Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →A bee or wasp sting can cause anything from a painful patch of swelling to a rapidly life-threatening allergic reaction in a cat. If your cat has trouble breathing, pants, develops marked head or neck swelling, hives, vomiting, diarrhea, collapse, or other whole-body symptoms, leave for an emergency veterinary clinic immediately. For a single, mild, local reaction, remove a visible bee stinger, apply a wrapped cold pack for about 10 minutes, and watch your cat closely while contacting a veterinarian for advice.
What to do in the first few minutes
Move your cat away from the insect and any active swarm before examining the sting. Do not approach a swarm if doing so puts you at risk; call for help and arrange emergency veterinary care. A frightened or painful cat may bite or scratch, so handle gently and keep the face away from your hands. If you cannot safely identify the site, your cat is extremely distressed, or more than one sting may have occurred, phone a veterinarian for immediate direction.

- Check for a bee stinger. A honeybee may leave a stinger embedded in the skin. Slide the edge of a credit card across the surface to scrape it out. Do not pull it with tweezers, which can squeeze the venom sac and force more venom into the tissue. VCA’s cat-specific guidance says wasps and hornets do not leave stingers.
- Cool a small, local reaction. If your cat is otherwise acting normally and the swelling is limited to the sting site, place an ice pack or a bag of frozen peas inside a cloth and hold it against the area for about 10 minutes. Stop if your cat becomes more upset or the skin becomes uncomfortably cold.
- Prevent further licking or scratching. A protective collar can help if your cat keeps traumatizing the spot. It does not neutralize venom and does not treat an allergic reaction.
- Call before giving medicine. Ask a veterinarian whether an antihistamine is appropriate and what product and dose are safe for your cat. Do not select or calculate diphenhydramine (Benadryl) or another antihistamine on your own.
- Continue observation. Reactions can worsen after the initial sting, and delayed signs are possible. Keep your cat quiet and within sight for the next several hours, with transport ready if symptoms change.
How to judge the urgency
The table below separates a limited skin reaction from signs that need veterinary care without delay. When in doubt, call a veterinary professional rather than waiting for a symptom to become severe.

| What you see | What it may mean | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Small, localized pain or swelling only; normal breathing and behavior | Limited local reaction | Remove a visible bee stinger, use a wrapped cold pack for about 10 minutes, and monitor closely while contacting your veterinarian for advice. |
| Swelling of the face, muzzle, head, or neck; hives; intense restlessness or agitation | Possible systemic allergic reaction | Go to an emergency veterinary clinic at once. Swelling near the airway can progress quickly. |
| Panting or any breathing difficulty; excessive drooling; vomiting or diarrhea; weakness, dizziness, disorientation, collapse, or seizures | Severe allergic reaction or anaphylaxis | Transport immediately. Do not delay to try home medication or further first aid. |
| Sting inside the mouth or multiple stings | High risk of airway swelling or toxic effects from venom | Seek prompt emergency veterinary direction and be prepared to travel immediately, even if signs initially look mild. |
Emergency symptoms to recognize
Breathing changes
Panting is not normal for a relaxed cat. VCA’s emergency guidance specifically states that if a cat starts to pant, you should call your veterinarian. Labored, noisy, rapid, or open-mouth breathing is an emergency. Do not wait to see whether a cold pack reduces the swelling.

Face, mouth, or neck swelling
Facial or muzzle swelling can be an early sign of anaphylaxis. A sting in the mouth is especially dangerous because swelling can narrow the airway. Severe swelling around the head or neck warrants immediate transport, even if your cat has not yet developed breathing difficulty.
Whole-body signs
Hives, heavy drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, marked agitation, weakness, dizziness, disorientation, collapse, or seizures indicate that the reaction is no longer confined to the skin. The VCA description of anaphylaxis notes a progression that can include facial or muzzle swelling, hives, gastrointestinal signs, and restlessness before collapse and breathing difficulty. Treat any of these signs as an emergency.

Why a sting can become dangerous
Venom causes local pain and inflammation at the puncture site. In a sensitized cat, the immune system can produce a body-wide allergic response instead. The severity cannot be predicted from the size of the initial mark, and a cat that seems stable immediately after the sting can deteriorate later. Multiple stings also expose the cat to a larger venom load and can cause severe toxic reactions, while a mouth sting can threaten breathing through swelling alone.

Can you give a cat Benadryl?
Do not give diphenhydramine or another antihistamine until a veterinarian has confirmed that it is suitable and supplied the correct dose for your individual cat. Product strength, formulation, the cat’s weight, age, medical conditions, and other medicines all affect safe use. Some human products contain additional ingredients that are unsafe for pets. An antihistamine is not a substitute for emergency transport when breathing problems, major swelling, collapse, or other systemic signs are present.
If you have already given a medication, tell the veterinarian the exact product, concentration, amount, and time. Do not give an additional dose unless the veterinary professional instructs you to do so.

When home care is reasonable—and when it is not
Limited reaction suitable for close monitoring
Home first aid is only a temporary approach for a cat with a single, visible sting site and no other symptoms. The cat should be breathing normally, remain responsive, and have swelling confined to the local area. Scrape out a visible bee stinger, apply the cloth-wrapped cold pack, keep the cat calm, and maintain close observation. Contact your regular veterinarian for case-specific advice and clear instructions about how long to monitor.

Do not rely on home care for a sting in the mouth, multiple stings, rapidly increasing swelling, head or neck swelling, hives, panting, breathing difficulty, drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, severe agitation, disorientation, weakness, collapse, or seizures. Do not spend time trying to identify the insect if your cat is showing emergency signs; start transport and call the clinic on the way.

What the veterinary team may do
At the clinic, the team will assess the airway, breathing, circulation, level of consciousness, swelling, and the number and location of stings. Depending on the cat’s condition, treatment may include antihistamines, corticosteroids, epinephrine, intravenous fluids, and oxygen. These interventions require professional assessment and monitoring; they are not a home-treatment checklist.
A severely affected cat may need hospitalization. VCA notes that hospitalization can last one or two days depending on the animal’s response, but that timeframe is a possibility rather than a prediction for an individual cat. Follow-up instructions will depend on the signs observed, treatment given, and whether symptoms recur.
Transport and handling tips
- Call the veterinary clinic or emergency hospital while preparing to leave so staff can be ready for a possible allergic emergency.
- Use a secure carrier. If the carrier has a removable top, lower the cat in gently rather than forcing it through the small front door.
- Keep the car cool and quiet, and avoid pressure on a swollen face or neck.
- Bring the insect or a photograph only if it can be obtained safely; never delay transport to catch an insect.
- Tell the clinic when the sting happened, whether a stinger was removed, how many stings you suspect, which signs appeared, and any medication already given.
Common mistakes that can make the situation worse
- Squeezing a bee stinger with tweezers: scraping is preferred because squeezing can push more venom into the skin.
- Assuming a wasp sting is harmless because no stinger is visible: wasps and hornets generally do not leave stingers, but their venom can still cause a serious reaction.
- Waiting for collapse: breathing changes, facial swelling, hives, gastrointestinal signs, or abnormal behavior are earlier warning signs that need urgent care.
- Using a human medicine without guidance: an incorrect drug or dose can add a poisoning risk and delay effective treatment.
- Allowing first aid to delay transport: cooling a local swelling is supportive care, not protection against anaphylaxis or airway compromise.
- Approaching an active swarm: protect yourself first and call emergency services or veterinary help rather than risking additional stings.
Questions to have ready for the veterinarian
Before calling, note the approximate time of the sting, the suspected insect, the body location, whether a stinger was present, the number of stings you observed, and every change in behavior or physical signs. Record any medication and its exact amount. This information helps the veterinarian decide whether observation, a same-day examination, or immediate emergency treatment is safest.
Veterinary references emphasize that online first-aid information cannot replace an examination. If your cat’s condition is changing, use the phone to obtain direction while arranging care rather than relying on continued home observation.
