Kittens can have treats, but the more useful questions are when to start, how much is too much, and what to check on the label. The short answer from the sources reviewed here: wait until a kitten is at least eight weeks old and fully switched to kitten food, keep treats well under 10% of daily calories, and choose products that are sized and labeled for kittens.
This guide does not rank seven named products. The sources behind it set out selection criteria and categories, not verified product winners, and no individual item was tested for this article. Instead, it gives you the checks that separate a suitable kitten treat from one that is too large, too rich, or simply the wrong kind of food for a growing cat.
When a kitten can start getting treats
Purina’s kitten feeding guidance (Purina Pet Expert Team, “Can Kittens Have Treats?”, updated June 5, 2025) advises waiting until a kitten is at least eight weeks old and fully transitioned to kitten food. Treat that as a manufacturer’s recommendation rather than a veterinary prescription. If your kitten is younger than eight weeks, is still moving onto a new food, or has a health issue, ask your veterinarian before offering anything beyond its regular meals.

How much treat is too much
Treat limits are a share of the day’s calories, not a number of pieces. Purina says treats should be no more than 10% of daily calories, and the WSAVA Nutrition Committee’s 2025 guide to feeding treats to cats says less than 10%. Use the stricter figure as your ceiling.

The sources do not give a kitten-specific calorie allowance. WSAVA’s example calorie table is based on average healthy adult cats at ideal body condition, so do not use it to size a kitten’s portions. A kitten’s needs change quickly as it grows, which is why a veterinarian should set the daily target.
Treats also do not replace complete food. The U.S. FDA’s page “Complete and Balanced Pet Food” (published 2023) notes that treats, snacks, and supplements are typically not intended to be a pet’s sole diet. WSAVA puts it more bluntly: treats should never replace a meal.

- Ask your veterinarian for your kitten’s daily calorie target.
- Read the calories per treat on the package. If the label does not state them, do not give the product until you have an answer from the manufacturer.
- Count treats against the target and reduce the kitten’s meal by the same number of calories.
- Watch the body condition over several weeks and adjust with your vet if the kitten gains weight.
What to check on the label
Kitten-labeled products are not all the same. Purina notes that most cat treats are not designed with kittens in mind and can be very high in calories, and that the best treats are made with the kitten’s age and size in mind. Use the table below to compare products on the criteria that matter most.
| Criterion | What to look for | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Age suitability | An explicit kitten or minimum-age statement on the package | Purina and WSAVA both say ordinary cat treats may not suit kittens; an adult-labeled product is not a kitten product by default. |
| Size and texture | Small pieces that a kitten can bite and chew quickly | WSAVA identifies choking risk when treats are too large or the wrong shape; supervise all chews. |
| Calories per treat | A stated calorie figure per piece | Calories count toward the 10% (or less) limit, so the piece count must fit your kitten’s budget. |
| Intended use | Training, teething, or everyday treat | Each use has different size and frequency needs (see below). |
| Ingredients and allergens | Full ingredient list, including dairy and any named proteins | WSAVA notes many cats are lactose intolerant and advises against milk and dairy. Check for any ingredient your kitten has reacted to before. |
| Veterinary approval for health needs | Whether the product fits a medical or prescription diet | Conventional treats may be inappropriate for medical conditions, food sensitivities, or veterinary-prescribed diets. |
Matching treats to their purpose
Training treats
Purina describes small, quick-to-eat rewards as the most useful for training. A reward that takes several seconds to chew interrupts a session and adds calories without much benefit. Break a piece into smaller bits if needed, and count each one against the daily limit.

Teething treats
Teething treats are a separate category, not just a regular treat with a different shape. Purina places the approximate teething period at three to four months through around six months of age. Ask your veterinarian before starting dental treats, and check that the product is labeled for kittens and suits your kitten’s size.
What to keep out of the bowl
WSAVA warns that bones can cause significant damage, that unprocessed raw animal treats carry pathogen-transmission risk, and that many human foods are unhealthy or dangerous for cats. Its list of toxic ingredients includes:

Why this guide does not name seven winners
A product-level ranking would need current label checks for age suitability, piece size, calories, and intended use for each item. Those checks were not available for this article, so naming seven products would imply a verification that has not been done. The sources here also do not establish a universal best texture or protein for every kitten.
The most common shopping resource on this topic is PetMD’s “11 Best Cat Treats in 2026, Recommended by Vets” (updated January 6, 2026). It is a general cat-treat roundup curated by a panel employed by the retailer Chewy, and it is written for adult cats. Its selection criteria are useful, but it does not confirm that any listed product is suitable for kittens. Read the label yourself before buying: PetMD’s cat treat guide.
The U.S. FDA’s labeling guidance and the WSAVA treat guide are the sources to rely on for the principles above. For a shortlist of kitten products, start with the table, check each package against it, and confirm the choice with your veterinarian.
