If your cat licks the carpet, the key question is whether they are only licking it or also chewing and swallowing fibers. Licking by itself does not establish pica: VCA defines pica as persistent ingestion of non-food items. Carpet licking can have behavioral or health-related explanations, but it is not a diagnosis. If the behavior continues, escalates, or involves swallowing fibers, contact your veterinarian.
Five possible explanations for carpet licking
These are possible angles to consider, not a validated or ranked list of carpet-specific causes. Veterinary sources discuss licking and pica more broadly; they do not establish why a particular cat is licking a carpet.

1. Mouthing or ingesting a non-food item
Some cats lick, chew, or swallow non-food materials. VCA defines pica as persistent ingestion of non-food items, so licking without swallowing is not enough to call the behavior pica. Chewing carpet and swallowing fibers makes non-food ingestion a more relevant concern. VCA’s overview of pica in cats describes possible causes and risks.

2. Stress or a developing habit
Changes such as moving home, a pet joining or leaving the household, or a changed schedule can cause anxiety in some cats. Licking may occur as a displacement behavior and can become habitual. Cornell discusses these factors in relation to excessive licking generally; it does not identify them as proven carpet-specific causes. See Cornell’s guidance on cats that lick too much.

3. A medical or behavioral condition associated with pica
VCA lists gastrointestinal conditions, anemia, anxiety, compulsive disorders, malnutrition, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, and brain conditions among possible contributors to pica. These are possibilities a veterinarian may assess, not conditions that can be inferred from carpet licking alone. The distinction matters: assuming the behavior is boredom or stress could overlook a health issue.
4. Discomfort or another cause of excessive licking
Cats may lick in response to itch or pain. Cornell’s discussion concerns licking generally, not licking carpets as a sign of a specific painful or itchy condition. If your cat is also licking their body, seems uncomfortable, or has other changes in health, tell your veterinarian what you have observed.

5. Attraction to the surface or residue
The veterinary sources cited here do not establish carpet texture, scent, or residue as a cause. You can note where and when the behavior happens, including whether a particular spot or recent carpet treatment is involved, but treat any apparent connection as an observation rather than an explanation. If a cleaner or other hazardous substance may be on the carpet, follow the safety guidance below.
Tell licking apart from swallowing
- Licking: Your cat touches the carpet with their tongue but does not appear to bite off or swallow material. This alone does not meet VCA’s definition of pica.
- Chewing or swallowing: Your cat pulls at the carpet, bites off fibers, or you suspect they have swallowed them. Contact your veterinarian for advice; swallowed non-food material can cause an obstruction or other injury. Cornell warns that swallowed fabric can cause life-threatening gastrointestinal obstruction in its discussion of destructive behavior.
- Behavior with signs of illness: Vomiting, pain, reduced appetite, or other health changes alongside suspected ingestion warrant prompt veterinary advice.
When to contact a veterinarian
Contact a veterinarian if carpet licking persists or escalates, if your cat is chewing or swallowing fibers, or if you notice other changes in their health. If ingestion is suspected and your cat appears unwell, seek prompt advice rather than waiting to see whether the behavior stops on its own.

What to note before you call
- Whether your cat licks, chews, or appears to swallow carpet material.
- How often the behavior happens and whether it is becoming more frequent.
- Where it occurs and whether you have noticed a pattern in timing or location.
- Any vomiting, pain, appetite change, or other health changes.
- Any possible exposure to a carpet cleaner or other hazardous substance.
These observations can help your veterinarian assess the situation; they do not identify the cause on their own. A behaviorist may be considered if medical causes of pica have been ruled out. VCA discusses that possibility in its pica guidance.
