How to Introduce a New Pet to Your Home Safely

Keep a new pet in a quiet, secure home base first. Then use gradual, supervised introductions tailored to the species and each animal’s behavior.

Set up a quiet, secure home base for the newcomer, let them settle before expanding access, and keep resident pets separate at first. If animals need to meet, move from scent exchange to brief barrier-based sessions, then to supervised contact only when they are calm. The right pace depends on the animals and species—not a calendar deadline.

Before the new pet arrives

Plan for the newcomer’s daily care and long-term needs, and ask the shelter, rescue, breeder, or previous caregiver about their history with other animals. Arrange a veterinary check, vaccination and parasite guidance, and confirm the clinic treats that species. VCA advises checking an adopted pet before arrival when possible, or soon afterward (VCA adoption guidance; VCA new-pet checklist).

Prepare a separate home base

Choose a quiet room or species-appropriate enclosure where the newcomer can rest without being approached by resident animals. For a cat, provide food and water, litter, bedding, scratching options, toys, and hiding or elevated retreat spots. For other species, follow housing and environmental requirements specific to that animal. Familiar bedding and a predictable routine can help the pet settle.

Pet-proof and plan the layout

Secure objects that could be chewed or swallowed, toxic plants, medications, and household chemicals. Birds are especially sensitive to aerosols; VCA advises bird owners to unplug diffusers. If pets already live in the home, prepare doors, gates, or other suitable barriers, plus separate resting and feeding areas, before bringing the newcomer in. A barrier can support gradual visual introductions, but it does not replace supervision.

VCA’s checklist puts the principle plainly: “Every pet species has unique needs.” Do not assume a setup or introduction method that works for cats and dogs is safe for birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, or prey animals.

Let the newcomer settle before introducing pets

Start the new pet in their home base and let them explore at their own pace. Keep resident animals physically separated while the newcomer becomes familiar with the space and its smells. If useful, rotate which animals have access to shared areas, while ensuring each has a secure place to rest.

Do not force contact. Hiding, avoidance, or apparent disinterest at first does not by itself mean the pet cannot adjust. Expand access gradually as the newcomer appears comfortable in the home base; ASPCA recommends introducing a dog or cat to a new home one room at a time (ASPCA moving guide).

How to introduce a cat to another pet

For a cat meeting a resident cat or dog, use a gradual sequence. Keep the animals in separate territories until they are settled, and do not make a direct encounter their first exposure.

  1. Exchange scents. Swap bedding, or let each animal explore a room after the other has left. You can also feed them on opposite sides of a closed door so they become aware of each other’s scent during a meal.
  2. Allow brief visual access through a barrier. When both animals are comfortable with the scent stage, use a secure gate, screen, or partly opened door that prevents contact. Keep sessions short and calm; end the session or return to an earlier step if either animal becomes distressed.
  3. Try supervised meetings only after calm barrier sessions. If a dog is involved, keep the dog leashed for the first face-to-face meeting. Make sure the cat can retreat to a hiding place or elevated spot, and do not hold the cat in place to force an interaction.
  4. Continue supervision until their behavior is reliably safe. Do not leave the animals together unattended simply because a set number of days has passed.

VCA describes approximately two weeks for one gradual cat-introduction approach, but that is a rough guide, not a deadline or guarantee. Its guidance also recommends one litter box per cat plus one extra (VCA fostering guidance; VCA cat-introduction steps). Provide enough litter access and separate resources to reduce competition.

How to introduce two dogs

Consider each dog’s temperament, health, activity level, and experience with other dogs. Differences in confidence or energy can make an introduction more difficult. Where possible, start in neutral surroundings with controlled, short sessions. Watch closely, reward calm behavior, and give each dog room to disengage and rest (VCA dog-introduction guidance).

  • Feed the dogs separately.
  • Put away valued toys, chews, and other resources that could prompt competition during early meetings.
  • Separate them when nobody can supervise, and initially at bedtime.
  • Do not punish growling. VCA’s guidance says, “Punishment should be avoided.” A growl can warn that tension is rising; create distance and separate the dogs safely rather than suppressing that warning.

When to pause or get help

Stop a session and separate the animals if you cannot keep the interaction safe or either animal is distressed. Return to a less intense stage rather than pushing through. Seek guidance from a veterinarian or a qualified behavior professional if introductions are difficult, aggression is a concern, or you are unsure how to house a particular species and pairing safely. Keep animals separated whenever you cannot supervise them safely.

Introductions involving other species

Housing and contact rules vary substantially among mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish. Dog-and-cat steps should not be generalized to these animals or to predator-and-prey pairings. Ask a veterinarian or species-qualified behavior professional for advice on the specific animals, enclosure needs, and whether direct contact is appropriate at all.
