A cat weight calculator can provide a rough starting estimate, but a scale reading alone cannot tell you whether your cat is overweight. Cats differ in frame, age, breed, and health, so assess body shape and fat coverage as well as weight—and confirm a target weight or weight-loss plan with your veterinarian.
What a cat weight calculator can—and can’t—tell you
The Cats.com calculator describes itself as a five-step tool. Its visible inputs include your cat’s name, breed, weight in pounds, age, spay/neuter status, and body condition. It uses those owner-entered details to offer an estimate; it is not a conventional human-style BMI calculation and does not diagnose obesity.

There is no single ideal scale weight for every cat. Cats.com notes that many cats fall in an 8–12 lb range, but that is not a universal target: skeletal size and breed matter, and a large-framed breed such as a Maine Coon may appropriately weigh substantially more. Individual health and age also affect what is appropriate. Treat any calculator result as a prompt for a veterinary discussion, not a diagnosis or prescribed goal.

The Cats.com article uses a five-level body-condition scale and associates each score with an approximate difference from ideal weight:

For an approximate calculation, the article gives: ideal weight = current weight × (100% − percentage overweight). Its example is a 15 lb cat assigned score 5: 15 × 0.7 = 10.5 lb. This is the article’s rough arithmetic, not a veterinarian-validated target for an individual cat. The estimate depends on the score selected by the owner, so an inaccurate score can produce a misleading result.
How to judge body condition at home
Body-condition scoring considers what you can see and feel, not just the number on the scale. The Cats.com five-level descriptions consider how prominent or covered the ribs and other bones are, whether a waist is visible, whether the abdomen rises toward the hind legs, and whether fat deposits are present. These observations can help you prepare questions for a vet, but hands-on interpretation is best discussed at a veterinary visit.

Do not confuse the five-point and nine-point scales
The Cats.com calculator uses a 1-to-5 scale. WSAVA’s veterinary body-condition chart uses a 1-to-9 scale, where 5/9 is ideal. At 5/9, ribs can be felt beneath a slight fat covering, a waist is visible behind the ribs, and the abdominal fat pad is minimal. Scores 6–9 indicate progressively more fat: ribs become harder to feel, the waist less apparent, the abdomen rounder, and fat deposits more obvious. WSAVA notes that 6/9 may be acceptable for some cats, particularly older cats. Do not treat a Cats.com score of 5 as equivalent to WSAVA 5/9; the scales use different ranges and descriptions. Track weight, body condition, and muscle condition
A weight trend is more useful when measurements are consistent: use the same scale and similar conditions when recording your cat’s weight, and record body-condition score alongside it. Weight alone can miss changes in muscle. WSAVA recommends monitoring body weight, body-condition score, and muscle-condition score together over time. A digital pet scale can make repeated weight measurements easier, but it cannot determine fat percentage or replace body-condition scoring and veterinary assessment. If you notice weight change or are unsure how to score your cat, bring your records and questions to the next exam.
Why a calculator should not set your cat’s calories
The Cats.com article gives 180–200 kcal per day as an example for an average cat with an ideal weight of 10 lb, and suggests 80% of that example amount for weight loss. Those figures are not a general feeding prescription. AAHA and AAFP guidance explains that energy needs vary with age, body condition, muscle condition, neuter status, health, and activity; food amounts should be adjusted for the individual cat. How to use a result in a veterinary visit
- Record the inputs and result. Note the measured weight, the body-condition score you selected, and the date; the estimate is only as useful as those inputs.
- Describe what you observe. Tell the veterinarian whether the ribs are easy to feel, a waist is visible, the abdomen tucks upward, or fat deposits are apparent. Ask how the clinic’s assessment compares with your at-home impression.
- Ask for an individual target and plan. Confirm whether weight loss is appropriate, what target to aim for, and how much and what type of food to feed. Ask how often to recheck weight and body and muscle condition.
The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention’s 2018 survey, as reported by Cats.com, found that about 70% of cat owners wanted weight-loss and diet conversations with their veterinarian, while about 60% reported having them. Those are historical, secondhand figures—not a current estimate—but they underline the value of raising the subject directly.
