1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoose the arrangement your cat can handle and the caregiver can deliver reliably. A cat that struggles with travel or change may be more comfortable at home with a dependable sitter; boarding may suit a cat that copes with new surroundings and needs more consistent staff presence. Neither option is automatically best: compare your cat’s needs with the actual sitter and facility available.
What matters most in the decision?
Start with your cat, not a general rule about cats. Staying home lets a cat keep familiar surroundings and much of its usual routine, and avoids sharing a facility with unfamiliar animals. That can be a meaningful advantage for a cat that hides, panics, or becomes hard to handle during travel or environmental changes. Cats Protection’s holiday-care guidance and Petco’s comparison of sitter and kennel care discuss keeping cats at home while their owners are away.

Boarding changes the cat’s environment and routine. UC Davis notes that separation, changes to routine or diet, and loss of familiar comforts may contribute to stress. But a well-run facility can provide dependable supervision and interaction, and may be a better fit when scheduled home visits would not meet the cat’s needs. The quality of the specific care matters more than the category alone.

Compare the options against your cat’s needs
| Question | In-home sitter | Boarding facility |
|---|---|---|
| How does your cat handle change and travel? | May suit a cat that is unsettled by travel or unfamiliar places. | May suit a cat that has handled new surroundings reasonably well; assess how it responded to any previous stays. |
| How much contact and monitoring does your cat need? | Confirm visit frequency or whether the sitter will stay overnight; scheduled visits may not provide continuous supervision. | Ask what staff presence, interaction, and monitoring look like in practice. |
| Can the caregiver meet health and medication needs? | Verify that the sitter can follow the feeding and medication schedule and notice changes in behavior or health. | Ask how staff give medication, monitor cats, and access veterinary help. For complex medical care, ask your veterinarian whether boarding with veterinary support or another arrangement is appropriate. |
| Can you trust the provider and the contingency plan? | Check experience and references, and decide whether you are comfortable giving the sitter access to your home. | Visit and assess the facility, staff, housing, hygiene, and emergency procedures. |
| Do the practical details work? | Consider home access, visit schedule, location, and availability. | Consider transport, location, availability, and the facility’s current requirements. |

When an in-home sitter may be the better fit
Consider a sitter if your cat is strongly attached to familiar surroundings, has a poor response to travel or new environments, or does best when its daily routine changes as little as possible. The sitter still needs to provide enough attention and observation for this particular cat; simply remaining at home is not enough if the visit schedule fails to meet its needs.
Questions to ask a sitter
- How often will you visit, and for how long? Will you stay in the home?
- How will you handle feeding, fresh water, litter, play, and any medication?
- What will you do if the cat hides, refuses food, or is difficult to handle?
- How will you send updates, and whom will you contact if the cat seems unwell?
- Can you describe your cat-care experience and provide references?
Share the veterinarian’s contact information, an emergency contact, written care instructions, and the location of the cat carrier. Cats Protection’s holiday-care guidance includes these details among the practical information to leave for a sitter.

When boarding may be the better fit
Boarding may work when your cat can cope with a new environment and would benefit from more consistent staff presence or observation than a sitter’s visits can provide. A facility’s actual standards and staffing matter: a new setting is not automatically stressful for every cat, but poor conditions or inadequate care can create avoidable problems.

- Visit in person. Check cleanliness, ventilation, housing, noise, and whether cats are appropriately separated.
- Ask about staff experience, daily monitoring, enrichment, and what staff do when a cat shows signs of stress or illness.
- Confirm vaccination and health requirements, cleaning practices, and how the facility manages disease risks.
- Ask whether veterinary support is available, how emergencies are handled, and how promptly you would be contacted.
- Confirm how staff handle feeding and medication, and provide clear written directions for any special needs.
UC Davis’s boarding-facility guidance recommends assessing a facility before booking. It also advises bringing the cat’s usual food and familiar toys or bedding if the facility allows them, and carrying medication in its original packaging with written dosing directions. Follow the facility’s current instructions and ask your veterinarian about health or vaccine requirements. The American Animal Hospital Association’s boarding-preparation advice also emphasizes planning ahead and sharing relevant care information.

- Behavior and handling notes, including hiding places, signs of distress, and what is unusual for your cat.

Check local boarding rules
Licensing and animal-welfare requirements depend on location. England’s GOV.UK statutory guidance for cat boarding sets expectations for local authorities, including suitable housing, food and water, enrichment, behavior monitoring, humane handling, and disease control. It is England-specific guidance, not a worldwide rule. Elsewhere, check the requirements that apply in your area.
