A quick, one-off episode after gulping is one possibility, but the water may also come up during vomiting triggered by a hairball or another problem. If the fluid returns without retching, it may be regurgitation rather than vomiting. Repeated episodes, increased thirst, or other signs of illness warrant veterinary advice.
First, tell vomiting from regurgitation
Vomiting usually involves visible effort, such as retching or abdominal contractions. Regurgitation is generally more passive and may happen soon after drinking. VCA notes that “Regurgitation often occurs immediately after eating or drinking.” That timing can be a clue, but it does not establish a diagnosis.

When you contact the clinic, describe how soon the water came back up, whether your cat heaved, and what the fluid looked like. Note any food or hair, along with changes in appetite, thirst, urination, stool, or energy. A short video of an episode can help the veterinary team distinguish the two.
Five possible causes of bringing up water
These are possible explanations, not a ranked list or diagnoses you can confirm at home. More than one factor may be involved.

1. Drinking too much or too quickly
A cat that gulps water may bring it back up soon afterward. A single episode following rapid drinking may be related to the timing, but recurring episodes should not automatically be blamed on gulping. A noticeable increase in thirst also deserves veterinary assessment.
2. A hairball or other stomach irritation
A hairball or swallowed material may already be irritating the stomach, with water coming up during the resulting vomiting. Hairballs are among the causes of feline vomiting described by the Cornell Feline Health Center. Regular brushing may reduce the amount of loose hair a cat swallows, but it is not a treatment for recurrent vomiting. Swallowed foreign objects can cause an obstruction.

3. An esophageal problem causing regurgitation
If water returns passively and soon after drinking, the issue may involve regurgitation from the esophagus rather than vomiting from the stomach. Drooling or difficulty swallowing alongside these episodes makes veterinary assessment more important.

4. Gastrointestinal illness, parasites, or obstruction
Parasites, gastrointestinal disease, and a foreign-body obstruction are among the possibilities veterinarians consider when a cat vomits. The appearance or timing of the episode cannot reliably distinguish these problems from less serious causes.

5. Metabolic or organ disease
Kidney disease, diabetes, and thyroid disease can be associated with vomiting. Changes in thirst or urination are useful details to report to the veterinarian, but drinking behavior alone cannot identify a particular disease.
When to contact a veterinarian
Cornell advises prompt evaluation if a cat vomits more often than once a week, or if vomiting occurs with lethargy, weakness, reduced appetite, blood, increased thirst, increased or decreased urination, or diarrhea. VCA advises immediate care when vomiting is accompanied by fever, lethargy, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, diarrhea, dehydration, blood, or suspected ingestion of a foreign object or toxic substance.

- Seek urgent veterinary care if your cat cannot keep water down or appears acutely unwell.
- Contact a veterinarian immediately if you suspect your cat swallowed a toxin or foreign object. Do not induce vomiting unless a veterinarian specifically tells you to.
- Keep fresh water freely available; do not restrict water to try to prevent another episode.
What to expect at a veterinary visit
The veterinarian will ask about the episodes and your cat’s other signs, then examine the cat. Depending on the findings, testing may include bloodwork and a fecal examination, with X-rays or ultrasound when indicated. VCA also lists blood and urine tests, radiographs, ultrasound, and, when a blockage is suspected, endoscopic biopsies or exploratory surgery. Treatment depends on the cause identified.
