The best-supported answer to “What are the five cat personality types?” is the Feline Five: Neuroticism, Extraversion, Dominance, Impulsiveness, and Agreeableness. They are personality dimensions, not five fixed boxes. A cat can show more or less of each tendency, and the same cat may behave differently depending on its surroundings and experiences.
What are the five cat personality types?
The Feline Five model comes from a 2017 study by Litchfield and colleagues. The researchers analyzed owner ratings of 2,802 pet cats in South Australia and New Zealand across 52 personality traits, identifying five broad factors. The names describe patterns in those ratings; they are not clinical diagnoses or a test that can determine what a cat will do.

| Dimension | What it describes | What you might notice |
|---|---|---|
| Neuroticism | Anxious, fearful, suspicious, or shy tendencies | A cat may be wary of unfamiliar people or situations, or seek a place to hide. |
| Extraversion | Activity, vigilance, curiosity, inquisitiveness, inventiveness, and alertness | A cat may explore, investigate new objects, or seek opportunities for play. |
| Dominance | Bullying or aggression toward other cats | Pay attention to how the cat behaves around other cats; the dimension is not a measure of how it treats people. |
| Impulsiveness | Erratic or reckless behavior | Behavior may seem less predictable or more spontaneous. |
| Agreeableness | Affection, friendliness toward people, and gentleness | A cat may welcome human contact, though individual preferences still matter. |
These descriptions are useful for noticing patterns, not assigning a permanent label. A cat may be outgoing with familiar people but cautious in a new place, for example. The 2022 ISFM/AAFP Cat Friendly Veterinary Environment Guidelines describe cats as socially flexible, with variation in how sociable individuals are toward other cats, people, and other species.
Are these the only recognized cat personality groupings?
No single five-type taxonomy is established as universal veterinary practice. The Feline Five is a research model based on owner ratings. Separately, the American Association of Feline Practitioners’ behavior guideline uses four loose practical groupings:
#1 Best Overall
- The bold, active cat
- The easy-going, affable, social but non-pushy cat
- The withdrawn, shy, timid, fearful cat
- The assertive cat
The four groupings are not another version of the five dimensions, and they should not be combined into one classification. Both approaches can prompt useful observations, but neither means every cat in a group will act alike.
How can you understand your cat’s tendencies?
Look for recurring behavior across ordinary situations rather than relying on one incident or an online label. Notice how your cat responds to unfamiliar people and changes, how much it explores and plays, how it interacts with other cats, whether its behavior is steady or erratic, and how it approaches affection or human contact. These are descriptive observations, not a validated at-home diagnostic scale.
- Record what happened, where it happened, and who was present.
- Compare behavior in familiar, low-pressure settings with behavior around new people or changes.
- Give the cat a choice about whether to approach, play, or retreat; do not force contact to test a trait.
- Look for patterns over time, while considering environmental changes and the cat’s individual preferences.
A personality dimension cannot by itself explain why a particular behavior occurs. A cat that hides may be responding to its surroundings, while one that seems irritable could have another reason for its behavior.
What can you do to support different tendencies?
For a cat that seems shy or fearful
Offer a quiet area and places to hide, and let the cat control when it comes out or approaches. The Feline Five study discusses additional hiding places and quiet areas for cats with higher neuroticism scores. Observe whether particular social interactions or features of the environment appear stressful.
For a curious or active cat
Try interactive play, sensory variety, or food-based enrichment, then follow the individual cat’s interest. Merck Veterinary Manual guidance mentions wand-type toys and play; AAFP/ISFM environmental-needs guidance also discusses toys, play-based interaction, and feeding devices that let cats actively acquire food. An interactive wand toy or puzzle feeder is an optional way to offer those activities, not a guaranteed favorite or a treatment.
For a social cat
Let the cat’s signals determine whether contact continues. Keep interactions positive and predictable, and allow the cat to leave. In a 2017 preference study, human social interaction was the most-preferred stimulus category for a majority of the cats in that sample, but preferences varied between individual cats.
Rank #4
For a household with more than one cat
Observe how the cats interact and make sure they have appropriate resources and places to retreat. A personality label alone cannot establish whether two cats are compatible.
Avoid punishment as a way to shape behavior. Merck Veterinary Manual says: “Positive punishment (eg, scold, spank, squirt bottle) should be avoided, because it can damage the human-cat bond and trigger aggression.”

Can a cat’s personality change?
Behavior can vary with context, and a label should not be treated as a lifetime prediction. A new or marked change in activity, friendliness, irritability, or social behavior can be associated with a medical problem. The Feline Five study notes that stress may relate to high impulsiveness and that irritability can sometimes reflect pain or illness; these are possibilities to assess, not diagnoses an owner can make from a personality score. Seek veterinary assessment for a concerning or persistent change rather than dismissing it as “just personality.”
Does personality matter when adopting a cat?
It can help you assess fit, especially when you can observe an adult cat’s behavior in context. Cornell’s Feline Health Center says an adult cat’s personality is already established, which can give prospective adopters a clearer idea of how that cat may fit their household. That is an advantage for making an informed choice, not a guarantee that behavior will never change. Cornell also describes kittens as generally more curious, playful, and energetic.
