Do cats go grey as they age? The veterinary sources available do not establish greying as a routine or predictable part of feline aging. A change in coat color is an observation, not a diagnosis: it may be a simple variation, but bleached patches or color change alongside skin or health symptoms deserve attention.
Is greying a normal part of feline aging?
There is no established feline greying timeline in the veterinary guidance cited here, and no prevalence figure showing how often cats develop age-related grey fur. Cats can experience coat-color changes, but that alone does not show that age is the cause.

Cornell’s senior-cat guidance says many cats begin to encounter age-related physical changes between 7 and 10 years, and most do so by 12. Those ages describe broad changes associated with aging—not when a cat’s coat should turn grey. The American Association of Feline Practitioners recommends starting senior preventive health care between 7 and 11 years of age; this is a care-guideline range, not a greying threshold. What kind of coat-color change are you seeing?
Gradual or diffuse change
A coat that looks lighter or different overall does not identify a specific cause. Appearance alone cannot establish whether the change is related to age, health, or another factor. Note when it began and whether the skin, hair density, grooming, or your cat’s general condition has changed.

Distinct white or bleached patches
Merck describes vitiligo in cats as bleached areas of skin that may sometimes affect the hair coat and claws. It usually begins in young adulthood and causes no other health problems. That description does not mean every white patch is vitiligo; a veterinarian must assess the cat rather than diagnose the cause from color alone. When should a coat change be checked by a veterinarian?
Arrange a veterinary assessment if the color change appears with signs such as:

- Changes in your cat’s overall condition
Hair loss is a sign whose cause needs to be determined; evaluation may involve your cat’s history, a physical examination, and tests. Skin disease can also require examination and, depending on the findings, diagnostic testing. Do not assume a color change or hair loss proves vitiligo, a nutritional deficiency, or another particular condition. Older cats may groom themselves less effectively, which can contribute to matting, odor, and inflammation. Regular, gentle brushing can remove loose hairs and dead skin cells and help keep the coat clean. Use a gentle cat brush if your cat tolerates it, and avoid pulling at mats. Brushing supports coat maintenance; it does not reverse pigment change or treat its underlying cause. Could diet or health affect coat appearance?
Coat changes can be considered alongside nutrition and other health factors, but the coat’s appearance alone cannot identify a deficiency or tell you that a diet change or supplement is needed.
