A bad smell from your cat’s poop can happen with diarrhea, but odor alone cannot identify the cause. A brief bout may follow a sudden food change or a stressful event; persistent or recurring diarrhea can have many other explanations, including parasites, infection, food-related problems, or disease. Watch the stool and your cat’s overall condition, and contact a veterinarian when symptoms persist or warning signs appear.
Why a cat’s poop can smell unusually bad
Foul odor is a clue to notice, not a diagnosis. Cornell Feline Health Center notes that diarrhea can be foul-smelling, while the possible causes range from temporary changes to illness that needs veterinary assessment. The eight categories below are possibilities associated with abnormal stool or diarrhea; none can be confirmed by smell alone.

1. Sudden diet change
Changing foods abruptly can cause diarrhea for a few days, according to the Cornell Feline Health Center. That may coincide with stronger-smelling stool, but a recent food change does not prove it is the reason for the odor.

Food intolerance and food allergy are among the causes of feline diarrhea listed by VCA Animal Hospitals. A smell or a single episode of loose stool is not enough to establish either condition.

3. Intestinal parasites
Worms and other intestinal parasites can cause nonspecific signs, including diarrhea, and some infected cats may show no obvious signs. Diagnosis and appropriate treatment require veterinary guidance; Cornell describes parasite testing and veterinarian-prescribed treatment in its overview of gastrointestinal parasites in cats.
4. Giardia or another protozoan
Giardia may be associated with soft, poorly formed, pale, foul-smelling stool, sometimes with mucus or a fatty appearance. These signs are not unique to Giardia. The Merck Veterinary Manual notes that Giardia cysts are shed intermittently, so more than one fecal test may be needed.

5. Bacterial or viral infection
Bacterial, viral, and other infectious causes can lead to diarrhea, VCA explains. A veterinarian may need to evaluate the cat and test a stool sample to narrow down the cause.

6. Stress-related diarrhea
A stressful event can coincide with a short episode of diarrhea, according to Cornell. If the stool change continues, returns, or comes with other symptoms, do not assume stress is the explanation.

7. Intestinal inflammation or chronic gastrointestinal disease
Inflammatory bowel disease is one possible underlying cause of diarrhea. Recurrent or prolonged diarrhea can also be associated with inflammatory, infectious, or neoplastic disease, Cornell and VCA note. These conditions cannot be distinguished by stool odor.
8. Problems with digestion or absorption, or disease elsewhere
Several gastrointestinal disorders can affect stool, and persistent or recurring diarrhea may also accompany disease outside the gut. Cornell lists possible broader associations including thyroid, kidney, liver, neurologic, immune, and neoplastic conditions. A veterinary assessment is needed to determine which possibilities, if any, apply to your cat.

When to call a veterinarian
Use the duration of the stool change and your cat’s overall health—not smell by itself—to judge urgency. Contact a veterinarian for guidance if frequent liquid or semi-liquid stool lasts more than two days. Cornell advises seeking care as soon as possible when diarrhea lasts longer than a day or two and the cat also has poor appetite, lethargy, or vomiting.

Seek prompt veterinary attention for severe or bloody diarrhea, or if diarrhea is accompanied by weakness, fever, vomiting, abdominal pain, dehydration, appetite loss, or weight loss. These signs call for more than home monitoring.

What to note before the appointment
VCA says a cat’s history and stool characteristics help guide evaluation. Write down:
- When the odor and stool change began, and how often your cat is passing stool.
- What the stool looks like, including whether it is liquid, soft, pale, bloody, or contains mucus.
- Any recent food change or possible exposure to something unusual.
- Other signs, such as vomiting, reduced appetite, low energy, pain, or weight loss.
Your clinic may ask you to bring a fresh fecal sample. If requested, collect it in a clean, leakproof container and follow the clinic’s instructions for handling and delivery. A container is only for transporting a sample; it cannot diagnose or treat the cause at home. Giardia may require repeated stool testing because cysts are shed intermittently.
What not to give your cat
Do not give human or over-the-counter medicine unless a veterinarian specifically directs you to. Cornell warns that some over-the-counter medications can harm cats. Parasite treatments should also be selected with veterinary guidance rather than given on the assumption that odor means worms or Giardia.
