Good cat sitting means following the cat’s normal routine, not improvising a new one. Before the owner leaves, agree on visits, write down care instructions, and make sure you know whom to call if anything changes. These 11 steps help a temporary caregiver keep a cat comfortable and respond sensibly to problems.

1. Meet the cat and confirm the care plan

Arrange a meeting before the owner leaves. This gives the cat a chance to encounter you while the owner is present and lets both of you check that the care is manageable. Ask about the cat’s temperament, health needs, and anything that might make visits challenging. Cats Protection recommends meeting care providers in advance and weighing a cat’s needs when choosing care (Cats Protection: Cat holiday care).

2. Get the routine in writing

Ask the owner to write down the details rather than relying on memory or informal instructions. Cats Protection’s Cat Sitter Checklist (2025) covers key handover information, including food, outdoor access, litter, companionship, medication, emergency contacts, and the owner’s return.

  • Food type, portion, feeding times, and where supplies are stored.
  • Water and food-bowl locations.
  • Where the cat usually hides or sleeps.
  • Whether outdoor access is allowed, and any limits or timings.
  • Litter-tray location, spare litter, and waste-disposal instructions.

Follow the owner’s established plan. If an instruction is unclear, ask before changing the routine.

  • 【Ensure smooth feeding】- We have designed a food swinging device in the food dispenser to ensure that food can be smoothly placed into the feeding bowl from getting stuck. 3. Agree on visits, duration, and updates

Confirm the visit schedule, how long you should stay, and how the owner wants updates shared. Agree on the owner’s expected return and what to do if travel plans change. Visit timing and duration should suit the cat’s needs and the agreed care plan; don’t assume that a quick stop is enough.

4. Keep fresh water available

Replace the cat’s water daily and make sure it can reach the bowl. ASPCA general cat-care guidance recommends providing fresh, clean water and washing and refilling bowls daily (ASPCA: General Cat Care).

5. Maintain the litter arrangement

Keep the tray in its usual place, use the litter the owner provides, and follow the owner’s disposal instructions. Remove waste daily: Cats Protection’s sitter checklist calls for daily waste removal, and ASPCA guidance says to scoop solid waste at least once a day (Cats Protection checklist; ASPCA: General Cat Care).

6. Follow the cat’s outdoor-access rules exactly

Confirm whether the cat must stay indoors, may go outside at particular times, or uses a cat flap. Never let a cat out—or shut one in—because you assume that is what cats usually do. The owner’s established instructions and any relevant veterinary advice should guide your decisions. ASPCA’s general cat-care advice favors keeping cats indoors, but that general recommendation does not tell you what this particular owner has arranged (ASPCA: General Cat Care).

  • Precise Portion control:1 Portion ≈ 10 Grams ≈ 1/12 Cup. Allowed kibble size less than 0.5 inch. Up to 6 meals a day. The portion means the kibble amount of each bowl

7. Let the cat choose the level of interaction

Ask whether the cat likes play and attention or needs quiet and space. An outgoing cat may welcome a play session; a shy cat may prefer you to sit calmly nearby—or may remain hidden. Don’t pull a cat out of a hiding place or force contact. Cats Protection’s checklist prompts owners to describe companionship preferences and notes that shy cats may hide (Cats Protection checklist).

8. Use familiar comforts without making new purchases

A familiar T-shirt or blanket carrying the owner’s scent may help make the cat’s surroundings feel reassuring. Cats Protection also mentions a plug-in pheromone diffuser as an optional aid, not a requirement or a guaranteed treatment (Cats Protection: Cat holiday care). Use what the owner has chosen and avoid introducing unfamiliar items without checking first.

9. Give medication only as directed

Before accepting a medication-dependent assignment, make sure you can administer the medicine safely. Ask the owner to write down the medication name, dose, timing, and frequency, and demonstrate the method if needed. Do not give unprescribed medicine or change a dose. If you are unsure, contact the owner or the veterinary team rather than guessing. ASPCA guidance emphasizes following veterinary directions for medication (ASPCA: General Cat Care).

10. Know whom to contact and when to escalate

Keep the owner’s contact details and itinerary, a trusted backup person, the regular veterinarian’s number, and the nearest emergency clinic address and phone number where you can find them quickly. Ask who is authorized to approve veterinary care if the owner cannot be reached. ASPCA recommends sharing absence plans with the veterinarian and identifying who can make decisions for the pet (ASPCA: Emergency Care for Your Pet; ASPCA: Pet Sitter Safety).

Contact the owner promptly if the cat is missing, seems unwell, or behaves in a way that is unusual for it. Unusual or excessive meowing can have medical causes, so do not dismiss a major change as attention-seeking (ASPCA: Meowing and Yowling).

Seek urgent veterinary advice for serious warning signs such as pale gums, rapid breathing, weakness, difficulty standing, apparent paralysis, unconsciousness, seizures, or excessive bleeding. Follow the agreed transport plan and the veterinary team’s instructions; do not attempt treatment beyond your training. If poisoning is suspected, contact a veterinarian or, in the United States, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at 888-426-4435. That number is US-specific (ASPCA: Emergency Care for Your Pet).

11. Choose care that fits this cat

For some cats, staying at home with a sitter is the least stressful option because the surroundings are familiar. Others may be better suited to a cattery. Consider the individual cat’s temperament and medical needs, how often and how long a sitter can visit, medication capability, and the provider’s emergency plan. Cats Protection notes that home care is often less stressful, especially for nervous cats, while recognizing that a cattery may suit some cats (Cats Protection: Cat holiday care).

If you’re arranging home visits

  • Ask about visit timing and duration, references or reviews, and experience with the cat’s care needs.
  • Check that the sitter is comfortable administering any required medication and knows what to do if the cat is ill or missing.
  • Make sure a meet-and-greet is possible and the owner’s instructions are clear.

If you’re considering a cattery

  • Visit in advance and check cleanliness and general safety.
  • Ask about licensing where applicable, how cats are separated to reduce stress and disease transmission, and how escapes are prevented.
  • Discuss medication, emergency procedures, and whether the setting suits this cat.

Whichever arrangement you choose, the handoff should cover the cat’s age, weight, health issues, diet, medication, microchip information, usual veterinarian, emergency clinic, backup contact, and the owner’s expected return. Owners can use the Cats Protection checklist to record practical details for a sitter.
