But accepting a treat does not rule out dental pain or illness—and it does not show that your cat is getting enough complete nutrition. If the change is sudden, contact your veterinarian promptly rather than assuming your cat is simply picky.
Why a cat may take treats but refuse dry food
The contrast alone cannot identify the cause. Treats may be easier to accept or more appealing than a regular meal, and a cat with a health problem may still eat something especially enticing. These are possibilities, not a diagnosis; a sudden appetite change deserves veterinary attention.

1. Dental pain or another health problem
Dental disease can make chewing painful, and a casual look in the mouth at home cannot reliably rule it out. Nausea, gastrointestinal or kidney disease, arthritis, respiratory congestion, and other problems can also reduce appetite. A cat may nevertheless accept a treat, so treat-taking is not proof that the cat is well. Cornell’s Feline Health Center describes anorexia as a broad clinical sign rather than a disease in itself.
2. A changed food preference, recipe, or kibble shape
Cats can respond to a food’s smell, taste, texture, and shape. A changed recipe, an unfamiliar bag, or a different presentation may put a cat off its usual kibble. This is a reasonable possibility to discuss with your veterinarian, but a food preference explanation should not be used to dismiss a sudden refusal.

3. Stale food, poor storage, or a dirty bowl
Food that is stale, rancid, contaminated, or stored poorly may be less appealing. Check the package date and condition, smell the food, and make sure it has been stored as directed. Wash the bowl; residue or odors can put some cats off eating. PetMD’s guidance on why a cat may not be eating includes stale or rancid food and dirty containers among possible deterrents.
4. Stress or an uncomfortable feeding location
A moved bowl, a disrupted routine, a busy area, or another animal nearby can make a cat less willing to eat. Consider whether anything changed around the feeding place and, while you seek advice, offer familiar food in a calm location where the cat can eat without pressure.

5. Treats or other calories are displacing meals
Treats can be more enticing than kibble and add calories. If a cat receives frequent treats—or food used to give medication—it may be less interested in a meal. Record all food and treats rather than counting only what goes into the bowl. VCA recommends a food diary when an owner is unsure how many calories a cat is consuming; that tracking suggestion is not a reason to wait before calling about a sudden refusal.

Occasional treats can make it look as though a cat is eating while total intake is still inadequate. Treat acceptance does not establish that the cat is getting enough food or a nutritionally complete diet. Do not infer hydration from this behavior either: note whether your cat is drinking and has access to water, and report changes to the veterinarian.

When to contact a veterinarian
Call your veterinarian promptly about a sudden drop in appetite, particularly if your cat is lethargic, vomiting, losing weight, showing pain, drooling, struggling to chew or swallow, or showing other signs of illness. The appropriate urgency depends on age, health, and how much the cat is actually eating.
Cornell advises that appetite loss can seriously affect a mature cat’s health if it persists for as little as 24 hours; PetMD likewise advises not letting a cat go more than 24 hours without eating. Treat these as urgency guidance, not permission to wait a full day—especially if your cat is unwell, a kitten, or eating very little. Cornell warns that food avoidance for just 12 hours can pose a lethal threat to a kitten younger than six weeks. Contact a veterinary clinic sooner for a young kitten or any cat whose condition concerns you.

A veterinarian may examine the mouth and teeth and, depending on the findings, recommend tests such as bloodwork, urinalysis, fecal testing, or dental X-rays. Cornell recommends a full veterinary workup for a cat that is not eating; an exam helps determine which further tests are appropriate.

What to do while arranging veterinary advice
- Measure and record what your cat actually eats, including treats and food used to give medication. Note when the change began and any other symptoms.
- Check that the food is fresh, the package is in good condition, and the bowl is clean.
- Offer familiar food in a calm place. Ask the clinic before offering human food, changing a prescribed diet, or relying on treats; International Cat Care’s feeding guidance cautions against excessive treats and recommends checking whether tempting foods are appropriate.
- Do not force-feed unless a veterinary professional specifically directs you to do so. Cornell notes that force-feeding can worsen food aversion, and International Cat Care warns of risks associated with syringe feeding.
If you are uncertain about intake and your cat is otherwise stable, a diary can help your veterinarian assess what is being consumed. VCA’s suggested three-to-five-day diary is for tracking calorie intake, not a waiting period for a cat with sudden refusal or signs of illness.

If your veterinarian says a food trial is appropriate
After an urgent medical cause has been considered, ask your veterinarian whether trying a different food is suitable—especially if your cat has a prescribed diet or other health needs. Compare options on these points rather than assuming a particular food will fix appetite loss:
- Nutritional suitability: Is it complete and balanced for your cat’s life stage and health needs?
- Texture and shape: Does the cat accept the kibble’s size, shape, and feel?
- Smell and taste: Does the cat show interest in its aroma and flavor?
- Freshness and handling: Is the package in good condition, and can the food be stored properly?
- Compatibility with care: Does the option fit any veterinary instructions or prescribed diet?
A food trial is not a substitute for investigating pain or illness when appetite has changed suddenly.
