Cats use meows in different situations, but no sound has one guaranteed translation. A call may be a greeting, a request, or a sign of frustration; its setting, accompanying body language, and whether it is normal for that cat matter more than pitch or length alone. These eight patterns are practical clues, not a fixed feline dictionary.
Why do cats meow at people?
Adult cats commonly direct meows toward people, while kittens use them to communicate with their mothers. Adult cats do not typically meow to one another, though this is a common pattern rather than an absolute rule. Greeting, food, attention, play, and access are among the everyday situations that can prompt a meow. The same cat may use different calls in different situations, and the same kind of call can serve different purposes. ASPCA’s meowing guidance and PetMD’s overview of cat meows both emphasize interpreting vocal behavior in context.

A 2020 review of feline vocal communication describes a flexible repertoire and notes that up to 21 different vocalizations have been described in the literature; the authors caution that classification can be uncertain and that more types may exist. That figure does not mean there are exactly eight meow meanings. The review also notes that environment and situation affect vocal behavior.

1. The greeting meow
A cat may call when you come home, approach, or speak to it. A brief, soft sound can occur in a greeting, but shortness does not prove that the cat is happy. Look for the cat’s approach and relaxed behavior, and compare the call with its usual greeting.
2. The attention or social-contact meow
Some cats vocalize to invite interaction, stroking, or play. If meowing has reliably brought a response, the cat may have learned to use it to get your attention. Consider what happens immediately before and after the call rather than assuming that every meow is a request to be petted. ASPCA and PetMD’s guidance on frequent meowing discuss common social and learned reasons.
3. The food-request meow
Calls near the bowl, kitchen, or usual feeding time may be food solicitation. Check that the cat’s normal feeding needs are being met, and note whether the behavior follows a predictable schedule. If hunger or meowing is new or unusually intense, do not assume the explanation is simply appetite: a health issue may need to be ruled out.

If the pattern is clearly tied to an early-morning meal and the cat’s health and feeding needs have been considered, ASPCA notes that a scheduled automatic feeder may shift the request toward the feeder. This is a timing strategy, not a solution for unexplained vocalizing or a substitute for veterinary care.
4. The access or “let me through” meow
A cat may call at a closed door to ask for entry or exit. Check where the cat is, what is on the other side, and whether it seems unable to reach something it needs. Repeated calls behind a door can mean it is asking to be let out or in, rather than seeking food or attention.
5. The play or anticipation call
Some cats meow around play or when an activity is about to begin. A call near a toy, during an invitation to interact, or as part of a familiar routine may fit this pattern. The situation and accompanying behavior are more useful clues than the sound alone.

6. The frustrated or insistent meow
Persistent or lower-pitched calls can occur with frustration, boredom, anxiety, or discomfort. Pitch alone cannot tell you which, and it cannot diagnose a cause. Look for a blocked goal, a change in routine, signs of avoidance, or other behavior that differs from the cat’s baseline.
7. The chirp or trill
Chirps and trills are related feline vocalizations, not simply another label for a meow. They may be contact- or desire-related; trills are also described as greeting calls. A cat may chirp or trill in a moment of interest or excitement, but context still matters. The 2020 review and The International Cat Association’s discussion of cat sounds describe these calls without establishing one universal meaning.
8. The yowl or caterwaul
A yowl or caterwaul is a long, often loud call. Reproductive behavior, especially in cats that are not spayed or neutered, can be one context. Similar calls can also accompany pain, fear, discomfort, or cognitive change, so sound alone cannot distinguish them. A new or unexplained yowl deserves veterinary advice.

How to read a meow without guessing
Compare the call with the whole moment and with the individual cat’s usual behavior:
- Setting and trigger: Did it happen at arrival, mealtime, a door, during play, or at night?
- Body language: Notice posture, ears, tail, approach, and avoidance. These can add context, though no single gesture proves what the cat wants.
- Individual baseline: Is this a familiar call for this cat, or does it sound or occur differently?
- Pattern over time: Is the vocalizing new, more frequent, or changing in quality?
- Other changes: Has anything else about health or behavior changed?
PetMD notes that situation, body language, and tone all matter; the 2020 review cautions that vocal categories can be difficult to distinguish and that environment affects vocal behavior. There is no reliable basis here for translating a particular pitch, volume, or length into a specific need independently of context.

How videos can help—and what they cannot tell you
A short clip can help you notice observable differences, such as a brief greeting call, repeated solicitation, a chirp or trill, a yowl, or a caterwaul. Its value is in showing what the sound and setting looked like together—not proving that the cat felt one particular emotion or wanted one particular thing.

When using a clip to compare calls, note the situation in which it was recorded: what happened just beforehand, where the cat was, what its body was doing, and whether the sound is typical for it. When a changed meow needs veterinary attention
Do not dismiss a sudden increase or a changed voice as simply talkativeness. ASPCA advises a veterinary assessment to rule out medical causes. In its “Meowing and Yowling” guidance, ASPCA states: “A cat who meows a lot should be checked thoroughly by a veterinarian to ensure a medical condition is not the cause of the cat’s distress.”
Contact a veterinarian about frequent nighttime meowing, vocalizing in the litter box, a marked increase in calls, or a changed or raspy meow. A new voice change is especially worth discussing if it occurs alongside other symptoms or behavior changes. VCA’s vocalization guidance and PetMD’s advice on excessive meowing describe these as patterns to take seriously. A recording may help you describe what you have heard, but it cannot diagnose the cause.

Other cat sounds that are not meows
It helps to distinguish related sounds rather than force them into the eight meow patterns. Purring can accompany contentment, but also stress, fear, sickness, or pain. Hissing and growling are defensive warnings. Chirps, trills, yowls, and caterwauls have their own patterns and should be interpreted with the situation and the cat’s behavior in mind.
