It may cause greasy, discolored or flaky skin, redness, hair thinning, itch, ear changes, or greasy material around the claws. These signs can also come from allergies, parasites, bacteria, or other illness, so appearance alone cannot confirm a yeast infection. A veterinarian can examine your cat and use tests such as skin cytology to decide whether yeast is contributing to the problem and how to treat it.
Can cats get yeast infections on their skin?
Yes. Malassezia dermatitis is recognized in cats, although it is encountered less often than in dogs. Malassezia yeasts can live normally on the skin; their presence does not by itself mean they are causing disease. The term “yeast infection” is a convenient shorthand, while Malassezia dermatitis describes inflammation associated with increased yeast in a cat with compatible skin changes. A veterinarian interprets test results alongside the lesions and the cat’s history. The World Association for Veterinary Dermatology (WAVD) consensus guideline explains that complete elimination of Malassezia is unrealistic because the organisms are part of normal skin flora.

What are the signs of a yeast infection in cats?
Signs vary with the cat and any underlying skin problem. Possible changes include greasy skin or discharge, adherent brownish scales, redness, discoloration, hair thinning or loss, and sometimes itching. The face, chin, neck, limbs, abdomen, and ear canals may be affected. Some cats have more localized changes; others have broader skin involvement. These findings are not specific to yeast and can overlap with other feline skin conditions. The University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine describes feline cases with greasy scaling, redness, reduced hair, and brownish adherent scales; Merck Veterinary Manual’s cat-owner guidance notes that itch, scaling, redness, thickened or discolored skin, oiliness, odor, and hair loss can occur in feline dermatitis generally, not just Malassezia disease.

Ear involvement can look like dark, waxy or flaky discharge, redness, odor, itch, discomfort, or thickening of the ear canal. Mites, bacteria, and other causes may produce similar signs or occur at the same time, so ear debris alone cannot establish a yeast cause. The WAVD guideline describes ear canals among possible sites of feline Malassezia involvement.

Claws and claw folds
Greasy brown material or inflammation around the claws and in the claw folds can occur, including in descriptions of Devon Rex and Sphynx cats. A veterinarian can distinguish this from other causes of claw-fold changes. The WAVD guideline discusses these presentations in predisposed cats.
When to seek veterinary care
Arrange veterinary assessment for skin changes that persist, recur, spread, or seem painful. Seek prompt advice if your cat has marked discomfort, ulceration, skin that is unusually easy to remove with the hair, widespread changes, or seems unwell overall. Some uncommon feline presentations can accompany serious underlying disorders, which is one reason not to rely on home diagnosis. The WAVD guideline discusses serious underlying disease in some atypical cases.

What causes Malassezia dermatitis in cats?
Malassezia yeasts are opportunistic: disease is associated with increased yeast in the context of a susceptible or inflamed skin environment, rather than simply with finding the organism. Reported associations include allergic skin disease, adverse food reaction, and flea-bite hypersensitivity. Devon Rex and Sphynx cats are described as predisposed. Some recurrent cases remain unexplained even after investigation. The evidence linking diabetes to feline Malassezia dermatitis is conflicting. The WAVD consensus guideline reviews these associations.

Other systemic problems, including retroviral infection, diabetes, neoplasia, and paraneoplastic syndromes, have been reported in discussions of feline skin disease. These are possibilities a veterinarian may consider in context; they do not prove that any particular condition caused an individual cat’s skin signs. FIV-positive cats have been reported to carry more Malassezia organisms without corresponding clinical signs, another reason that organism detection alone does not equal dermatitis. The University of Illinois overview discusses systemic associations, and the WAVD guideline notes the distinction between carriage and clinical disease.

How does a veterinarian diagnose it?
Diagnosis usually combines the skin examination and medical history with testing of material from affected areas. Cytology—examining a sample under a microscope—can help identify yeast on a lesion. Depending on the site and appearance, the veterinarian may collect material in different ways or consider appropriate quantitative culture. Finding yeast must still be interpreted alongside compatible inflammation because some organisms may be present on healthy skin. The University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine describes cytology and sampling according to the lesion, while the WAVD guideline recommends assessment of lesional material.
If an initial sample is negative but suspicion remains, the veterinarian may sample additional sites or use another diagnostic method, while reconsidering other possible causes. A biopsy alone is not a stand-alone confirmation of Malassezia dermatitis. In some cases, the veterinarian may assess both skin improvement and the change in yeast on follow-up testing. If yeast numbers fall but the skin does not improve, another inflammatory cause may be driving the signs; incomplete improvement can prompt a review of application or medication adherence, further investigation, or a change in the plan. The WAVD guideline discusses these diagnostic and recheck considerations.

How is yeast dermatitis in cats treated?
Treatment is veterinarian-directed. It may use a topical antifungal, a systemic antifungal, or both, depending on where the lesions are, how extensive they are, what underlying problem is suspected, and what the individual cat can tolerate. The veterinarian may also recommend treating an allergy, flea problem, other infection, or systemic condition that helped create the conditions for overgrowth. Relapse is more likely if a predisposing problem remains unmanaged. The University of Illinois overview describes topical and systemic approaches; the WAVD guideline emphasizes investigation and management of underlying disease where possible.
Evidence for specific feline treatments is limited. The WAVD guideline characterizes evidence for oral itraconazole in cats as weak and says topical chlorhexidine and azole products have not been evaluated specifically in cats. Their use may be considered in appropriate circumstances, but the evidence gap is not proof that every product works equally well or suits every cat. Although the University of Illinois overview lists antifungal ingredients and describes shampoos used in general treatment, that overview should not be taken as a cat-specific prescription or schedule. Ask the veterinarian which product, application method, and recheck plan suit your cat. Do not apply human antifungal creams or ear products, or give oral antifungals, unless the veterinarian directs you to do so. The WAVD guideline details the feline evidence limitations; the University of Illinois overview provides general treatment context.

What to discuss with your veterinarian
Because feline-specific product comparisons are not well established, a useful discussion focuses on the cat and the practical treatment plan rather than a brand ranking. Consider asking:
- Which areas are affected, and is treatment needed only at those sites or more broadly?
- What underlying cause should be investigated or treated?
- Can my cat tolerate topical application, and what is the safest practical approach?
- Is the proposed product appropriate and authorized for cats where I live?
- What evidence supports this option for cats, and what response should prompt a recheck?
- Will the veterinarian reassess the skin, cytology, or both?
Prognosis is generally good when the cause is identified and managed, but recurrence can occur when it persists. The University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine notes that outcome depends on the underlying cause, and the WAVD guideline discusses the role of ongoing predisposing disease.
