Cats can look as if they are smiling, but the shape of the mouth alone does not show that a cat is happy. A relaxed body, soft eyes, an upright tail, and your cat’s usual behavior are more useful clues—especially when you read them together and in context.
Can cats smile?
Not in the human sense: cats do not use a smile-like mouth to communicate happiness. A cat’s resting mouth can simply appear upturned. If a cat holds its mouth open after sniffing something, that may be the Flehmen response, which helps it process scents rather than express delight. 1. A relaxed body and smooth coat
A comfortable cat tends to hold its body loosely. Tension, a tightly hunched posture, or puffed fur calls for a closer look at the context rather than an assumption that the cat is relaxed. 2. Soft eyes and slow blinks
Partly closed, relaxed eyes and slow blinking can accompany comfort. Read them alongside the cat’s posture and surroundings; eye movement by itself is not a happiness test. Cats Protection and Virginia Tech Veterinary Teaching Hospital include soft eyes and slow blinks among the signals to consider.
3. An upright tail
A tail held upright, sometimes with a curl at the tip, can accompany a relaxed or confident greeting. Its meaning still depends on the rest of the cat’s body language and what is happening around it.

4. Relaxed ears and whiskers
Forward or otherwise relaxed ears and loose whiskers can support the impression that a cat is at ease. Consider them with the eyes, tail, and overall posture rather than treating any one feature as decisive. PetMD’s overview describes these facial and body cues.
5. Familiar, everyday behavior
Notice whether your cat is behaving normally for them: eating and drinking, grooming, using the litter box appropriately, playing, and interacting as usual. These routines help put a momentary expression or gesture in context. A change from your cat’s ordinary pattern is worth noticing; a list of positive behaviors is not a diagnostic score.

Does purring mean a cat is happy?
Not necessarily. Cats may purr when content, but purring can also occur in stressful situations or when a cat is in pain. The RSPCA notes that purring without relaxed body language may indicate stress, while Cats Protection’s body-language guidance also cautions against reading the sound on its own. Consider posture, the setting, and what is normal for your cat.
How to read your cat’s signals together
Look for a pattern across several clues: a loose body, soft eyes, relaxed ears and whiskers, and a tail held upright can fit with a comfortable greeting. Then check whether the cat’s behavior makes sense for that setting and matches its usual routine. If signals conflict—for example, purring alongside a tense posture—do not let the purr override the rest of what you see.

Enrichment can be part of supporting a cat’s well-being. Interactive play is one possible activity, but what engages one cat may not engage another. Observe whether your cat chooses to participate and seems comfortable; a toy or activity is not proof of happiness by itself. PetMD’s guide discusses enrichment as one way to support feline happiness.
