Yes. Cats can get fleas in winter. Cold weather can reduce flea activity outdoors, but it does not guarantee that a cat or home is flea-free: adult fleas can live on animal hosts, while protected indoor spaces and heated homes can support flea development. If your cat is scratching or you spot fleas, check the coat and ask your veterinarian about cat-safe treatment and prevention.
Why fleas can persist through winter
Fleas rely on more than outdoor conditions. Adult fleas live on animals, while eggs and immature stages develop in the surrounding environment. In cold climates, fleas may survive on cats, dogs, or wild mammals, or in protected places. The Companion Animal Parasite Council describes sheltered indoor areas such as carpets, under furniture, and along baseboards as potential sites for development.

A heated home can provide a favorable environment even when it is cold outside. VCA Animal Hospitals notes that carpets and central heating can support year-round development. Eggs can fall from an animal into the home, and immature stages can remain in the environment before adult fleas emerge. That is why a winter flea problem can appear even if a cat rarely goes outdoors. Cornell’s College of Veterinary Medicine likewise notes that fleas can thrive indoors and supports year-round prevention.
There is no single winter temperature that reliably rules out fleas everywhere. Survival depends on conditions in the flea’s immediate environment, including temperature, humidity, and shelter. Outdoor exposure varies too, so an indoor cat may have less exposure than an outdoor cat without being guaranteed protection.

How to tell whether your cat might have fleas
Look for scratching, biting or licking at the coat, over-grooming, redness, or hair loss. Dark specks in the fur may be flea dirt, or flea feces. Some cats show few obvious signs, and grooming can remove fleas or other evidence, so not seeing a flea does not rule out a problem.
A flea comb can help you inspect the coat for adult fleas or flea dirt, but a visual check is not a definitive diagnosis. Persistent itching, skin lesions, or a heavy flea burden calls for veterinary advice. Kittens, older cats, and cats with other health problems need particular attention: a severe infestation can cause blood loss and anemia in vulnerable animals.

What to do if you find fleas
- Contact your veterinarian about treatment. The right choice depends on the individual cat and local circumstances. Ask about the cat’s age, weight, health, other animals in the household, and the product’s current label directions.
- Use only a product labeled for cats. Follow the current label exactly. VCA warns that some flea products made for dogs can be poisonous to cats; do not transfer a dog product or dose to a cat.
- Address the home as well as the cat. Wash pet bedding and vacuum frequently, especially the areas where your cat rests. Environmental stages can persist in protected places, so managing an established infestation may take time.
- Keep checking and follow the treatment plan. Ask your veterinarian what follow-up is appropriate if fleas or itching continue. Do not assume that treating the cat once has addressed flea stages in the environment.
How to reduce the chance of winter fleas
Ask your veterinarian whether year-round flea prevention is appropriate for your cat. Cornell recommends year-round prevention as best practice, but product eligibility, directions, and availability vary by country and by product. A veterinarian can help choose a suitable option; follow the current local label rather than relying on a general rule for collars, topical treatments, or oral medicines.
