A cat microchip is a small, passive identification device implanted under the skin. When a compatible scanner is brought near it, the chip returns a unique ID number. A registry connects that number to contact details provided by the owner. It is not GPS: the chip cannot show your cat’s live location, and the number is useful only if the record is registered and current.

How does a cat microchip work?

The chip is a passive radio-frequency identification (RFID) transponder sealed inside a small glass capsule. It has no battery. A compatible scanner emits radio waves that briefly energize the chip, which then sends its unique identification number back to the scanner. A person uses that number to identify the relevant registry and follow up with the owner. AAHA explains the scanning and identification process.

The chip stores an ID number, not your name, address or phone number. Those details are kept by a registry and must be linked to the number. The number by itself does not tell a finder how to contact you.

Can a microchip track my cat or provide GPS?

No. A microchip is an identification device, not a location tracker. It does not transmit continuously, use GPS or show where a cat has gone. A scanner has to be brought close enough to read the chip. As AAHA states in its May 19, 2026 FAQ, “Microchips are identification devices, not GPS trackers.”

How is a cat microchip implanted?

A veterinarian, or someone working under veterinary supervision, places the chip just beneath the skin using a sterile needle and preloaded syringe. The usual placement is around the shoulder-blade area. It is a brief, injection-like procedure and generally does not require surgery or anesthesia. The needle is larger than those used for many routine injections, so there may be brief discomfort. Follow the veterinarian’s aftercare instructions. AAHA’s implantation guidance describes the procedure and veterinary supervision.

Do you have to register a cat’s microchip?

Yes. Registration links the chip number to your contact information; implantation alone does not complete that step. Register the number with the appropriate registry and update the record whenever your phone number, email or address changes.

In the United States, there is no single centralized microchip registry. If you do not know which registry holds the record, AAHA’s Microchip Registry Lookup can use the chip number to identify registries that may have registration information. It does not reveal an owner’s contact details and cannot update a record for you; contact the registry directly to register or change information. If you adopted your cat, ask the shelter or veterinarian to scan the chip and help transfer or update its registration. AAHA explains the lookup tool’s limits.

What should I do if my cat is lost?

A microchip can help a finder identify a cat, but it cannot be read without a scanner. A veterinarian, shelter or other trained staff member can scan for the number, then use the relevant registry to contact the listed owner. A collar with a current ID tag gives someone who finds your cat a visible way to contact you without first finding a scanner or registry. The two forms of identification serve different purposes: AAHA recommends that microchips complement, rather than replace, ID tags.

In figures reported by AAHA in 2026 and attributed to the AVMA, 38.5% of microchipped cats in the cited shelter study were returned to their owners, compared with 1.8% of cats without microchips. The study involved more than 7,700 stray animals; these are results from that study context, not a guarantee for an individual cat or a universal return rate. AAHA’s benefits page and lookup-tool FAQ report the comparison.

How do you check that a microchip still works?

Ask a veterinarian to scan the chip annually. Scanning can check that it is detectable and help establish its location. A chip can migrate from its original implantation site, and scanner and chip types may differ, so staff should scan systematically rather than relying on a quick pass at one spot. Ask the veterinarian to confirm the number and registry, and make sure the registry’s contact details are current. AAHA recommends annual scanning.

Are cat microchips safe?

Complications are uncommon, according to the AVMA. Migration from the implantation site is the most frequently reported issue and can make a chip harder to find if scanning is incomplete. Other uncommon reported problems include chip failure and local swelling, infection or hair loss. Tumors near microchips have been reported in a very small number of dogs and cats, but a causal relationship has not been established. The AVMA’s microchipping FAQ discusses reported risks.

Do chip type and scanner matter for travel?

Yes. AAHA identifies the 15-digit chip as the international standard under ISO 11784/11785. The AVMA says ISO-compliant chips operate at 134.2 kHz and notes that chips in the United States also use other frequencies, including 125 kHz and 128 kHz. Universal scanners can read commonly used chip types, but no scanner should be assumed to detect every chip in every situation. AAHA’s lookup-tool FAQ and the AVMA FAQ describe the standard and frequency differences.

Before international travel, check the destination’s current requirements with your veterinarian or an official government source. Rules vary by jurisdiction and can change, so the general standard alone does not establish that a particular chip meets every destination’s requirements.
