One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIf your cat is not eating after your move, the disruption may be contributing: unfamiliar rooms, noise, changed routines, a different feeding spot, or new food can put a cat off its meal. But a move does not prove that stress is the cause. Pain and illness can also reduce appetite, so contact your veterinarian promptly if your cat stops eating or eats substantially less.
Can moving make a cat stop eating?
Yes. A move changes familiar surroundings and routines, and the unpacking, noise, visitors, or a new place for food can unsettle a cat. The PDSA also lists changes to food, routine, and bowl location as possible reasons a cat may not eat. These are plausible stressors, not a diagnosis: stress and illness can occur at the same time.

There is no reliable adjustment timetable for an individual cat’s appetite. A cat’s settling into a new territory is not the same as recovering from appetite loss, so do not wait for a presumed adjustment period before seeking veterinary advice.

Reduced appetite can have medical causes as well as behavioral ones. Cornell lists conditions including dental and gastrointestinal disease, kidney disease, diabetes, pancreatitis, hyperthyroidism, and fever among possible causes; pain and other diseases can also affect eating. A recent move may be relevant history for your veterinarian, but it cannot rule these problems out.

Cornell’s Feline Health Center warns that anorexia can severely affect a mature cat’s health if it persists for as little as 24 hours. For a kitten younger than six weeks, food avoidance for 12 hours can pose a lethal threat. These figures are reasons to seek advice promptly, not safe periods to wait out. Call your veterinarian for guidance on your cat’s circumstances; if your usual clinic is unavailable or your cat seems acutely unwell, contact a local emergency veterinary service.
As Cornell lecturer Carolyn McDaniel, VMD, puts it: “A cat that is not eating deserves to have a full veterinary workup—a thorough physical exam followed by any lab work and imaging that’s indicated by the exam.”

What to do while arranging veterinary advice
- Call your veterinarian. Explain when the move happened, when your cat last ate normally, how much it has eaten since, and any other changes you have noticed. Ask how urgently your cat should be seen.
- Set up one quiet, secure room. Keep your cat away from unpacking, loud activity, and visitors where practical. Put water, the usual food, a litter box, and familiar dishes in the room.
- Add familiar belongings and keep the routine steady. Offer familiar bedding, toys, or other objects, and visit calmly. Keep feeding and other everyday routines as consistent as you can.
- Make the carrier available. VCA recommends leaving it open and accessible so it remains a familiar object rather than appearing only when your cat must be moved.
- Let your cat explore when the home is safe. Once the room and rest of the home are secure, allow exploration at your cat’s pace rather than forcing contact or movement.
What not to do
- Do not assume it is only stress. A move may explain the timing, but it does not exclude pain or disease.
- Do not force-feed or syringe-feed unless a veterinarian directs you to. Cornell says force-feeding can be ineffective and may worsen food aversion. McDaniel cautions, “We’ve gotten away from the idea of forcing food into a cat’s mouth. That can make a cat’s aversion to food even worse.”
- Do not use a settling aid as treatment for appetite loss. VCA notes that pheromone products are designed to have a calming influence and may help some cats adjust; they do not replace veterinary assessment for a cat that is not eating.
