Set up a litter box that is roomy, easy to reach, quiet, and kept clean—and offer enough boxes in separate places. These steps can make good litter-box habits easier, but a sudden change in where or how your cat eliminates can signal a medical problem. A new pattern deserves veterinary attention rather than an assumption that your cat is misbehaving.

1. How many litter boxes should you have?

A useful starting point is one litter box per cat, plus one extra. For two cats, that means three boxes. Put them in different locations: boxes clustered together may function as a single resource from a cat’s perspective. In a multilevel home, provide a box on each floor. Make sure another pet cannot block the route or corner a cat while it uses the box. Feline Veterinary Medical Association (FelineVMA) owner guidance, 2026, recommends this arrangement as a rule of thumb.

2. What size litter box does a cat need?

Choose a box large enough for your cat to turn around and posture comfortably. FelineVMA’s 2026 guideline is a box about 1.5 times the cat’s length, measured from nose to the base of the tail. Many commercial boxes may be too small; a suitably sized storage container or concrete mixing tray can be an alternative if it is safe for your cat and easy to clean.

There is no single best design for every cat. If your cat avoids a box, consider its dimensions and whether the sides leave enough room to move, rather than assuming the cat needs a different litter immediately.

#1 Best Overall
Idymere Stainless Steel High Sided Cat Litter Box
  • Large Capacity: The Idymere stainless steel litter box measures 16.93"L x 12.99"W x 5.12"H, offering ample space for kitty, kittens, elderly cats or medium cats to do their business comfortably. This litter box is ideal for single or multiple small-cat households. The open design of this large litter box promotes air circulation and helps reduce unpleasant odors, ensuring your pets have a fresh and comfortable environment.
  • Strong and Sturdy: Made of high-quality stainless steel, this litter box resists corrosion, wear, and rust. Unlike plastic litter boxes, it does not trap residue or odors, helping keep your home smelling clean. The sturdy, non-porous surface of the metal litter box prevents scratches where dirt and smells can hide, creating a healthier space for your cat.
  • Easy Cleaning: The spacious stainless steel design of this cat litter box requires less frequent litter changes. The smooth surface of the litter pan prevents waste from sticking, allowing litter and debris to slide easily to the bottom for quick cleaning. It’s especially useful for cats that kick litter or urinate high, and it dries fast for simple maintenance.
  • High Sides & Safe Rounded Edges: Featuring raised sides, this stainless steel litter box effectively contains litter scatter—perfect for energetic or large cats. The litter box with high sides also help prevent urine and feces from adhering to the sides. The kitten litter box with smooth, rounded edges ensure safety for your cat and make the metal litter box easy to lift without hurting your hands.
  • Versatile Use & Multiple Sizes: This stainless steel litter box suits various pets, including adult cats, kittens, rabbits, ferrets, and snakes. This stainless steel box can also double as a pet bathing tub or storage container. Available in several sizes, you can choose the best fit litter tray for your pet without taking up too much space, ensuring comfort and flexibility for different needs.

3. Make the entrance easy to use

A high-sided box can be difficult for kittens, older cats, or cats with mobility problems. Choose a low-entry option when stepping over the sides seems uncomfortable. If you adapt a container by cutting an entrance, check that the edge is smooth and has no sharp sections.

4. Which litter do cats prefer?

Many cats prefer soft, unscented clumping litter. FelineVMA notes that cats may dislike scented or dusty litter, deodorizers, and liners. Preference still varies from cat to cat, so treat a change as a trial rather than a guaranteed fix.

If you are unsure what your cat likes, offer different litter types or depths in separate boxes. Changing one feature at a time can make it easier to notice which setup your cat chooses. Avoid making a sudden switch if your cat is already using its current litter reliably.

5. Where should you put a cat’s litter box?

Choose a quiet, accessible place with a safe way in and out. Keep the box away from food and water, busy walkways, and places where another cat can guard the approach. A box tucked into a corner or closet may leave a cat feeling trapped, even if the location seems private to a person. The right spot offers privacy without making access difficult.

6. How often should you scoop and wash the box?

Remove waste at least once a day. FelineVMA recommends washing the box every one to four weeks with soap and hot water. Avoid strong chemicals and ammonia-based products. Cornell University’s guidance also notes that daily cleaning is important for controlling some parasite risks; shed Toxoplasma oocysts can take approximately one to five days to become infective. See Cornell’s overview of gastrointestinal parasites in cats, updated June 2018.

7. What should you do after a litter-box accident?

Clean the soiled area promptly and neutralize the odor rather than just covering it. Avoid ammonia-containing cleaners. Lingering odor may draw a cat back to the same spot, while punishment does not address why the cat eliminated there.

House-soiling can be linked to illness, discomfort getting into the box, dislike of the box or litter, or a preference for another site. Look for practical changes to the setup, but do not treat the behavior as spite. Cornell’s house-soiling guidance, updated January 2015, discusses medical and behavioral causes. Urine spraying is a different marking behavior: it often involves small amounts on vertical surfaces while the cat stands with its tail raised and quivering.

8. Why did your cat suddenly stop using the litter box?

A sudden change can have a medical cause, including urinary or digestive illness, arthritis or another mobility problem. Do not assume it is only a behavioral issue or try to diagnose it by changing litter-box supplies. FelineVMA’s 2026 owner guidance states: “Every cat that starts to house-soil requires a thorough physical examination and urinalysis to check for medical problems such as infections, cystitis, arthritis, kidney problems, diabetes, and other medical issues.” Contact your veterinarian about a new change in elimination.

Know the urinary emergency sign

If your cat repeatedly strains and passes little or no urine, seek immediate veterinary care. Cornell identifies possible urethral obstruction as an emergency; it can be life-threatening. Do not wait to see whether a box change resolves it. Read Cornell’s feline lower urinary tract disease guidance, updated October 2016.
