Choose a recipe only after confirming its organic claim and certifier on the package, then checking that its nutritional adequacy statement says it is complete and balanced for your cat’s life stage. Organic certification concerns how ingredients are produced and handled; it is not a rating of a food’s safety, healthfulness, or nutrition.
What makes cat food organic?
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Organic Program allows pet food to be certified under current organic production and handling standards. The package—not a brand name or a word such as “natural”—is where to verify the claim. Check the precise wording on the principal display panel, whether the USDA organic seal appears where applicable, and the certifier information. USDA Agricultural Marketing Service: Organic labeling

Organic claim categories matter. AAFCO’s consumer guidance says certified organic products display the USDA seal and contain at least 95% organic ingredients. A product labeled “made with organic” ingredients is a different category from one labeled “organic”; neither wording means that every ingredient is organic. Read the front label and ingredient statement together. AAFCO: Organic pet food

Organic certification does not establish that a food is safer, healthier, or more nutritious than a conventional one. AAFCO puts it plainly: “The USDA does not consider organic foods to be necessarily safer, healthier or more nutritious than conventionally-produced foods.” Treat organic as a sourcing preference, not a substitute for nutritional suitability.

How to tell whether a recipe is suitable as a staple diet
For a food you plan to serve as your cat’s main diet, find the nutritional adequacy statement on the package. FDA identifies this as perhaps the most important label check: the statement should say the food is “complete and balanced” for the relevant life stage. That claim must be supported by AAFCO cat-food nutrient profiles or feeding procedures. Make sure the stated life stage matches your cat’s needs; a food intended for one stage is not automatically appropriate for another. FDA: Complete and balanced pet food
Treats, snacks, and supplements are commonly not intended to be fed as a sole diet. Do not use one as your cat’s complete food unless its own adequacy statement supports that purpose.

How to compare wet and dry food fairly
Guaranteed-analysis percentages are listed on an as-fed basis, which includes the food’s moisture. AAFCO nutrient profiles use a moisture-free basis. As a result, the crude-protein figure on a dry-food label cannot be compared directly with the figure on a canned-food label. Compare products with similar moisture, or convert the values to a dry-matter basis before drawing conclusions. A larger printed protein percentage alone does not establish that one recipe is the better choice. FDA: Complete and balanced pet food

Organic cat food examples to investigate
Retailer listings provide leads, not independent evidence of health outcomes, palatability, or a product’s current package details. Two Castor & Pollux ORGANIX dry recipes have retailer listings:
Rank #3
- Meat is #1 Ingredient - Since the dawn of time, cats have loved their protein—so that’s why this dish is packed with delicious, crunchy bites of the good stuff: USA farm-raised chicken and duck.
- Protein-Rich - Packed with 34% protein! This bag of kibble boosts your pet’s energy and helps them maintain lean muscle mass.
- Pre & Probiotics for Easy Digestion - Nature’s mighty little biotics work hard to ensure your pet’s gut is in tiptop shape.
- Non-GMO Protein & Produce - When it comes to your pet’s veggies and protein, GMOs aren’t invited to the party. #SorryNotSorry
- Grain-Free - Absolutely no corn, wheat, rice, soy, or oats in sight. We don’t pack your pet’s food with grains just to help us save a buck or two.
- Whole Foods lists Castor & Pollux ORGANIX Organic Chicken & Brown Rice Recipe dry cat food and describes it as USDA organic.
- H-E-B lists Castor & Pollux ORGANIX Chicken, Pea & Turkey Healthy Adult Indoor Cat Food and describes it as complete and balanced.
Those retailer descriptions are not a substitute for the exact, current package. Verify the organic claim, certifier, adequacy statement, life stage, and recipe yourself before choosing either product. A CatFoodAdvisor review updated September 24, 2025, reports that the ORGANIX wet range has been discontinued; that report is not a current manufacturer notice, so check availability rather than assuming the wet recipes are on sale. It does not establish that the dry range has been discontinued. CatFoodAdvisor: ORGANIX wet-food review

- Verify the organic claim. Read the exact category wording, look for the USDA seal where applicable, and check the certifier information.
- Confirm nutritional adequacy. Find the statement that the food is complete and balanced, and confirm that it covers your cat’s life stage.
- Compare like with like. Consider wet or dry format and moisture-adjusted nutrient values rather than relying on as-fed percentages across different formats.
- Fit the recipe to your cat. Account for known dietary needs and whether your cat accepts the food; organic status cannot answer either question.
- Check the current product. Confirm the package’s recipe and label details and whether the food is currently available.
