Catnip’s scent can trigger sniffing, chewing, rubbing, rolling, batting, and kicking in some cats. The response is linked to the volatile compound nepetalactone and is mediated by smell, but it varies from cat to cat. Those behaviors show a response to the plant’s odor; they do not establish that a cat is experiencing a human-like “high.”
What happens when a cat encounters catnip?
A responsive cat may sniff or chew the plant, rub against it, roll, bat at it, or kick. Cats do not all show the same combination of behaviors, and the visible reaction alone cannot tell us exactly what the animal feels.

Catnip’s effect is associated with nepetalactone, a volatile compound. In experiments by B. L. Hart and M. G. Leedy, removing the vomeronasal organ did not reduce the response, while olfactory bulbectomy immediately eliminated it. Why do some cats not respond to catnip?
Individual cats differ in whether they respond and how they behave. In a study of 100 cats, one in three did not respond to catnip. That is a result from the study’s sample, not a prediction that any particular cat will react—or fail to react.

A smaller 2022 study, involving six cats, found differences between individuals in their responses to cat-attracting plants and volatile compounds. The authors proposed that personality and genetic variation in olfactory receptor genes could help explain those differences. Almost 75% of the cats in that study that did not respond to catnip responded to silver vine. The study also found dried silver-vine fruit-gall powder and catnip popular among the tested options. Is catnip safe for cats?
The ASPCA lists vomiting and diarrhea as possible clinical signs associated with catnip, and notes that some cats become sedated while others become stimulated. If your cat develops concerning symptoms after encountering catnip, contact a veterinarian. ASPCA: Catnip
