or hands-on testing. Filling the remaining places with guessed products or unverified formulas would give you false precision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Accordingly, the comparison below reports what is actually documented. Treat the PetMD selection as an editorial recommendation, not a clinical finding, and treat the PDSA information as a market-specific label report, not independent validation.

Documented product What is established What is not established Important limits
VetriScience Healthy Hip & Joint Soft Chews PetMD’s veterinary panel selected it as its overall cat joint-supplement pick. PetMD says its panel considered ingredient quality and combinations, research, brand reputation, NASC seal, and ease of administration. The cited product information does not establish a current ingredient-by-ingredient label, EPA/DHA amount, clinical trial of this product in cats, or comparative superiority over other products. The panel is employed by PetMD’s publisher, Chewy. This is an editorial pick, not proof of efficacy.
PDSA Vet Care Joint Care Supplement for Cats PDSA Pet Store reports one capsule contains 150 mg glucosamine HCl, 100 mg green-lipped mussel (containing natural chondroitin), 0.75 mg hyaluronic acid, 1.5 mg manganese, 1 mg vitamin E, and 0.4 mg natural antioxidant. No independent clinical validation or evidence that this exact capsule reduces OA pain is established. PDSA is a UK retailer. Availability and labeling should not be generalized to other countries. The page says it is unsuitable for pregnant or lactating queens and that results vary.

For either product, check the current package in your country before buying. Formulas, serving directions, exclusions, and availability can change.

How to compare a cat joint supplement responsibly

1. Confirm that the formula is intended for cats

Look for a feline species statement, intended life stage, serving directions for cats, and explicit exclusions. A product made for people or dogs may contain different concentrations, flavorings, sweeteners, herbs, or inactive ingredients. Never calculate a cat’s dose from a human label.

2. Demand amounts, not just ingredient names

“Contains glucosamine” is not enough. The label should state the amount per chew, capsule, scoop, or measured liquid serving. For an omega-3 product, look specifically for EPA and DHA amounts; “fish oil” alone does not tell you how much of either fatty acid is present. Also check whether the amount is per piece or per daily serving.

Nutramax Cosequin Joint Supplement for Cats, Easy Sprinkle Capsule, 80ct | Glucosamine + Chondroitin for Capsules for Cats, Supports Healthy Joints, Sprinkle on Food, All Ages & Sizes
  • Joint Health Supplement for Cats: Cosequin is the #1 veterinarian recommended retail joint health supplement brand
  • Contains Glucosamine for Cats: Cosequin contains glucosamine hydrochloride (FCHG49) and sodium chondroitin sulfate (TRH122). This unique combination of ingredients supports healthy joints
  • Easy-to-Administer: Incorporating Cosequin into your cat's daily routine is simple - just open the capsule and sprinkle the powder on their food at mealtime
  • Exceptional Quality: Cosequin is backed by science, undergoing thorough quality inspections to ensure your cat receives a safe, high-quality product. It is manufactured in the United States with globally sourced ingredients
  • From the #1 Veterinarian Recommended Supplement Company: Nutramax has been a leader in pet health for over 25 years, and provides supplements to support joint health, digestive health, skin and coat health, calming, and more

3. Match the delivery form to the cat

  • Soft chews: convenient when a cat accepts the texture and flavor, but the cat must reliably eat the full piece.
  • Capsules: provide a defined amount, yet some cats resist pilling. Ask a veterinary team to demonstrate safe administration.
  • Powders: can work when thoroughly mixed into a small portion of food the cat will definitely finish; mixing into a full bowl can lead to an unknown dose.
  • Liquids: may be easier to measure, but taste, storage, and oxidation or rancidity precautions matter.

4. Check quality signals without confusing them with efficacy

Recognized quality programs, batch testing, lot numbers, expiration dates, and a manufacturer willing to disclose testing are useful signals. They help answer “Is the product likely to contain what the label says?” They do not answer “Will it relieve this cat’s OA?” A quality seal is not a clinical outcome.

5. Screen for veterinary fit

Bring the complete label to the veterinarian, including inactive ingredients. The review should include the cat’s diagnoses, kidney or liver status, gastrointestinal history, pregnancy status, current medicines, prescription diets, and every other supplement. VCA warns that nutraceuticals are not regulated or tested like pharmaceuticals and may be harmful or interact with medicines.

Reading the label beyond the front panel

Front-of-package claims often list a blend without explaining how much of each ingredient it contains. Turn the container over and identify the serving size, number of servings, complete active-ingredient panel, inactive ingredients, storage instructions, lot number, expiration date, and manufacturer contact information. If a proprietary blend prevents you from seeing individual amounts, you cannot compare it fairly with a product that discloses them.

For omega-3 products, distinguish total oil from the actual EPA-plus-DHA amount. A cat eating an omega-3-enriched therapeutic food may already receive EPA and DHA, so adding a supplement could change the total intake. The 60–70 mg/kg guideline figure is combined EPA and DHA, not total fish oil and not a target to calculate independently. Ask the veterinarian to total all dietary and supplemental sources.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also check whether the suggested serving is per cat, per kilogram, or based on a weight range. A label that gives only a broad range may require veterinary interpretation. Do not split, open, or crush a capsule unless the manufacturer and veterinary team say that doing so is appropriate, because taste, stability, or dose delivery can change.

Price, availability, and value checks

Current prices and inventory were not independently verified for the documented products, and PDSA is a UK retailer. Before purchasing, confirm that the exact formula is sold in your country and that the listing matches the package you will receive. Marketplace listings can show an old photograph or a different regional label.

When prices are available, compare cost per labeled daily serving rather than the ticket price alone. Include the number of chews or capsules required each day, shipping, and any calories in a chew. A large bottle is not necessarily cheaper if the daily serving is larger or the cat refuses part of it. Do not choose a product solely because it is inexpensive, and do not assume a premium price proves superior efficacy.

Product notes in detail

VetriScience Healthy Hip & Joint Soft Chews

PetMD’s veterinary panel named these soft chews its overall cat joint-supplement pick. PetMD says the selection process considered combinations of ingredients, published evidence, brand reputation, the NASC seal, and ease of administration. That makes the product a reasonable label to investigate if your cat accepts a chew.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The recommendation has boundaries. The available material does not provide a current full label or establish that the product itself was tested in a controlled feline OA trial. Do not infer that a panel pick treats arthritis, that it supplies the guideline’s EPA/DHA target, or that it is suitable for a cat taking a particular medicine. Verify all of those points on the package and with your veterinarian.

PDSA Vet Care Joint Care Supplement for Cats

PDSA Pet Store reports the following per capsule:

Component Reported amount per capsule
Glucosamine HCl 150 mg
Green-lipped mussel (containing natural chondroitin) 100 mg
Hyaluronic acid 0.75 mg
Manganese 1.5 mg
Vitamin E 1 mg
Natural antioxidant 0.4 mg

The same page says the product is not suitable for pregnant or lactating queens and that results vary. It is a UK retailer listing, so do not assume the product is sold elsewhere or that another country’s label is identical. The listed ingredients also should not be presented as established OA therapy: Merck reports no supportive pain-management evidence for glucosamine/chondroitin in canine and feline OA, and hyaluronic-acid benefit in cats is considered questionable.

Questions to resolve before buying

  • What diagnosis is causing the mobility change, and has pain been assessed?
  • What is the exact amount of each active ingredient per daily serving?
  • Does the cat already receive EPA or DHA from a therapeutic food or another supplement?
  • Are there pregnancy, lactation, kidney, liver, gastrointestinal, allergy, or medication concerns?
  • Can the cat reliably consume the entire serving without food refusal?
  • How will improvement or side effects be measured, and when will the plan be reviewed?

If a seller cannot answer basic questions about ingredients, lot traceability, expiration, or intended species, choose a different product or ask the veterinary clinic for an alternative. A veterinarian can also explain whether a supplement trial is reasonable or whether the cat needs diagnostics or prescribed pain control first.

What a veterinarian-led arthritis plan includes

The American College of Veterinary Surgeons describes OA care as multimodal. A supplement, if used, is only one component and may or may not reduce signs. The plan can include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Diagnosis and pain assessment: reluctance to jump, less play, altered grooming, hiding, irritability, or difficulty using stairs can indicate pain even when a cat does not limp.
  • Weight management: excess body weight increases mechanical load and can make mobility harder. Weight loss should be gradual and supervised so the cat does not stop eating.
  • Environmental changes: ramps or steps to favorite locations, low-sided litter boxes, nonslip surfaces, accessible food and water, and soft, warm bedding reduce the need to jump or climb.
  • Veterinary treatments: your veterinarian may discuss analgesia, rehabilitation, therapeutic diets, or other options based on examination findings and laboratory results.

Do not stop prescribed pain treatment because a supplement has been started. A cat that becomes suddenly weak, stops eating, cannot use a limb, or appears acutely distressed needs prompt veterinary attention rather than a trial of a supplement.

How to introduce a supplement safely

  1. Record a baseline. For several days, note jumping, stair use, play, grooming, litter-box access, appetite, and sleep. A short video of normal movement can help the veterinarian.
  2. Review the label with the clinic. Confirm the feline dose, contraindications, calorie contribution, and interactions with medicines or diets. Ask whether the cat’s signs could have another cause.
  3. Start only as directed. If an omega-3 product is chosen, the ISFM/AAFP guideline’s quarter-to-half starting approach is a general strategy to limit gastrointestinal upset; it is not a dose to apply without veterinary calculation.
  4. Give it consistently. Use the same measured amount and delivery method. Do not double a dose after a missed serving.
  5. Monitor tolerability. Watch for vomiting, diarrhea, appetite loss, itching, unusual bruising or bleeding, lethargy, or worsening mobility. Stop and contact the veterinarian if concerning signs appear.
  6. Reassess rather than assuming success. Agree on a review date and objective measures. If mobility does not improve, the diagnosis and pain plan need reassessment; adding more supplements is not automatically the answer.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Equating “natural” with safe: VCA states, “Nutraceuticals are not subjected to the same testing and regulation as pharmaceuticals.” The statement appears on guidance updated November 14, 2022.
  • Assuming popularity proves benefit: VCA also states, “Despite the popularity of glucosamine/chondroitin supplements, research to support definitive benefits is lacking.”
  • Using a human product: Human formulations can deliver inappropriate doses or unsafe additional ingredients.
  • Counting a combination trial as proof of each ingredient: The nine-week feline study tested a combined diet, not isolated glucosamine, chondroitin, mussel, EPA, or DHA.
  • Ignoring calories: Chews can add calories that undermine a weight-management plan.
  • Buying from an untraceable source: Avoid products without a complete label, lot information, expiration date, or a way to contact the manufacturer.
  • Expecting a cure: A supplement cannot repair every cause of stiffness and should never delay diagnosis of painful disease.

Answers to the questions owners ask most

Do joint supplements for cats really work?

Some cats may show improvement, but reliable pain-relief evidence is limited and ingredient-specific. One controlled nine-week study found higher activity with a diet combining EPA/DHA, green-lipped mussel, and glucosamine/chondroitin; it did not identify the active ingredient or validate every commercial supplement. Merck reports no supportive pain-management evidence for glucosamine/chondroitin in canine and feline OA.

What is the best joint supplement for cats?

There is no evidence-based universal winner. PetMD’s veterinary panel selected VetriScience Healthy Hip & Joint Soft Chews, while PDSA documents a separate capsule product with the amounts listed above. Those are different kinds of evidence, and neither establishes superiority or guaranteed benefit. The best choice for an individual cat is the product whose disclosed formula, administration method, and safety profile fit that cat’s veterinary plan.

Should I give my cat glucosamine and chondroitin?

Ask the veterinarian who knows your cat. These ingredients are commonly used and ACVS says supplements are usually well tolerated, but it also says they may or may not reduce OA signs. Merck’s review found no evidence of beneficial pain-management effects, so they should not replace proven pain care.

Are omega-3 supplements more promising?

Omega-3-enriched foods and supplements have some guideline support, but the feline evidence base is small: the 2024 ISFM/AAFP guideline cites only three qualifying studies. If your veterinarian recommends omega-3, verify the actual EPA and DHA amounts and introduce it cautiously to limit gastrointestinal upset.

Can I use a dog or human joint product?

Do not do so without explicit veterinary direction. Species, concentration, additives, and serving sizes differ, and a human label is not a safe dosing guide for a cat.

How long should I try a supplement?

There is no universally validated trial length for commercial feline supplements. The controlled diet study lasted nine weeks, but that does not establish a required duration for another product. Set a review date with the veterinarian, track the same mobility measures, and stop or change course if adverse effects occur or no meaningful benefit is seen.

Can I combine more than one joint product?

Do not combine products casually. Ingredients can overlap, especially EPA, DHA, vitamins, minerals, or glucosamine, and the total amount may be unclear. Give the clinic every label so the veterinarian can decide whether combining products is appropriate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a capsule better than a chew?

Neither form is proven superior for feline OA. A capsule may disclose a precise amount, while a chew may be easier for a cat that accepts it. The practical choice is the form your cat will consume completely and consistently without stress.

Bottom line for 2026 buyers

Choose transparency over a “miracle” claim: a cat-specific label, exact amounts, practical administration, traceable quality controls, and veterinary approval. Use the PetMD pick or the PDSA capsule only as documented options to investigate, not as proof that supplements treat OA. The most important intervention is a proper pain and mobility assessment, followed by a multimodal plan that may include weight control, home adaptations, prescribed treatment, and—when appropriate—a carefully monitored supplement.

Can I use a human or dog supplement for my cat?

Not without explicit veterinary direction. Concentrations, additives, and serving sizes differ, and human labels are not safe feline dosing guides.

What should I check on a supplement label?

Verify feline species and life-stage directions, exact amounts per serving, EPA and DHA amounts when applicable, inactive ingredients, exclusions, lot and expiration information, storage instructions, and manufacturer contact details.

Are omega-3 supplements safe for every cat?

Not necessarily. The 2024 ISFM/AAFP guideline provides general EPA/DHA context, but a veterinarian should account for weight, existing dietary omega-3, health conditions, and medicines and introduce products cautiously.

Should supplements replace prescribed arthritis treatment?

No. Supplements may or may not reduce signs and should be part of a veterinarian-led multimodal plan, not a replacement for diagnosis or prescribed pain care.
