Teach an emergency stop by pairing a clear hand signal and spoken cue with a rewarded stop, then gradually practising at greater distances and around distractions. Reward your dog where it stops so it learns to stay put while you approach. This is useful safety training, not a guarantee that a dog will stop in every emergency.
Why teach an emergency stop?
A reliable stop cue may help interrupt a dog running toward a reactive dog, moving toward a road, or becoming overstimulated. Battersea describes these as possible uses, not outcomes the cue can guarantee. The aim is to give you another trained response to use while keeping practice controlled.

Choose a cue and reward
Pick a short spoken cue your dog does not hear in everyday conversation, such as “stop,” and pair it with a consistent raised-hand signal. Use food your dog finds motivating; there is no required treat brand or recipe. Keep rewards readily available so you can reinforce the response promptly.

Teach the stop in short stages
1. Make the hand signal predict a stop
- Start with your dog a short distance away in a quiet, controlled place.
- Encourage your dog to move toward you. Raise a treat above your head, then toss it behind your dog before it reaches you.
- Repeat until the raised hand prompts your dog to slow down or stop and turn back for the treat.
2. Add the spoken cue
Repeat the game, saying “stop” as you raise your hand and toss the treat behind your dog. Practise until your dog responds to both the hand signal and the word.
3. Reward your dog at the stopping place
Once your dog stops, walk over and give the reward there. This teaches your dog to remain in position while you approach, rather than expecting every reward to be thrown behind it.

4. Increase distance gradually
Call your dog toward you from a little farther away, then give the hand signal and spoken cue. Walk to your dog and reward the stop. Increase the distance in small steps, returning to an easier distance if your dog does not respond.
5. Add locations and distractions carefully
Practise in different places, introducing distractions one at a time. For example, ask a helper to walk past at a distance your dog can manage. Battersea suggests using a long line when practising in an unfamiliar environment so you can maintain physical management while your dog moves.

Use a long line safely
A long line gives your dog room to move during training while keeping you connected. The Veterinary Office of the Canton of Zurich recommends attaching it to a well-fitting harness to protect the neck. Handling a line by hand can cause injury if a fast, powerful dog hits the end of it; get expert instruction before using one if you are unsure how to manage it.
Dogs Trust gives similar management advice for recall: begin in enclosed spaces, increase distance and distractions gradually, and keep off-lead practice to secure areas until recall is reliable. If your dog ignores recall, stay calm and gently guide with the line rather than pulling the dog toward you, or collect your dog. These are recall recommendations, but the same principle matters during stop training: practise where you can manage the situation.

What to do if your dog does not stop
- Do not assume the cue is ready for a more difficult setting. Reduce the distance or distraction and practise successfully there first.
- Use the line and a secure area to manage the dog rather than relying on the cue to prevent a dangerous run.
- Reward the response you want when your dog stops, and keep training sessions manageable.
- If you are not seeing progress or need help handling the line, seek support from a qualified trainer or behaviourist.
When is the stop ready for real-world use?
There is no published reliability threshold in Battersea’s guidance that establishes when a dog can safely be trusted to stop off lead in every setting. A response that works at home may not transfer immediately to a new place or a high-distraction moment. Keep building the behaviour gradually and use appropriate physical management; an emergency stop should be an extra safety skill, not a substitute for secure handling.
