There is no well-supported list of five established Egyptian Mau mixed breeds. The Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) describes the Egyptian Mau as a natural breed with no allowable outcross breeds in its standard, and its breed council sets documentation rules for registering cats. A spotted coat or Mau-like face is not proof of mixed ancestry.
This guide explains what the breed standard does establish, how to describe a cat whose ancestry is uncertain, and what records and photo permissions you need before presenting a particular animal as an Egyptian Mau mix.

Why there aren’t five verified Egyptian Mau mixes to list
CFA’s Egyptian Mau standard permits no outcross breeds. That does not prove that no individual Mau has ever mated with another type of cat; it means the standard does not support presenting a set of five recognized or established Mau crosses. No reliable statistic on the number or prevalence of Egyptian Mau mixes is available in the sources cited here.

CFA’s Egyptian Mau Breed Council distinguishes registered Maus from native and domestic Egyptian Maus and sets documentation requirements for registration. A visual impression cannot substitute for those records. The policy page identifies itself as dating to February 2009, so consult the registry for current requirements before making a registration decision.

What an Egyptian Mau looks like—and what looks alone cannot prove
The Egyptian Mau is known for its naturally spotted coat. CFA describes silver, bronze, and black smoke colors; TICA also describes gooseberry-green eyes. TICA calls the Mau “the only natural spotted breed of domestic cat.” These are breed descriptions, not a way to determine an individual cat’s ancestry from a photo.
A spotted domestic cat may resemble an Egyptian Mau without having documented Mau ancestry. If a cat’s background is unknown, describe the visible traits—such as “spotted domestic cat” or “Mau-like”—rather than asserting that it is an Egyptian Mau mix. Breed appearance by itself does not establish registry status or parentage.

How to document a particular cat’s ancestry
- Start with records. Look for breeder, adoption, or registry paperwork that identifies the cat and its parents. A claim of ancestry should be traceable to records, not inferred from coat pattern or facial features.
- Check what the registry requires. CFA’s breed council policy sets documentation requirements and distinguishes registry categories. Contact the registry for current guidance rather than treating an informal description as proof of eligibility.
- Separate verified facts from caretaker observations. You can report a caretaker’s account as an account, but identify it as such unless supporting records are available. Temperament descriptions should likewise be attributed to the person who knows the individual cat.
- Use precise captions. If ancestry is not documented, label the animal “Mau-like” or “spotted domestic cat.” Do not present a hypothetical breed pairing as a real or recognized cross.
Using pictures responsibly
Only publish photographs with clear permission for the intended use. The Global Egyptian Mau Society states that its photographs and graphics are copyrighted; do not assume that an image on a breed or society page is free to reuse.

- Keep the source of any ancestry claim with the cat’s caption or editorial records.
- Do not use an attractive spotted-cat photograph to imply a cross that has not been documented.
Care notes for a Mau-like or mixed-ancestry cat
TICA describes Egyptian Maus as active and athletic cats that tend to climb and jump, and recommends providing a perch or cat tree. CFA notes that Maus enjoy interactive games. These breed-profile observations can inform enrichment ideas, but they do not establish that every cat with a similar appearance or uncertain ancestry will have the same needs. Choose activities and furnishings to suit the individual cat.
