The location, depth and extent of a tumor shape its signs, treatment options and outlook. A persistent or recurring skin sore, an oral growth, unexplained tooth loss or difficulty eating warrants veterinary assessment; appearance alone cannot confirm SCC.
What is squamous cell carcinoma in cats?
SCC is a cancer of squamous cells that can develop in the skin or oral tissues. The two forms can look very different and are managed differently. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine identifies oral SCC as the most common cancer of the feline mouth.

Oral SCC can invade nearby tissue, including the jaw, and may resemble dental disease. Skin SCC often begins on areas with little hair or pigment. Neither a sore nor a change in eating is enough to diagnose cancer: a veterinarian must assess the cat and, in many cases, examine a tissue sample.
What causes SCC in cats?
Skin SCC: sunlight is an associated risk
Exposure to ultraviolet light is associated with skin SCC, particularly on sparsely haired, lightly pigmented areas. White and light-colored cats and cats that spend time outdoors are described by VCA as more predisposed. A risk factor does not establish why an individual cat developed a tumor.

Oral SCC: proposed links remain unconfirmed
Cornell sources describe possible associations between oral SCC and tobacco smoke, flea-collar chemicals, and some canned foods, particularly tuna-containing foods. These associations have not been statistically confirmed, so they should not be treated as proven causes or grounds for blaming an owner. Cornell veterinary oncologist Margaret McEntee has said of lesions in the mouth, “For lesions that occur there, we suspect that chronic inflammation or chronic dental disease may be related, but we don’t know that for sure.”
A rare, distinct pattern
VCA describes papilloma-like viruses as apparently contributing to multicentric SCC, also called Bowen’s disease or Bowenoid carcinoma, a rare pattern involving multiple lesions. This should not be confused with an established cause of typical oral SCC.

What signs should prompt a veterinary visit?
Skin signs
Skin SCC may start as a small scab or scratch that seems to heal and then returns. Common sites include the temples, ear tips, eyelids, lips and nasal planum. A lesion may become raised, ulcerated, swollen, ooze or erode into deeper tissue. A persistent, recurring or changing sore deserves veterinary attention, especially on a lightly haired or lightly pigmented area.

Oral SCC can cause:
- Drooling or bad breath
- Reduced appetite, difficulty eating or difficulty swallowing
- Weight loss
- Red or swollen gums, or a visible oral growth
- Swelling of the face or jaw
- Loss of an intact tooth without an obvious explanation
These signs can be mistaken for dental disease. Contact a veterinarian promptly about an oral growth, unexplained tooth loss or difficulty eating. If your cat cannot eat or appears significantly painful, contact a veterinarian for individualized triage rather than trying to diagnose the cause at home.

How do veterinarians diagnose and assess SCC?
Diagnosis generally requires sampling cells or tissue and having them examined. Cornell says SCC is confirmed by biopsy. VCA notes that fine-needle aspiration can diagnose some tumors; when the sample is unclear or more characterization is needed, biopsy and histopathology may be used.
After diagnosis, the veterinarian may assess how far the tumor extends locally and whether there is evidence of spread. Tests depend on the site and the individual case; not every cat needs every test. For oral SCC, Cornell describes possible lymph-node sampling and chest X-rays, as well as dental radiographs or CT to assess bone invasion and whether surgery may be feasible. VCA also describes CT as useful for planning oral tumor surgery. These are veterinary staging and planning decisions, not consumer tests.

How is feline SCC treated?
There is no single best treatment for every cat. The options depend on whether the tumor is on the skin or in the mouth, its size and depth, whether bone is involved, whether complete removal is possible, and the expected benefit and burden of treatment. The veterinarian can discuss the cat’s comfort, ability to eat and drink, and quality-of-life goals alongside tumor control.
Options for skin SCC
Surgery may be an option when the lesion can be completely removed. Depending on its location and extent, surgery can involve removing affected tissue from the ear or nose; some toe tumors may require amputation of the affected toe. Cryotherapy or radiation may be considered in selected cases. VCA notes that radiation can be used for some nasal tumors and selected shallow lesions. The appropriate approach depends on the tumor and the cat, not on appearance alone.

Options for oral SCC
Oral SCC is often locally invasive by the time it is found. Surgery may require removing part of the jaw, and imaging can help assess the extent of disease and plan an operation. Cornell notes that many oral lesions are not surgically removable when diagnosed.
When surgery cannot remove the tumor, or as part of a comfort-focused plan, the veterinarian may discuss palliative radiation, pain medication, local nerve blocks or sometimes chemotherapy. Chemotherapy is not a uniformly effective cure: Cornell describes it as a possible adjunct in palliative care, and VCA says its role, including direct injection, remains controversial for skin SCC.
Comfort and supportive care
For oral disease, pain relief and maintaining eating and drinking are important parts of care discussions because mouth tumors can interfere with eating, drinking and grooming. Ask the veterinarian how to monitor comfort and intake and what changes should prompt a call. Do not give human pain medicines unless a veterinarian specifically directs you to do so.
What is the prognosis for a cat with SCC?
Prognosis varies with tumor location, extent and the treatments that are feasible. Cornell reports a typical survival range of 2 to 6 months for cats with oral SCC, while noting that survival can be significantly prolonged in early cases treated with surgery and radiation. This is a source-reported range for oral SCC, not a prediction for an individual cat; a veterinarian familiar with the diagnosis and staging can discuss what it may mean for that patient.
There is no single survival figure here that applies across both skin and oral SCC. Ask the treating veterinarian how the tumor’s site, depth, bone involvement and treatment options affect the outlook and the plan for comfort.
