The practical case against making a toilet your cat’s only place to go is about choice and welfare—not proof that every toilet-trained cat will be harmed.
Why shouldn’t I train my cat to use the toilet?
There is no evidence in the cited guidance that toilet training inevitably causes injury or a specific clinical problem. The concern is that relying on a toilet can remove features cats may need: a suitable surface, enough space, privacy, easy access, and more than one toileting location. Keeping an appropriate litter tray available preserves those options.

1. Your cat still needs a suitable toileting option
Cats Protection advises keeping an indoor litter tray available even for cats that usually toilet outdoors. A toilet-training routine should not be a reason to remove a tray your cat can use.
2. Toileting can leave cats feeling vulnerable
Cats Protection says cats feel particularly vulnerable when they toilet and recommends a quiet, private place for a tray. A bathroom may be busy, exposed, or difficult to access at some times; that may not suit every cat.

3. A toilet does not provide the space and access of a suitable tray
A litter tray should be large enough for a cat to turn around in. Cats Protection also recommends low sides for older cats or cats with mobility problems. A toilet seat does not offer those tray features, and reaching or balancing on it may be unsuitable for some cats.
4. Multi-cat homes need enough toileting locations
Cats Protection recommends one tray per cat plus one extra. The American Veterinary Medical Association advises at least one litter box per cat, in more than one location, for multi-cat homes. A single household toilet cannot provide those separate locations.

5. Cats can prefer a particular litter texture
Cats Protection notes that cats may prefer familiar litter and often favor fine or sandy textures. A toilet offers a different surface, and one that does not suit an individual cat’s preference.

6. Changing toileting arrangements should be gradual
Cats Protection recommends making changes to a tray, litter, or location gradually. Abruptly replacing a familiar tray with a toilet does not follow that advice, and the guidance does not establish that a rapid switch will work for every cat.

7. A change in toileting habits can signal a health problem
Urinary problems can lead to inappropriate or more frequent urination. If your cat’s habits change, do not assume the problem is a training setback: Cats Protection advises contacting a vet about changes in toileting.
8. Stress and the home setup can affect toileting
Cats Protection lists stress, tray cleanliness, unsuitable litter, tray availability, and tray location among possible factors in inappropriate urination. A toilet-training plan does not address every possible cause, so look at the cat’s health and environment rather than treating every accident as disobedience.

9. Older or mobility-impaired cats may need easier access
Older cats may struggle to reach a toilet in time. Cats Protection says low-sided trays and additional trays around the home may help older cats; those options can also be important to consider when mobility is limited.
10. Ongoing problems may need professional help
If a toileting problem persists, Cats Protection recommends veterinary assessment first. If no medical explanation is found, a qualified cat behaviorist may be appropriate. Training alone should not replace that route to help.

What litter-tray setup should I keep available?
Choose a tray and location around your cat’s needs, not just household convenience. Cats Protection recommends a quiet, private location away from food and water and busy walkways. For a multi-cat home, follow the one-tray-per-cat-plus-one recommendation and place trays in separate locations.
- Use a tray large enough for your cat to turn around in; consider low sides if your cat is older or has mobility issues.
- Offer familiar litter where possible. If changing litter, tray, or location, make the change gradually.
- Keep trays clean and make sure cats can reach them reliably.
- Keep an indoor tray available even if your cat usually goes outdoors.
Why is my cat peeing outside the litter box?
There may be a medical or environmental reason, including urinary problems, stress, an unsuitable or dirty tray, too few trays, or an inconvenient location. A sudden change in urination warrants veterinary advice. If a vet finds no medical explanation and the problem continues, ask about a qualified behaviorist.
