The Miele Guard L1 Cat & Dog Flex suits a pet-owning home that wants deep pet-hair pickup, easy manoeuvring and a long reach from a corded cylinder. It has two clear drawbacks. It is expensive for a corded vacuum, and its brush roll has no anti-hair-wrap system, so you will need to pull hair off the roller by hand. Expert Reviews’ Jo Plumridge published a broadly positive review on 11 February 2026, and the test figures below come from that review.
What the Flex model is, exactly
Miele sells several Guard L1 variants, so the model number matters. The Flex model discussed here is the Guard L1 Cat & Dog Flex, material number 12652250, EAN 4002516833222. Miele UK’s product page for that material number lists the following.
| Feature | Miele UK listing (material number 12652250) |
|---|---|
| Type | Corded cylinder vacuum, bagged |
| Weight | 6.6 kg |
| Motor rating | 890 W |
| Volume level | 74 dB (Miele’s stated figure) |
| Cable length | 8.5 m |
| Operating radius | 12 m |
| Dustbag volume | 3.5 L |
| Bag type | HyClean Pure TU |
| Exhaust filter | Active AirClean |
| Floor head | AllTeQ floorhead SBD 365-3 |
| Brush | TurboTeQ brush STB 305-3 |
The listed accessories also include upholstery and crevice tools, an extra-long flexible SFD 20 crevice nozzle, a dusting brush, a starter bag and a voucher. Package contents are as shown on Miele UK’s page when it was checked, so confirm them against the live listing before you buy.
Miele’s separate UK product sheet for the “Guard L1 Cat & Dog” (material number 12652240, EAN 4002516833215) shows the same core figures, including HyClean Pure TU bags and the TurboTeQ STB 305-3 brush. It is a related product, not the Flex SKU, so do not treat its material number as the Flex’s.

How it performed in Expert Reviews’ tests
Expert Reviews reported the following results. They are the reviewer’s own measurements under her test conditions, not a manufacturer specification, and a different home, floor covering or test method can produce different figures.
| Test | Result reported | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum vacuum-meter reading | 24 kPa | Peak reading on the reviewer’s meter |
| Cheerios pickup | 23 g of 26 g | Carpet and hard floor; some debris was expelled from the side of the head on hard floors |
| Pet hair pickup | 4 g of 5 g | Collected on each surface tested |
| Flour pickup | 49 g of 50 g | Collected in a single pass |
Carpet and hard floors
The reviewer found the TurboTeQ head gave the best performance, and that is the head to use for carpet and for hair. Pickup was strong on both surfaces, though hard floors showed some debris being pushed out of the side of the head. If you have bare boards or tiles that gather crumbs and grit, expect a little spillage at the edges.
Rugs and delicate floor coverings
The universal head was the gentler option. The reviewer used it on delicate flooring, including century-old Persian rugs. If you own fine or antique rugs, do not assume the TurboTeQ head is right for them. Switch to the universal head for those surfaces.

Upholstery, furniture and stairs
The 2-in-1 upholstery and crevice tool removed pet hair from furniture and cushions effectively, according to the review. The machine is noticeably loud during some upholstery cleaning, so plan to use that tool when others are not home or sleeping.

The Flex has no anti-hair-wrap technology, and this is the review’s main irritation. Pet hair, long fur and the odd string can wind around the roller. Build a short routine so this doesn’t turn into a problem:
- Check the brush roll after each carpet session, especially after a long-haired dog or cat has been in the room.
- Lift the TurboTeQ brush out and cut or pull away wrapped hair before it tightens.
- Look at the ends of the roller where hair collects most, and wipe any gritty buildup from the housing.
- Expect the roller to need cleaning more often than it would on a machine with anti-hair-wrap.
If you do not want to do this regularly, a vacuum with anti-hair-wrap technology is the better fit.

Bags, filters and running costs
The Flex takes HyClean Pure TU bags. The dustbag holds 3.5 L. Miele suggests a bag could last around three months, but the actual life depends on home size, how often you vacuum and how much dirt you pick up. Expect more frequent changes in a home with several pets.
Bag prices have shifted. Expert Reviews’ article gave £13.99 for four bags. When Miele’s UK product page was checked later, it showed £11.75 for a four-pack. Check the live price before you budget, because the older review figure is not current.

The exact Flex model uses an Active AirClean exhaust filter. Miele’s UK series page states that a HEPA filter combined with HyClean Pure bags captures 99.999% of fine dust, and that a HEPA filter can be added to Guard L1 models that do not already include one. That 99.999% figure belongs to the HEPA-and-bag configuration, not to the Flex as sold with Active AirClean. A manufacturer’s filtration claim does not establish health benefits or allergy relief for any particular user.

Replacement parts
Miele’s product page lists the Active AirClean filter and the TurboTeQ STB 305-3 brush as replacement parts. A new Flex already includes both, so treat them as spares for later, not as extras you must buy at the start. Confirm compatibility with your exact model number before ordering.
Price and warranty
Miele UK listed the Flex at £399 when the page was checked on 7 October 2026. Expert Reviews reported the same £399 price in February 2026. A listing price is a snapshot, so check the current figure with the retailer before you buy. The review also states a two-year warranty. Warranty terms can depend on market and date, so confirm the current UK terms with Miele or your seller.

Miele says that during development of the Guard series it tested models and core components at various power levels for 750 hours of use, which it equates to 37.5 hours a year, or 20 years of use. This was a series development test, not a warranty and not a measurement of how long any one machine will last. Use it as an indication of how Miele tests its design, not as a promise about your vacuum.

Flex or standard Guard L1 Cat & Dog?
Miele’s UK listings for the Flex (12652250) and the standard Cat & Dog (12652240) give the same core specification for weight, motor, cable, radius, bag size, volume level, bag type and TurboTeQ brush. The model identifier is the difference you need to check. Buy by material number or EAN, and make sure the listing you choose says “Flex” if that is the version you want.
Who should buy it, and who should skip it
Buy it if:
- You have a dog or cat that sheds heavily onto carpets, rugs or upholstery and you want strong pickup.
- You value easy manoeuvring and a long cable reach across rooms.
- You are comfortable paying a premium for a corded machine and changing bags regularly.
- You will clear the brush roll by hand as part of your routine.
Skip it if:
- You want to avoid cleaning the roller, in which case choose a machine with anti-hair-wrap technology.
- You want cordless freedom and do not want to plug in and move around the mains socket.
- Your budget is tight. The price is high for a corded vacuum, and recurring bag costs add up.
- You own many delicate or antique rugs and want one head for everything, since the TurboTeQ and universal heads serve different surfaces.
For most pet owners with carpets and upholstery who accept a manual brush clean, the Flex delivers the pickup and manoeuvrability the review praises.
