Pica in cats is persistent chewing or eating of non-food items such as fabric, plastic, paper, or string. It can have medical or behavioral causes, and swallowed material may injure the mouth or block the digestive tract. If your cat repeatedly targets non-food objects, contact a veterinarian rather than assuming the cause is boredom or a dietary deficiency; keep dangerous items out of reach while you arrange care.

What pica means in cats

Pica describes persistent chewing or consumption of materials that have no nutritional value. A cat may suck or chew an item without swallowing it, or eat part or all of it. The behavior alone does not identify why it is happening.

Even a non-toxic object can be dangerous if it is swallowed: it may become lodged in the esophagus, stomach, or intestines. Sharp objects can injure the digestive tract, and chewing can also cause dental or mouth injuries.

Why a cat may eat non-food items

Possible causes include medical problems and behavioral factors. A veterinarian should assess the cat before the behavior is attributed to boredom, anxiety, or a particular nutrient deficiency.

Medical possibilities

Potential medical contributors include gastrointestinal disease, anemia, nutritional insufficiency, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, and neurologic or other systemic disease. These possibilities cannot be distinguished from behavior alone.

Behavioral possibilities

Stress or anxiety, boredom or inadequate stimulation, early weaning, and compulsive behavior may contribute. Compulsive disorder is considered only after medical causes have been ruled out. Some sources describe increased wool-sucking or pica in certain breeds, but breed is not a diagnosis.

Symptoms and when to contact a veterinarian urgently

Repeated sucking, chewing, or eating of non-food items is the central sign. Depending on the material swallowed and any underlying condition, a cat may also vomit, eat less, have diarrhea or constipation, strain to pass stool, seem lethargic, or become weak.

A swallowed object can obstruct the digestive tract, and serious complications can be life-threatening. Contact a veterinarian promptly if your cat has swallowed string, a sharp object, or something potentially toxic, or develops vomiting, loss of appetite, inability to pass stool, marked lethargy, or weakness. Do not induce vomiting or pull on string protruding from your cat’s mouth or rear; seek veterinary instructions instead.

How a veterinarian evaluates pica

The veterinarian will ask what your cat chews or eats, how often it happens, what the cat eats as its regular diet, what has changed in its environment, and whether there are other symptoms. The examination and history help guide whether testing is needed. There is no single test that diagnoses pica itself.

Depending on the suspected cause, evaluation may include blood, urine, or fecal testing. If obstruction or gastrointestinal disease is a concern, the veterinarian may consider imaging such as radiographs, contrast studies, or ultrasound; more advanced investigation may be appropriate in selected cases.

Treatment and preventing further episodes

Care depends on the cause and any injury or obstruction. A medical problem or dietary imbalance calls for veterinary-directed treatment. An obstruction or dental injury may require a procedure or surgery. If medical causes are excluded, a veterinarian may recommend behavior changes, a diet or feeding-pattern adjustment, medication, or referral to a veterinary behaviorist, depending on the individual cat.

Make the home safer

  • Store string, thread, fabric, plastic, and other items your cat targets where the cat cannot reach them.
  • Supervise access to rooms or objects that cannot be secured when necessary.
  • Use complete and balanced nutrition, while avoiding supplements or diet changes unless your veterinarian advises them.

Offer suitable activity when appropriate

If behavior management is part of the plan, provide appropriate play and enrichment, such as prey-like toys, scratching posts, hiding spaces, or an interactive puzzle feeder suited to your cat. These are optional environmental tools, not treatments or guarantees against recurrence. Use positive reinforcement and avoid punishment, which can increase anxiety.
