The veterinarian needs to understand what the dog does, who is responsible for the team, and whether illness, treatment, clinic stress, or recovery could affect the dog’s safety or ability to work. The handler is an essential source of that context and a partner in care.
This article draws on the 2021 American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) Working, Assistance, and Therapy Dog Guidelines. AAHA explicitly describes them as guidance, not a standard of care; decisions should be tailored to the individual dog and coordinated with its veterinarian and responsible handler or organization.

What counts as a working dog?
In its 2021 guidelines, AAHA discusses dogs trained for protection, scent detection, service functions, emotional support, and therapeutic intervention. These roles differ in purpose, working environment, and relationship with a handler. Terminology is not used consistently everywhere, so it is helpful to describe the dog’s actual task rather than rely only on a label.

Protection dogs
Protection dogs alert handlers to potential threats from people or animals and may deter them. They include police, patrol, law-enforcement, military, and private-security dogs, as well as livestock guardian dogs. A dog trained for both protection and detection is often called dual-purpose.

Detection dogs
AAHA defines a detection dog as “a canine trained to detect and alert to the presence of certain scents or odors for which it has been trained.” Detection work can involve explosives, narcotics, people who are alive or deceased, contraband, weapons, ignitable liquids, invasive or endangered species, medical conditions, or tracking. The target odor, working method, and sector may all be used to describe the dog’s role.
Assistance and therapy dogs
Assistance dogs perform tasks for their handler, such as guiding a person, responding to sounds, or supporting mobility. Therapy dogs, by contrast, participate in animal-assisted activities or goal-directed therapy to benefit people other than their handler, often in professional or community settings. Emotional support, service, assistance, and therapy are not interchangeable terms; the work the dog actually performs is the most useful starting point for a care conversation.

How should a veterinary team handle a working dog?
Start with the job and the team, then plan the visit around the dog’s needs. AAHA recommends working with the person responsible for the dog or its sponsoring organization, because a treatment decision may affect training, performance, safety, or a return-to-work plan.

Learn the dog’s role before choosing a plan
- Ask what tasks the dog performs, where it works, and what skills or body systems are essential to that work.
- Ask how the handler and dog work together and whether an organization or unit is responsible for the dog.
- Discuss whether a proposed test, treatment, medication, recovery period, or restriction could affect the dog’s work.
- Coordinate practical decisions with the handler or responsible organization while keeping the dog’s medical needs at the center.
Reduce avoidable stress in the clinic
A calmer visit can support both safety and examination. AAHA recommends low-stress handling, positive reinforcement, breaks when needed, and appropriate use of anxiolytics. Clinics may reduce exposure to a busy waiting area by bringing the team directly to an available exam room or asking them to wait in a vehicle until one is ready. Appointment timing and waiting arrangements should fit the individual team.
Avoid separating the dog from its handler unless separation is necessary. If separation or sedation is being considered, discuss it with the handler; the dog’s working relationship and response to the situation can inform the plan.

Communicate recovery and work restrictions
Care can affect not only the dog but also its handler and sponsoring unit. Clear, timely communication helps them plan around treatment and recovery. When useful, provide written follow-up that explains expected recovery and the veterinarian’s guidance about returning to work.
How can veterinary care affect a detection dog’s work?
Detection work depends on the dog’s ability to smell and respond to trained odors. AAHA notes that illness and treatment may affect olfaction, so the veterinarian should discuss possible performance effects with the handler when making a plan.

The guidelines mention metronidazole and systemic steroids as examples of treatments to consider in this context. Those examples are not blanket instructions to avoid or select a medication: the veterinarian must weigh the dog’s condition, treatment needs, and reasonable alternatives. If the dog’s work depends on scent detection, include the handler in a discussion of the possible effect on performance and the plan for resuming duties.
What should handlers tell the veterinarian?
Handlers can help the veterinary team make a plan that is medically sound and practical for the working team. Share the information that clarifies the dog’s job, responsibilities, and needs during the visit.
- The dog’s specific tasks, working environment, and any dual-purpose role.
- The handler’s role and the organization or unit responsible for the dog, if applicable.
- Skills or functions central to the work, such as scent detection, mobility assistance, or threat alerting.
- Any concern that illness, medication, a procedure, clinic separation, sedation, or recovery could affect performance or safety.
- Relevant training or operational requirements that may influence the timing of follow-up or return to work.
For operational detection programs, a 2006 Office of Justice Programs summary of SWGDOG material discusses initial training, team certification, maintenance training, and records of training, proficiency assessments, seizures, and deployment or use. It is historical program guidance, not evidence of a current, universal certification schedule or requirement.

What the AAHA guidelines are—and are not
The AAHA document is veterinary guidance for a broad range of working, assistance, and therapy dogs, not a single protocol for every role or patient. AAHA states: “This document is intended as a guideline only, not an AAHA standard of care.” The guidelines were issued in 2021, so they should be understood as that edition of AAHA guidance rather than as newly published rules.
