Choose cat toys by the behavior they invite—stalking, chasing, batting, pouncing or foraging—and by how your own cat responds. Start with one or two styles, watch what draws your cat in, then rotate the toys that hold its interest. Use interactive toys to keep play focused on an object, supervise toys with loose string or elastic, and choose food puzzles only if they fit your cat’s feeding plan.
Why the right toys matter
Play is more than a distraction: it gives cats opportunities to express play and predatory behavior. The Feline Veterinary Medical Association (FelineVMA) includes those opportunities among five pillars of a healthy feline environment. Its 2025 position statement also notes that meeting indoor cats’ needs can be challenging. Toys help provide some of that enrichment, but they are only one part of the environment a cat needs.

There is no universal best toy. A cat may prefer to chase a lure, bat a small object, pounce on something that moves along the floor, or work for food. Choose based on the behavior and movement your cat responds to, rather than assuming a particular toy will suit every cat.

1. Begin with the behavior your cat enjoys
Notice whether your cat tends to stalk, chase, bat, pounce or forage. That observation gives you a useful starting point: a moving lure may suit a chaser, while a food puzzle may appeal to a cat that likes to search and work for a reward.

2. Try a toy that resembles prey
A toy mouse moved across the floor or feathers attached to a wand can encourage interactive play. The key is not a particular product; it is whether the toy’s movement engages your cat.
3. Make the toy move—and let your cat catch it
Move a lure in ways that invite pursuit instead of simply holding it in front of your cat. Allow occasional captures, too. FelineVMA’s environmental-needs guidance says, “Cats need to be able to capture the ‘prey’, at least intermittently, to prevent frustration.”

4. Keep hands and feet out of the game
Use a wand or toss toy as the target rather than wiggling fingers or toes. This directs chasing and biting toward an object, not a person. The FelineVMA Positive Reinforcement Training Educational Toolkit recommends at least two play sessions daily; treat that as the toolkit’s recommendation, not a fixed prescription that fits every cat.

Wand toys with string or elastic are for supervised play, not unsupervised access. International Cat Care warns that these attachments can catch around a kitten’s neck or leg. Put the toy away after play, especially when a kitten is left alone.

6. Consider food puzzles or treat-dispensing balls
Food puzzles and treat balls can give cats opportunities to forage and engage with food in a more active way. Choose one only if it works with your cat’s feeding plan. A puzzle feeder does not guarantee weight loss or treat a medical condition; ask your veterinary team about feeding changes when health or weight is a concern.
7. Offer different styles before settling on favorites
Try a small mix of interactive and self-directed options, such as a wand toy and a food puzzle. Cats’ preferences differ, and the available guidance does not establish one best toy for all cats.

12. Treat toys as one piece of a healthy environment
Toys can support play and foraging, but they do not replace other environmental needs such as safe places and separated household resources. Consider play as part of a broader setup that lets your cat feel secure and express normal behavior.
