The small pads beneath the toes are digital pads; the large central pad is the metacarpal pad on a front paw and the metatarsal pad on a hind paw. A separate carpal pad sits higher on the back of each front leg, near the wrist. Together, these structures cushion impact, support traction and balance, and provide contact with the ground. Cats also sweat through their feet, but paw sweating plays only a limited role in cooling.

What paw pads are made of
Paw pads are specialized, thick-skinned structures over cushioning tissue. Their outer surface is keratinized skin, with fatty and connective tissue, including collagen, beneath it. This layered construction helps protect the foot from environmental contact, supports movement, and absorbs shock, as described by Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences and The International Cat Association.

How pads help cats move and sense surfaces
Cushioning and shock absorption
The pads compress under a cat’s weight and cushion steps, helping soften impact on the feet and the structures above them. This is useful during walking, running, and pouncing. Pads can contribute to quiet movement, but they do not make a landing inherently safe or prevent injuries from falls.
Traction, balance, and terrain protection
Contact between the pads and the ground helps cats grip surfaces and maintain balance across varied terrain. Their thick outer layer also helps protect the foot on rough or uneven ground. Scent marking
Secretions from the paws can contribute to scent marking and may improve traction. This is a supporting function, not the main purpose of the pads.
Do cats sweat through their paws?
Yes. Cats have sweat glands on their feet, and sweating there can help release some heat. Merck Veterinary Manual describes this contribution as minor; excited cats may leave damp paw prints. Paw sweating is real, but it is not cats’ main cooling mechanism. Texas A&M likewise notes that cats have limited ability to sweat and rely on other routes for most temperature regulation.

When a paw pad needs veterinary attention
Licking at a foot or limping after an outing can signal a torn, punctured, or burned pad. Contact a veterinarian promptly if you see discoloration, exposed tissue, a severe burn, or bleeding that does not stop within 10–15 minutes.
